BT Song 1626

This song reflects the essence of Viraha Bhakti, where both lovers, fully aware of each other’s playful deceit, continue the pretense as it brings them joy and strengthens their bond. No other human relationship offers such intimacy, creating a unique blend of love and conflict. This dynamic is especially true in bhakti, where both God and the devotee experience estrangement and celebration in their relationship simultaneously.

BT Song 1626 Slip and Evasion

Simple English

What all do you say

To evade me

You tell me

New stories  1

I know

All your evasions

I have collected

All your stories  2

No one

Tells stories like you

No one

Evades like you  3

I have understood

Everything

And you too

Know this  4

Yet, this courage

How does it

Come back

To you again and again  5

A weak one

Will ask

And accept

Whatever you say  6

Is it because

You think

She is a fool

And will believe it?  7

There is

No chance for that

And you

Know that too  8

Do you think

Let it slip

And go on

With it?  9

Seeing your slip

And evasion

I too

Smile and enjoy  10

There is

A kind of thrill in it

That keeps

Coming to me  11

I too

Slipped and evaded

And I know

You enjoyed it too  12

Through this quarrel

And reconciliation

The closeness

Between us  13

Has increased

Even more

We will continue

This even further  14

BT Song 1626 Slipping and Evasion

Classical English

What words thou dost employ

To evade my seeking

New tales thou dost

Narrate unto me  1

Thy evasions

I know them all

And I have gathered

Thy stories as well  2

None other

Tells tales as thou dost

None evades

As thou dost  3

All is known to me

And likewise

Thou knowest this well

In thine own heart  4

Yet still, how comes

This courage to thee

That returneth

Time and again?  5

A feeble one

Would ask

And accept

Whatever thou sayest  6

Is it, perchance, because

Thou deemest her a fool

And thinkest she will

Believe thy words?  7

But no such chance

Is mine to give

And this too

Thou knowest well  8

Dost thou think

Let it slip

And continue on

With this charade?  9

Seeing thy slipping

And evasion

I too

Laugh within and delight  10

For therein lies

A certain rapture

That cometh to me

Unceasingly  11

I too

Have slipped and evaded

And I know

Thou hast delighted in it too  12

Through this discord

And reconciliation

The bond between us

Hath grown stronger still  13

And so we shall continue

This game of ours

Together, evermore

As before  14

BT Song 1627

In bhakti, while the devotee must listen and discern the Lord’s inner voice, the Lord, as the creator, shares the responsibility of nurturing and sustaining this practice. Without divine intervention, the devotee may be overwhelmed by external distractions, turning into a spectacle for the Lord, who is inevitably drawn into it. The bond between the Lord and the devotee is reciprocal, not one-sided.

BT Song 1627 Your Voice

Simple English

Before I speak

Anything aloud

Before the words

Come to my lips  1

Inside, a voice

Speaks with clarity

I realize

That voice is yours  2

Hearing your voice

Is not so easy

When my mind

Is not ready  3

It becomes

A great burden

And I know

You understand this too  4

Yet you

Do nothing

But watch

In amusement  5

After creating me

Responsibility is

Shared by us both

Equally  6

But you leave

All responsibility

On me and watch

Amused  7

Fine, let it be

I understand

That your joy

Matters most  8

So now I’ve come

To join you

In this game

Of watching  9

You make a show

Of me

Even I

Enjoy the show  10

So let us both

Join together

And make a show

And watch it too  11

In the end,

We’ll both

Become the show

You know this well  12

So, to avoid

Becoming a show

For others,

In the end  13

Grant me the grace

To hear your voice

Within

And live accordingly  14

BT Song 1627 Thy Voice

Classical English

Before I utter

Any word aloud

Before words

Form upon my lips  1

Within, a voice

Calls with clarity

And I know

That voice is thine  2

To hear thy voice

Is no simple task

When my mind

Is unprepared  3

It becomes

A great burden

And this too

Thou knowest well  4

Yet thou

Dost nothing

But watch

In amusement  5

After creation,

Responsibility

Is shared

By both of us  6

Yet thou

Leavest all duty

Upon me,

And watchest in mirth  7

Very well, let it be

I understand

That thy joy

Is paramount  8

Thus have I come

To join thee

In this game

Of watching  9

Thou dost

Make a show of me

Even I

Find delight in the show  10

Thus shall we both

Join together

Make a show

And enjoy it too  11

In the end,

We both shall become

The show

Thou knowest this for sure  12

Thus, to avoid

Being a show

For others,

In the end  13

Grant me the grace

To hear thy voice

Within

And live by it  14

BT Song 1628

In bhakti, it’s common to shift responsibility to the Lord. Unlike a doctor who needs the patient’s input to provide treatment, the Lord must anticipate and address the devotee’s needs, much like a mother comforts a child who can’t express its pain. Sometimes, I may not even know my problem, yet I demand a solution from the Lord, expecting Him to respond with a mother’s care rather than questioning me.

