BT Songs 1631 to 1635

BT Song 1631

All attempts at mediation to bring a truce between Hamas and Israel seem to be failing. It feels as if neither side truly desires peace and both are determined to destroy each other. A similar situation exists between Russia and Ukraine, though in that conflict, America openly uses Ukraine to settle its own scores with Russia. As I listened to the news this evening, I reflected on the situation, and it seemed that, in such scenarios, God might have no other option but to step away to stop the conflict. Or perhaps, He has already distanced Himself, choosing to end His own struggles with humanity?

BT Song 1631 – God Also Ran Away

 Simple English Translation:

Without struggle,

There is no life.

But only struggles

Are not life either.                           1

Still, understanding

This first,

And living accordingly

Became a struggle.                         2

How to fight,

For what to fight,

How far to fight,

And with whom to fight.                              3

Understanding this

Right now, along with it,

Became yet another

Personal struggle.                           4

Finally, understanding

This is the struggle,

Knowing who is the enemy

And who is the ally.                        5

Preparing even for that

Became another

Struggle by itself.                            6

One way, understanding

Our strength and our ally’s,

And realizing the enemy’s

Weaknesses along with it.                           7

Where, when,

And how to attack

Also became

A struggle.                          8

With that, seeing

The visible, hidden,

And those within us

As enemies.                       9

In the end, reconciliation

Is best,

When everyone

Says so.                10

Even how to

Achieve that

Has turned into

A common struggle.                       11

For all this, is the cause

God or man?

When this question

Stands before us.                            12

As God says,

“It’s enough, let go,”

The struggle

Stopped itself.                   13

BT Song 1631 – The Lord Also Fled

 Classical English Translation:

Without battle,

Life doth not exist.

But struggles alone

Art not life either.                            1

Yet, discerning

This at first,

And living thus

Became a battle.                              2

How to strive,

For what to strive,

How far to strive,

And with whom to strive.                            3

Grasping this

Even now, along with it,

Became yet another

Solitary struggle.                             4

In the end, discerning

That this is the battle,

Knowing who is the foe

And who is the friend.                    5

Preparing even for that

Became yet another

Battle of its own.                             6

In some manner,

Perceiving our strength,

And that of our friend,

While understanding the enemy’s

Weakness alongside.                      7

Where, when,

And how to strike

Also hath become

A battle.                              8

Seeing both the visible

And the hidden,

Even those within us

As foes.                9

In the end, reconciliation

Is deemed best,

When all doth proclaim it so.                      10

Even how to

Achieve such reconciliation

Hath become

A common battle.                           11

For all this, is the cause

Divine or mortal?

When this query

Doth stand before us.                    12

As the Lord declares,

“It is sufficient, let go,”

The battle

Ceased of its own accord.                            13

BT Song 1632

While reflecting on my previous song, where God appears to retreat from our conflicts, I found myself questioning why He doesn’t do the same with me. Instead, He continuously engages with me, seeking to mold me in His image, even if it means struggling with me. In other battles, victory goes to one side. But in His struggle, we both win, and He only wins by first losing Himself. So why this unnecessary struggle with me? Now, I wonder if He might try to run away from me, too, after growing weary of my songs.

BT Song 1632 – Mistake

 Simple English Translation:

Thousands of struggles

Exist in life,

Along with them,

Will yours also join?                        1

There is a reason

To fight in life,

But what reason is there

To fight with you?                           2

Many kinds of struggles

Exist in life,

With many people

There are battles too.                    3

Victory and defeat

Both may come,

Victory may turn

Into defeat, and vice versa.                         4

Is the struggle with you

Like this?

Is there space for

Victory or defeat?                           5

If we lose,

Both should lose together,

Or both should

Win as one.                        6

After that,

What is there to talk about?

That’s what

You must say first.                          7

Let this battle

Finish first,

Then if something remains,

We can see about that.                 8

You came

Winning by losing,

And I too

Won by losing.                  9

After that victory

Became yours,

Is there any need

To fight anymore?                           10

The division between

Master and servant

Disappeared,

Then love and affection grew.                     11

The thought

Of being two vanished,

And we blended as

One within one.                12

For this battle,

There is no place,

And no way

To even think of it.                          13

So now,

Look for other work,

Find someone else

To fight with.                     14

If no one

Is found,

Come fight

With me as usual.                           15

There are plenty

Of people for that,

And I have

Need for that too.                           16

But if you abandon that

And stand to fight

With me,

That is the mistake.                        17

BT Song 1632 – The Error

 Classical English Translation:

Thousands of struggles

Do dwell in life,

And amidst them,

Shall thine also join?                       1

In life, there is cause

For striving,

But what cause is there

For striving with thee?                   2

Many forms of struggles

Do dwell in life,

With many souls,

Battles there be as well.                3

Victory and defeat

Both may arise,

And victory

May turn to defeat, and vice versa.                         4

Is the battle with thee

Thus?

