BT Songs 1651 to 1655

BT Song 1651

The feeling of Viraha Bhava (love in separation) encompasses all nine emotions described in classical art forms as the Nava Rasas: love, humor, compassion, anger, courage, fear, disgust, wonder, and peace. This emotional state is often used to deeply express devotion. I’ve written many songs inspired by this sentiment, and I recently shared one. For those interested, I’ve also posted a detailed article about Viraha Bhava on my Facebook page with additional insights—feel free to read it there.

BT Song 1651 – Overwhelmed, I Fell

 Simple English

I waited and watched the way,

For the sound of your footsteps near,

In a rush, I rose and ran,

With tearful eyes, I bowed low.

Yet my legs get twisted and froze,

And with it, my walk halted too,

My body shook, shivering all over,

After that, I don’t remember what happened.

When I opened my eyes again,

I realized I was on your shoulder,

Love nudged me from one side,

While shyness held me back from the other.

Like a dazed woman still in a dream,

I continued acting the same way,

Knowing it was all just an act,

Yet you accepted it with desire.

Not letting the chance slip away,

I leaned on your shoulder again,

Understanding my need completely,

You tightly embraced me too.

In that embrace, I lost myself,

Overwhelmed, I fell again,

The daze hasn’t cleared yet,

Nor do I wish for clarity.

If I were to pass away in this state,

There could be no other liberation like it,

Devotion longs for this end alone,

But your will doesn’t seem to agree.

Practicing devotion, singing hymns,

Bowing at your feet with reverence,

To pass away in your embrace,

Is there any greater goal than that?

 BT Song 1651 – Overwhelmed, I Fell

Classical English

I did await and watch the path,

Listening for thy footfall near,

With haste I rose, and ran apace,

My tearful eyes bowed low in awe.

Yet my legs grew frail and locked,

My gait did halt, ceased at once,

My form did tremble, all astir,

Thereafter, memory held no more.

When next I opened mine eyes,

Lo, upon thy shoulder I lay,

Love did press me on one side,

Whilst shyness held me back anon.

As one entranced, lost in dream,

Did I persist, feigning still,

Though fully conscious ’twas pretense,

Thou didst receive it, desirous still.

Not losing that precious chance,

On thy shoulder I leaned again,

Perceiving my need entire,

Thou didst embrace me close and true.

In thy hold, myself was lost,

Overcome, I fell anew,

This trance persists, unbroken yet,

Nor would I seek release thereof.

Should I perish in this state,

No greater liberation could I attain,

For devotion desires naught but this,

Yet thy will seemeth otherwise.

With songs and hymns I practice faith,

Bowing at thy feet in reverence true,

To pass away embraced by thee—

What higher goal could one pursue?

BT Song 1652

Again no proper sleep—both day and night.  I don’t have much worries now.  Health is relatively good considering my age.  My routine life goes as usual without much ups and downs.  Relatively I live in a best place with best climate with a best life as a Recluse.  I also reduced my reading and writing.  I have decided not to write many more poems.  Of course now I write few secular songs but not regularly.  I prefer to remain quiet and calm.  But still sleep is evading.  I don’t know whether is this again a mental problem or health issue.  When nights I cannot sleep then I began to talk to the Lord sometimes audibly, as no one lives around me to be disturbed or several times silently.  But this struggle never goes.  This evening when I was thinking about it, again I wrote this song.

BT Song 1652 My Struggle

Simple English

1.

Fighting with you, nothing will work,

Fighting with the world, won’t help either.

2.

So, I tried to fight with myself,

But I failed again and came to you.

3.

What are you asking me to do?

Why do you make me watch this spectacle?

4.

The finger can swell according to its size,

Only then will you fully understand it.

5.

If the master places a useless stone on the head,

And tells it to fly, what can it do?

6.

This is what you ask me to do,

You tell me to carry this burden.

7.

The weight of the body pulls one side,

The weight of the world weighs on the other.

8.

If, above all this, the weight of the mind is added,

What can I possibly do?

9.

My struggle now is only this,

The answer to this, forever, is you.

10.

Change yourself in place of the answer,

Or help me carry the burden.

11.

If I keep fighting like this,

It cannot succeed; you must understand this.

Gurukulam, 6-9-2024, 5.00 pm

BT Song 1652 My Struggle

Classical English:

1.

To battle with thee, naught will avail,

To contend with the world, nothing shall aid.

2.

