BT Songs 1641 to 1645

BT Song 1641

After reading the following comments and also the song by Rumi, I wrote this song. God provides for our needs, but we often become trapped by our own greed.

Getting to the Treasure Beneath the Foundation

ON THE PICKAXE

…Don’t listen too often, Rumi advises, to the comforting part of the self that gives you what you want. Pray instead for a tough instructor.  Nothing less than the radical disassembling of what we’ve wanted and gotten, and what we still wish for, allows us to discover the value of true being that lies underneath….— The pickaxe, for Rumi, represents whatever does this fierce attention-work: clear discernment, a teacher’s presence, simple strength, and honesty with oneself. The pickaxe dismantles the illusory personality and finds two glints in the dirt. Like eyes they are, but these jewel lights are not personal. Rumi points to a treasure within our lives unconnected to experience. It is intrinsic, beyond calculation, a given, reached after the ego is cleared away and a one-pointedness digs under the premises. the self

WHO MAKES THESE CHANGES?

Who makes these changes?

I shoot an arrow right.

It lands left.

I ride after a deer and find myself

chased by a hog.

I plot to get what I want

and end up in prison. (p.110)

I dig pits to trap others

And fall in.

I should be suspicious

Of what I want.—pp. 110-111

BT Song 1641: He Measures Rightly

 Simple English Translation:

1.

Don’t say anything against Him,

He measures daily, don’t forget.

Even if you ask for more,

He’ll give that too, don’t forget.

2.

Without any lack,

He gives exactly what He measures.

If you think it’s not enough,

He won’t hesitate to give even a bit more.

3.

Try giving back what He gave,

He’ll show that He measured it rightly.

He won’t stand for any argument,

He won’t make any objections.

4.

There’s no change in His measurement,

There’s no fault in it.

We are the ones who aren’t right,

No matter how much He gives, it’s never enough.

5.

What more will He do than this?

How long will He wait with patience?

When the servant doesn’t obey,

He’ll pick up the rod afterward.

6.

Even if we fear the rod and suppress,

Inside, rebellion still stands.

He knows that too,

And He’ll give a remedy for that as well.

7.

If we don’t want the rod or remedy,

We must change ourselves.

Decide daily to live depending on His grace,

And make that resolution every day.

BT Song 1641: He Measures with Precision

 Classical English Translation:

1.

Speak not ill of Him,

For He measures daily, forget not.

Even if thou asketh for more,

That too shall He give, forget not.

2.

Without any flaw,

He giveth precisely what He measures.

Shouldst thou deem it insufficient,

He will not refuse to add a little more.

3.

Try returning what He hath given,

He shall prove that He hath measured rightly.

He will not stand for quarrels,

Nor shall He entertain objections.

4.

In His measure, there is no variance,

Nor any fault therein.

We are the ones who err,

For no matter how much He giveth, it sufficeth not.

5.

What more can He do than this?

How long shall His patience endure?

When the servant obeyeth not,

Then shall He wield the rod.

6.

Though we suppress in fear of the rod,

Within, rebellion doth persist.

This too He knoweth,

And He shall provide a cure for it as well.

7.

If we desire neither rod nor remedy,

Then we must ourselves be changed.

Daily resolve to live in His grace,

And thus make thy decision each day.

BT Song 1642

When God desires to fulfill His will in our lives, He is more concerned with shaping us in His image than the outcome of our tasks. If we cooperate, the process will be smooth. If we remain rebellious, He will still accomplish His purpose by any means necessary. But in my case, there is always a competition between us—who will bend more to fulfill His will in my life.

BT Song 1642: A Competitive Struggle

 Simple English Translation:

1.

Though you’ve given me

A thousand duties,

You also give the strength

To carry them out.

2.

You send help

That matches the need,

Ensuring everything

Is done rightly by me.

3.

Then you ask for an account,

Leaving no room

For excuses

From me.

4.

If I say “No,”

You do not ask,

And there’s no escape

For me either.

5.

Do I have the desire?

Can I manage it?

You don’t even ask

Such questions.

6.

You hand a paintbrush

To the blind,

And tell them

To create art.

7.

No matter what is drawn,

You call it a wonder.

Yet your goal

Is not the painting.

8.

Your concern

Is for both the blind and the sighted,

Only after the painting is done

Will you tell of it.

9.

Before that,

You say nothing.

This is how

Things stand now for me.

10.

Somehow,

Your work must get done,

And for that,

You need a servant.

11.

I don’t know

Whether to laugh or cry,

But it seems

You’re not worried.

12.

If I speak,

You get angry,

So what more

Should I say?

13.

If you know

How to wield the whip,

I know

How to sing a song.

14.

Which will win,

The whip or the song?

Even that

Will be known in the end.