Is there room for

Victory or defeat?                           5

If we lose,

Let us both lose together,

Or let us

Both win as one.                             6

Afterward,

What remains to be spoken?

That is what

Must be said first.                           7

Let this battle

Be ended first,

Then if aught remains,

We shall address it later.                              8

Thou camest

Winning by losing,

And I too

Didst win by losing.                         9

Once that victory

Became thine,

What need

For further strife?                           10

The gulf between

Master and servant

Hath disappeared,

And love and affection did flourish.                          11

The thought of two

Hath vanished,

And we merged as

One within one.                12

For this struggle,

There is no place,

Nor any path

To contemplate it.                           13

So now,

Turn to other tasks,

Seek another

For battle.                           14

If none

Can be found,

Then as of old,

Come and contend with me.                       15

There are many

For such strife,

And I too

Have need of it.                16

But if thou forsakest that

And standeth to fight

With me,

That is the error.                              17

BT Song 1633

With severe back pain rendering me unable to get up and forcing me to live a limited life, deprived of my regular activities—especially my evening walk and exercises—I find myself reminding God that while He struggled when He was young, He cannot understand my struggles in old age. Perhaps the only solution for both of us is to bring an end to this life soon.

BT Song 1633 – Lift Me Up

 Simple English Translation:

After stumbling many times

And falling a few times,

When I somehow

Get back on my feet,                      1

Don’t just stand

With folded hands,

Watching and laughing,

Instead, stretch out your hand and lift me up.                     2

No matter how careful

I am,

Life never

Goes without stumbling.                              3

Even if I avoid falling

This time,

There won’t be a chance

To avoid it again.                             4

The path is full of

Hills and valleys,

And the journey

Is difficult.                          5

Even if I try

To go on a smooth path,

Reaching it

Is difficult.                          6

It is visible

At a distance,

The path

You are showing me.                      7

After enduring

So many hardships,

You too

Reached your goal.                         8

If even God

Faces such a plight,

What can be said

About the state of people like us?                            9

Yet,

When you did it,

You had

Youthful strength too.                    10

Therefore, my condition

You may not understand,

Even if I explain,

It won’t make sense to you.                        11

So, once again,

Come back,

Live as an old man,

And show me how.                         12

Afterward, show me

How to live

Without stumbling

And falling.                         13

Or else,

When I stumble now,

Don’t just leave me

And lift me.                        14

Quickly put

An end to this,

Then there won’t be

Any path to stumble on again.                   15

BT Song 1633 – Lift Me Up

 Simple English Translation:

After stumbling oftentimes,

And falling on occasion,

When somehow

I rise again,                        1

Do not stand idly by

With hands folded,

Gazing and jesting,

But rather, stretch forth thy hand and lift me.                      2

No matter how careful

I strive to be,

Life proceeds not

Without its stumbling.                   3

Though I evade falling

This time,

There shall be no chance

To evade it yet again.                     4

The path is rugged

With hills and valleys,

And the journey

Is fraught with difficulty.               5

Even if I attempt

A smoother way,

To reach it

Is no easy task.                 6

It lies

Within sight,

The path

Thou pointest toward.                   7

After enduring

Countless hardships,

Thou too

Didst reach thy goal.                      8

If even God

Faces such a plight,

What then can be said

Of the state of us mortals?                          9

Yet,

When thou didst accomplish it,

Thou hadst

The vigor of youth.                          10

Therefore, my state

Thou mayst not comprehend,

And even if I explain,

It may not make sense to thee.                  11

So once again,

Return,

Live as an elder,

And show me the way.                  12

Then afterward,

Show me how to live,

Without stumbling

And falling.                         13

Or now,

When I stumble,

Lift me up

Not leaving again.                           14

Quickly bring this

To a conclusion,

Then there shall be no path

Left to stumble upon.                     15

BT Song 1634

Another song in Viraha Bhava (the mood of longing). Although a devotee constantly feels the presence of God, there are moments when she feels His absence intensely, leading her to argue with Him for delaying His fellowship. While imagining God as a mother provides comfort, it is in Viraha Bhava that one finds complete freedom to be open with the Lord. I always enjoy writing such poems.

BT Song 1634 – Unnecessary Anger

 Simple English Translation:

Why this anger?

At least tell me that.

What did I say?

You tell me that too.                       1

I asked why

You were late.

What’s wrong with that?

I’m asking without understanding.                            2

Did you not even think

That someone is waiting for you?