Thus, I turned to struggle with mine own soul,

Yet in that too I failed and to thee I returned.

3.

What dost thou bid me to perform?

Why dost thou make me witness such folly?

4.

The finger may swell in proportion to its size,

Only then shall thou comprehend it fully.

5.

If the master places a useless stone upon the head,

And bids it fly, what shall it achieve?

6.

This, thou askest me to perform,

And thou bidst me carry this burden.

7.

The weight of the body presses on one side,

The weight of the world doth weigh the other.

8.

Should the weight of the mind be added to these,

What then shall I do?

9.

My struggle, at present, is this alone,

The answer thereto, forever, is thee.

10.

Change thyself to answer, or assist me to bear this load.

11.

If I continue this struggle thus,

It shall not succeed; thou must perceive this.

BT Song 1653

This morning was very beautiful here in the ashram. Restarting a life of solitude, I sat calmly near the bay window, immersing myself in the surrounding silence. I reflected on how the Lord fulfills every part of our lives—theology, philosophy, sociology, ideology, and more. Celebrating Diwali peacefully (savoring Ubbattu [puran poli] and Vada, with podina and dhaniya chutney that I made after everyone left, along with a cup of filter coffee I prepared for Chakaravarthy), I meditated on the holistic nature of bhakti and mukti in the Lord and composed this song.

Although family life is called Illaram—the dharma of a household—interestingly, the word aram (meaning “dharma”) is often missing when we speak of renunciation in Tamil, particularly in the Tirukkural. While we discuss the “dharma” of a sannyasi, renunciation remains beyond the original Threevarga: dharma, artha, and kama, to which the fourth category, moksha, was later added emphasing Sannyasa.  But in the Lord it is open to all.

BT Song 1653 Festival of Light

Simple English

You came as light

To reveal truth,

You stood as a feeling

To show us what RELATIONSHIP means.

For this life and the next,

You placed joy in our hearts,

For this world and beyond,

You gave us Your grace.

For people to live together

In unity and love,

You gave family life

As a way of goodness.

To those few called to a different path,

You offered the way of renunciation,

To live in solitude

As sannyasis

As the seed of liberation

And the essence of devotion,

You made me to sing

Through sweet Tamil

Even after giving so much,

It was not enough for You,

So You live with us

At all times.

To let the world see

This great joy,

You placed devotees

As parts of Your own body.

Even with all our differences,

You showed us that

We all are part

Of You.

No matter how weak

We may be,

You act

Only through us.

Without explaining philosophy,

Or delving into doctrines,

You made Yourself

The essence of truth.

To celebrate this,

On this Festival of Light,

Let us live in this world

Showing Your love.

Gurukulam, 31-10-2024, Morning 8:45

BT Song 1653 – Festival of Light

Classic English

1.

Thou camest as light,

To reveal truth’s embrace,

Thou stoodst as a feeling,

To show us the meaning of RELATIONSHIP.

2.

For this life and the next,

Thou placed joy within our hearts,

For this world and beyond,

Thou bestowed grace upon us.

3.

To live in unity and love,

Thou gavest family life,

As a path of goodness,

For mankind to walk.

4.

To the few who tread a different path,

Thou offeredst renunciation’s way,

To live in solitude,

As sannyasis, in devotion’s sway.

5.

As the seed of liberation,

And the essence of devotion,

Thou made me to sing

In sweet Tamil’s devotion.

6.

Even after giving so much,

It was still not enough for Thee,

Thus Thou livest with us

At all times, in all ways.

7.

To let the world behold

This great joy that is ours,

Thou placedst devotees

As parts of Thy own body.

8.

Though divided in differences,

Thou showedst us the truth,

That we are all part

Of Thee, the One.

9.

No matter how frail

We may be in our ways,

Thou workest

Only through us.

10.

Without expounding philosophy,

Nor delving into doctrines deep,

Thou made Thyself

The essence of truth to keep.

11.

To celebrate this truth,

On this Festival of Light,

Let us walk in this world

And show forth Thy love so bright.

Gurukulam, 31-10-2024, Morning 8:45

BT Song 1654

After nearly missing my glimpse of paradise, I went for my evening walk alone in the ashram. A light drizzle interrupted now and then, but it only enhanced my joy, as I love such beautiful weather—surrounded by nature, walking in solitude with the Lord. Reflecting on this bliss, inspiration came, and I recorded it in my mind. After my walk and my regular, though limited, exercise, I typed it up, the blessing still filling my soul.