BT Song 1628 Do Not Complain

Simple English

Whatever the reason

I do not know

Whom to blame

I do not understand  1

To blame you

I have no way

To blame myself

Has no use  2

You did not create

Me to blame

You did not guide

Me to find faults  3

[I did not live either]

Yet, there seems

To be a fault

What it is

I cannot understand  4

But delaying

Is not right

What should I do

That alone I don’t know  5

What I know

Is only one thing

And that is

To tell you  6

When I come

And tell you

Why should I complain

What reason have I?  7

“First tell

What troubles you

Then the reason

We can seek”  8

Saying this

Is not right

There is a reason

For it too  9

This is the trouble

I have now

If you know that

Why confuse yourself?  10

If a patient

Who doesn’t know the disease

Comes seeking treatment

And stands before you  11

Seeing the pain

The patient suffers

And knowing

The reason for it  12

Giving proper

Treatment after

Is always

Your duty  13

First tell

The cure for this

Then I’ll tell

What troubles me  14

When pain

Becomes unbearable

Giving comfort

Is first your job  15

If you skip that

And make me complain

That itself now

Becomes the trouble  16

First give the solution

For this

Then we can see

My solution  17

BT Song 1628 Complain Not

Classical English

Whatever the cause

I know it not

Whom to blame

I cannot comprehend  1

To blame thee

No way have I

To blame myself

Is of no avail  2

Thou didst not create

Me to blame

Nor didst thou guide

Me to find faults  3

[Neither did I live]

Yet, there is

Some fault it seems

But what it be

I cannot discern  4

Yet delaying

Is not well

What should I do

That alone I know not  5

What I know

Is but one thing

And that is

To tell thee  6

When I come

And tell thee

Why should I complain

What cause have I?  7

“First declare

Thy troubles

Then the reason

We may seek”  8

To say this

Is not quite right

For there is

Reason yet  9

This alone

Is my trouble now

If thou knowest that

Why perplex thyself?  10

If a sufferer

Who knows not the ailment

Seeks a cure

And stands before thee  11

Seeing the pain

The sufferer bears

And discerning

The cause thereof  12

Giving fit

Treatment thereafter

Is ever

Thy duty  13

First give

The remedy for this

Then I’ll tell

What troubles me  14

When pain

Becomes too great

Giving solace

Is first thy task  15

If thou leavest that

And makest me complain

That alone now

Becomes the trouble  16

First give the cure

For this

Then we shall see

To my remedy  17

BT Song 1629

After writing numerous songs of lamentation and complaint, I decided to create this one with a touch of humor. Every form of human expression has its place in bhakti songs, and teasing songs are especially prevalent in Tamil bhakti traditions. Kavi Kalamegam composed such songs, which I’ve enjoyed immensely. I’m unsure if this genre is as common in other cultures as it is in Hinduism.

BT Song 1629 A Single Stream

Simple English Translation:

Without seeking permission

You came to me

Without my  consent

You redeemed me  1

Neither did I know when you came

Nor did I understand when you saved me

Only realizing

That you are the Guru  2

Silently I followed

In your footsteps

You took care

Of everything else  3

First you thought

What a wonderful

Disciple that you

Got in me                           4

After that, one by one

As events unfolded

You lamented

Why did we redeem?  5

Staying with me

But not finding redemption

Now you lament

Every day  6

Seeing your condition

With pity

Even your father

Came to me  7

Though my son

Is indeed God

As a human, he came to you

What can he do

If tortured like this?  8

And he would long

Only to escape

From you

Remember this 9

As long as he escapes

So he said to me

And in reply

I too said to him  10

What can I do?

If this is the state

What else can I do?

At least tell me that  11

Saying this

Both stood puzzled

To guide the way

They called for the Holy Spirit  12

‘Leave me alone’

Saying this

He ran away

They both went after Him 13

There is no way

Anyone can escape

This I understood

Very clearly  14

Wherever they go

They must return

After that

We will see the rest  15

So I laughed

And did my work

After they came

I’ll tell what happened  16

BT Song 1629 One Unending Stream

Classical English

Did thou cam to me

After my getting my permission

When thou soughtest consent

Before Thou didst redeem me  1

Neither did I know when thou camest

Nor did I perceive when thou savedst me

But only discerned

That thou art the Guru  2

Silently I followed

In thy path

All else

Thou didst care for  3

First thou has thought

What a wonderful

Disciple that thou

Got in me                           4

Thereafter, as events

Unfolded one by one

Why did we redeem?

Thou didst lament  5

Remaining with me

But finding no salvation

Now thou lamentest

Day by day  6

Seeing thy state

With pity

Even thy father

Came unto me  7

Though my son

Is indeed divine

As a man, he came unto thee

If treated thus

What can he do?  8

If only he escapes

That is all

He can conceive  9

Thus he spoke to me

And in response

I too said to him  10

What can I do?

If such be the state

What else can I do?

At least tell me that  11

When I said this

Both stood astonished

To guide the way

They called for the Spirit  12

Leaving was enough

He said and fled

Both pursued

Chasing Him further  13

No one can escape

This truth

I understood

Full well  14

Wherever they wander

They must return

After that

We shall see the rest  15

So I laughed

And continued my task

After they returned

I shall tell what transpired  16

BT Song 1630

I previously shared a song {1624} on the Sthala Purana of Vrudhachalam, focusing on environmental themes. After reading the book, the author requested my review, so I wrote both a review and this song for it. In religious poetry, the benefits of visiting a pilgrimage center, temple, or performing a puja are often emphasized. With that tradition in mind, I composed this song.

BT Song 1630 Benefit

The seed of liberation,

O Lord of Mudhukundram,

Let Your grace

Continue to spread everywhere  1

The servants born in this place,

Have compiled

Your glorious history

With Your grace,

To offer it to the world,

May Your true devotees

Who live everywhere  3

Even if they cannot

Visit this place,

By reading this book,

May they surely attain

BT Song 1626