Didn’t it cross your mind

Even a little?                      3

Is it right

To say that

You have no time

For the world and its people?                     4

If you say

You have no time

For others,

Then why do you love me?                          5

Then how can you

Deny me

The rights

I have?                 6

You’re acting well,

But do you think

I don’t

Understand?                      7

If I put you

In my place,

You’ll realize

What my mistake was.                  8

You have a thousand

Things to do,

But for me,

There is only one.                           9

I always live

Thinking of you,

Longing for

When you will come.                      10

If you’re late,

I wither away,

So I get angry

With you.                           11

Even knowing this,

If you still argue,

That’s why

I asked.                12

If you argue

Without cooling my anger,

What else

Can I do?                            13

Let bygones be bygones.

Let it not happen again.

Don’t waste time

Unnecessarily.                   14

Let’s talk kindly

And be happy now.

We’ll continue

Our fight another day.                   15

BT Song 1634 – Unnecessary Anger

 Classical English Translation:

Why dost thou harbor this anger?

At least tell me that.

What have I said?

Thou must tell me as well.                           1

I did ask thee

Why thou art delayed.

What fault lies therein?

I inquire without understanding.                               2

Didst thou not think

That someone awaits thee?

Did it not occur to thee,

Even in the slightest?                     3

Is it right

To claim

Thou hast no time

For the world and its people?                     4

If thou sayest

Thou hast no time

For others,

Then wherefore dost thou love me?                        5

Then how canst thou

Deny me

The rights

That are mine?                  6

Thou art skilled in acting,

But dost thou believe

That I fail

To comprehend?                              7

If I placed thee

In my position,

Thou wouldst realize

What my fault was.                        8

Thou hast a thousand

Tasks to attend,

But for me,

There is but one.                             9

I live always

Thinking of thee,

Yearning for the moment

When thou shalt arrive.                10

If thou art delayed,

I wither away,

And thus, I grow angry

With thee.                         11

Yet, knowing this,

If thou persist in argument,

That is why

I did ask thee.                   12

If thou dost argue

Without quelling my wrath,

What else

Can I do?                            13

Let what has passed, pass.

Let it not happen again.

Do not waste

Time in vain.                      14

Let us speak kindly

And rejoice in this moment.

Our quarrel

May resume another day.                            15

BT Song 1635

Yesterday was one of my worst days. I finally had to call a quack doctor as I couldn’t even get to the hospital by auto. I couldn’t get up, so I called Sankar for help. He came, assisted me, and Ratna prepared and fed me before leaving me with what I needed. By evening, I had recovered slightly and could move a little. This morning, as I recalled yesterday’s ordeal, I found myself complaining to the Lord again. Although He never experienced old age, surely He understands what back pain means. He should soon bring an end to my suffering by calling me back, rather than leaving me to struggle alone.

BT Song 1635 – I Asked for an End

 Simple English Translation:

I never said

I couldn’t do it,

But I couldn’t finish it—

That is the truth.                             1

With back pain

And old age,

Daily life

Has become difficult.                     2

Even humans

Understand this well,

But do you,

Who became human, not understand?                   3

You don’t know

About old age,

And do you

Understand back pain?                  4

What became

Of the experience

You gained

After hanging for three hours?                   5

Maybe my sins

Pressed upon you

And made you pain

Worse than that.                             6

Is that why

You forgot

And now

Don’t understand my situation?                 7

Whether big or small,

A burden is still a burden.

For each one’s situation,

It is fitting.                          8

Humans

Understand this,

But they

Cannot help.                      9

Even you, who can,

Show no concern.

So I lament,

For there is no other way.                            10

If I were young,

I could endure it,

But now, in old age,

What can I do?                  11

Leaving the decision

In your hands,

I asked for an end

To my back pain.                             12

BT Song 1635 – I Asked for an End

 Classical English Translation:

I did not claim

I could not do it,

But failing to complete it—

This is the truth.                              1

With a painful back

And old age upon me,

Daily life

Has become a trial.                         2

Even mankind

Understands this well,

But thou,

Who took on human form,

 dost thou not comprehend?                       3

Thou knowest not

Of old age,

And dost thou

Understand the pangs of backache?                        4

What did become

Of the lesson

Thou gained

From hanging three hours?                         5

Perchance my sins

Did weigh you down

And made thou suffering

Greater than mine.                         6

Hast thou, therefore,

Forgotten

And now

Failed to perceive my plight?                       7

Whether small or large,

A burden remains a burden.

According to one’s condition,

It is fitting.                          8

Mankind

Understands this,

Yet they

Are unable to assist.                       9

Even thou,

With the power to aid,

Showest no concern.

Thus I lament, for no path remains.                         10

If I were yet young,

I could bear it,

But in the frailty of age,

What course remains?                   11

Leaving the end

In thy hands,

I sought relief

From this aching back.                   12