BT Song 1654 Heavenly Earth

 Simple English Translation

When you, yourself,

choose to give,

why would I even

refuse to receive?

Receiving what is given,

nurturing and growing it,

protecting and living –

this is my duty.

For both this life and beyond,

who truly knows

what is needed?

Show me someone.

Can anyone deny both,

calling them illusions?

Tell me if that’s possible.

When you, who understand

the need for both,

give them both

with your own hand,

Knowing that living in this world

with an eye on the eternal

is surely the way to live,

When you give the opportunity

to live in both realms each day,

In that joy, even the bonds

of servitude delight,

as both worlds merge in life.

In such a state,

what is worldly or divine?

When both are united,

there is no distinction.

Saying, “This is enough, this is enough,”

celebrating,

living this life alone

is sufficient.

Gurukulam, 31-10-2024, 5.00 p.m.

BT Song 1654 Heavenly Earth

 Classic English Translation

When you choose

to bestow upon me,

how could I ever

refuse to accept?

Receiving your gifts,

nurturing them with care,

preserving and living –

this is my charge.

For both the worldly and the divine,

who comprehends

what is required?

Tell me if there is such a one.

Can one dismiss both,

as mere illusions?

Speak, if such is possible.

You, who know the need

for both,

give them both,

in your wisdom.

Understanding that to dwell

in this world and beyond

is surely the path,

When you grant the chance

to live in both realms each day,

In that bliss, even servitude

finds pleasure,

as both realms unite in life.

In such unity,

what is worldly or divine fades away.

As both join,

distinctions cease to exist.

Saying, “This suffices, this suffices,”

rejoicing,

to live this life alone

is enough.

BT Song 1655 Don’t Irritate

When I was having my dinner suddenly I thought that I haven’t written a song on Viraha-bhava for long time.  Then which topic I can choose for it a guest came and keeping it as the theme I wrote this song after dinner.

 Simple English Translation:

1.

If you visit

as a guest

See someone else

 for that

2.

If you say you will stay forever,

Tell me, I will agree,

If it is not possible, tell,

So I can understand.

3.

When you invited me first,

You spoke of closeness,

We stayed together

Without separation.

4.

What happened between us?

Why did your heart change,

From how it was before,

To what it is now?

5.

When I think of what happened,

I wonder why you now treat me

In this way,

Without reason.

6.

Why do you treat me like this?

As if it is a game,

Why do you bring me pain,

Through such actions?

7.

When my mind often forgets you,

Tell me why it happens,

Is the reason

Something I must find out?

8.

If you say I must always remember you,

Then you must show me a life

That reflects this,

And gives me peace.

9.

As long as I live in this world,

It won’t be possible,

This will never happen,

You know what must be done.

10.

As you know this well,

Shall I remind this

Again and again,

Every time to you?

11.

If you call me soon,

I will come to you,

I will always be by your side,

Wherever you go.

12.

But if you go away like this,

And separate from me,

Then I will become angry,

And full of sorrow.

Gurukulam, 8-11-2024, இரவு, 7.50

BT Song 1655 Don’t Irritate me

 Classical English Translation:

1.

If you visit

as a guest

See someone else

 for that

2.

If you declare you shall stay forever,

Tell me, and I shall consent,

But if it is not to be, speak frankly,

That I may comprehend.

3.

When first you invited me,

You spoke of closeness and bond,

We lived in harmony,

Unbroken, unsevered.

4.

What transpired between us?

Why has your heart altered,

From its former state,

To the coldness it now bears?

5.

When I reflect upon the past,

I am puzzled why you now treat me

In such a manner,

Without cause or reason.

6.

Why do you treat me so?

As though it were but a game,

Why cause me sorrow,

With such hurtful acts?

7.

When my mind oft forgets you,

Tell me, what causes this,

Is the reason,

A mystery I must solve?

8.

If you bid me to remember you always,

Then show me a life

That mirrors this demand,

And grants me peace.

9.

As long as I exist in this world,

This shall not be,

It shall never be,

You know what must be done.

10.

Since you know this well,

Shall I repeat it,

Again and again,

To remind you, each time?

11.

If you summon me,

I shall come to you,

I will stand by your side,

Wherever you may go.

12.

But if you depart thus,

And sever your ties with me,

Then I shall be filled with anger,

And grief shall consume me.

BT Song 1651