15.

This contest

Will always go on,

Until you

Call me to stop.

BT Song 1642: A Struggle of Wills

 Classical English Translation:

1.

Though thou hast given me

A thousand duties,

Thou also bestowest the strength

To fulfill them.

2.

Thou sendest aid

According to the need,

That all may be done

Rightly by me.

3.

Then dost thou ask for a reckoning,

Allowing no room

For excuses

From me.

4.

If I refuse,

Thou askest not,

And for me,

There is no escape either.

5.

Hast thou concern?

Can I accomplish it?

Such questions

Thou askest not.

6.

Thou givest a brush

To the blind,

And commandest them

To paint a picture.

7.

Whatever be the creation,

Thou callest it a marvel.

Yet thy aim

Is not the painting.

8.

Thy concern

Is with both blind and sighted,

Only after the work is done

Dost thou speak of it.

9.

Before then,

Thou speakest naught.

This is now

My condition.

10.

In any way,

Thy will must be fulfilled,

And for that,

Thou needest a servant.

11.

Whether I weep or laugh,

I know not,

Yet concerning this,

Thou art unconcerned.

12.

If I speak,

Thou dost grow angry,

So why

Should I say more?

13.

If thou knowest

How to wield the rod,

Then I know

How to raise a song.

14.

Which shall prevail,

The rod or the song?

Even that

Shall be known in the end.

15.

This contest

Shall forever endure,

Until thou

Callest me to cease.

BT Song 1643

This song plays with the word ‘Thelivu’ (clarity). However, the way I’ve used it here might confuse those who cannot understand the twist in its meaning. I’m teasing God, questioning whether He can understand me clearly or if He will get confused.

BT Song 1643 Clarity is Needed

 Simple English Translation

1.

Even if explained clearly,

When not understood,

If I say it this way,

What can I do?

2.

Twists and turns,

I don’t need them,

Clearly, everything

Must be said.

3.

Lack of clarity,

Is understood clearly,

So who

Gives clarity?

4.

Even after explaining

So clearly,

How to explain

To someone like you who knows?

5.

If this itself

Causes confusion,

If you get confused,

What will happen, tell me?

6.

You too

Understand it clearly,

Then,

Tell me clearly.

7.

When I lived

Without clarity,

You made it clear

And gave me clarity.

8.

Even when that clarity

Arrived,

More of it

Is still needed.

9.

If there is

No confusion,

Clarity will

Be clearer.

10.

So, what

I need,

I’ve clearly told

You clearly.

11.

If what I said

Is understood clearly,

Give me

The clarity I seek.

12.

If this itself

Seems confusing to you,

Search for

The clarity that clears.

13.

Until then, I too

Will search clearly

For the clarity

That explains clearly.

BT Song 1643 Clarity Desired

 Classical English Translation

1.

Though I speak with clarity,

When not comprehended,

If explained in this manner,

What can I but do?

2.

Complexities and twists,

I seek them not,

Clearly must all things

Be expressed.

3.

The absence of clarity

Is understood with clarity,

Who then

Shall grant this clarity?

4.

Even after so much

Has been explained clearly,

How dost thou clarify

To one as knowing as thee?

5.

If this itself

Begets confusion,

If thou art perplexed,

What then shall come to pass?

6.

Thou too

Must grasp it clearly,

Then to me

Clearly must thou speak.

7.

When I did live

In obscurity,

Thou didst make clear

And bestowed clarity.

8.

Though that clarity

Hath arrived,

Yet more of it

Is required still.

9.

If no trace

Of confusion remains,

Clarity shall

Shine forth more brightly.

10.

Thus have I

In plain words told,

What I seek

Clearly, unto thee.

11.

If my words

Hast been understood clearly,

Bestow upon me

The clarity I desire.

12.

If this itself

Confounds thee,

Seek thou the clarity

That doth enlighten.

13.

Till then, I too

Shall seek more clearly

For the clarity

That illuminates with light.

BT Song 1644

Sometimes, I feel that God assigns me too many tasks, especially the responsibility of maintaining such a large property without anyone to help. The ashram helpers are here only to do what they are paid for, but there are many other issues involved in maintaining the building and property. Frankly, I am not interested in such tasks, but God has thrust them upon me, and since He arranged all kinds of help, I cooperated with Him. However, considering my age and back pain, what He demands and expects from me feels excessive. He must remember that He also shares an equal stake in this and cannot remain just a Taskmaster. My ideal scenario is that a young couple should stay to take care of the property and me. I know this is unlikely, but it is up to Him to find and arrange an alternative.

BT Song 1644 Duty and Rights

 Simple English Translation

1.

If it’s not possible,

You threaten me,

If I accomplish it,

You crush me underfoot.

2.

If I ask why,

You claim, “It’s mine, it’s ours,”

And use that

To achieve your goal.

3.

If this is all

That can be done,

What can anyone do

Beyond this?

4.

But even that

Is not in my hands,

Without your grace,

There’s no one else.

5.

You’ve protected me so far,

You’ll continue to protect,

This hope

Is all I have.

6.

No matter how much advice

Anyone gives,

Even if they say,

“Do what you can,”

7.

If it’s not enough,

And more must be done,

Even if encouragement

Is given by anyone,

8.

Even if my mind

Desires to do it,

My body

Cannot accept it.

9.

Why did you set

This rule?

You refused

To give the reason.

10.

Refusing to give

Is your duty,

But asking

Is my right.

11.

Your right,

My duty,

Don’t think

Only in those terms.

12.

Both together

Make life,

Never forget

That truth.

13.

Together we’ll do it,

Living in this world,

We’ll unite

As one.

14.

After that,

No work remains,

There, between us,

No difference exists.

BT Song 1644 Duty and Rights

 Classical English Translation

1.

If it be impossible,

Thou dost threaten me,

If I succeed,

Thou dost crush me underfoot.

2.

If I question why,

Thou dost claim, “It is mine, it is ours,”

And with that,

Thou dost accomplish thy task.

3.

If this is all

That can be achieved,

What more

Can anyone do?

4.

Yet even that

Is beyond my grasp,

Without thy grace,

No other remains.

5.

Thou hast protected me thus far,

Thou wilt protect still,

This hope

Is all I hold.

6.

No matter the counsel

That others give,

Even if they say,

“Do what thou canst,”

7.

If it be insufficient,

And more must be done,

Even if encouragement

Be offered by anyone,

8.

Though my heart

Desires to act,

My body

Fails to comply.

9.

Why didst thou set

This rule?

Thou refuseth

To reveal the reason.

10.

Refusing to reveal

Is thy duty,

Yet asking

Is my right.

11.

Thy right,

My duty,

Think not

In such limited terms.

12.

Both together

Are life’s essence,

Forget not

This eternal truth.

13.

Together shall we act,

Living in this world,

We shall unite

As one.

14.

Afterward,

No task remains,

There, between us,

No difference shall abide.

BT Song 1645

Perhaps because the Lord died young, though He came as a human, He might not fully understand the challenges of old age. He established the law of nature, where a ripe fruit detaches and falls from the tree on its own. Similarly, when crops are ripe, the farmer harvests them in time and does not leave them to drop on the field. Given my ailments, I need to remind the Lord of this principle.

BT Song 1645 Harvest season

 Simple English Translation

1.

You will do something,

I can see that,

Something must be done,

You understand that.

2.

When will you do it?

That alone

Is not clear

To me right now.

3.

If the seed is sown

In the right season,

At the proper time,

It can be harvested.

4.

This too

You know well,

Then why

The delay?

5.

Life is not like

A crop harvested yearly,

Do you not realize

This truth?

6.

The differences between

Childhood, youth, and old age—

Do you not understand

These distinctions too?

7.

With both stages

Of your life over here,

Have you forgotten

Your old age?

8.

Both plowing and sowing

Have ended,

The harvest time

Has come—don’t you see?

9.

If you delay

Further,

The grain will fall

To the ground and scatter.

10.

After that, gathering it

Becomes impossible,

For anyone

To achieve.

11.

Left in the field,

It turns to fertilizer,

Benefiting the next

Crop.

12.

But human life

Is not the same,

Though you know

This well.

13.

At the right time,

Reap the harvest,

And prepare to set

Sail—see the way.

14.

If you leave it

Any longer,

It will be of no use,

Understand this truth.

BT Song 1641: சரியாய் அளக்கிறான்

1.

8.

உழவு விதைப்பு

இரண்டும் முடிந்து

அறுவடை காலம்

வந்தது தெரியாதா

9.

இன்னும் முதிரட்டும்

என்று விட்டால்

நிலத்தில் விழுந்து

தானியம் சிந்திடும்

10.

அதன்பின் திரட்டி

எடுப்பது என்பது

நிச்சயம் எவருக்கும்

இயலாத காரியம்

11.

நிலத்திலே விட்டு

எருவாக மாற

அடுத்த பயிருக்கு

அதனால் லாபம்

12.

ஆனால் மனித

வாழ்வு என்பது

அதுபோல் இல்லை

என்பது தெரிந்தும்

13.

ஏற்ற நேரத்தில்

அறுவடை செய்து

கலம் செல்லவும்

வழியினைப் பாரு

14.

அதைவிட்டு இன்னும்

விட்டு வைத்தால்

ஒன்றுக்கும் உதவாது

என்பதை புரிந்திடு
