BT Song 1681
Taking care of a large property at the age of 73—especially with a pacemaker and persistent back pain—is an immense challenge. The situation is further complicated by uncooperative helpers who care only for their wages, not for fulfilling their responsibilities. Yet relocating elsewhere is unlikely to improve things, for life brings its share of difficulties wherever one goes. It’s often wiser to endure a familiar struggle than to risk an unknown one.
Reflecting on this, I once again poured out my frustration to the Lord. Much like the ashram helpers, He too seems to desire only our love and worship, without stepping in to help us overcome our hardships. I pleaded with Him: either grant me good health and strength, or provide dependable helpers—if not out of devotion, then at least out of diligence and integrity. Alternatively, let some volunteers among His devotees come forward to help manage the ashram. Yet none of these seem likely to happen, leaving me with no option but to blame Him, for He alone has allowed these circumstances to unfold.
With no reliable alternative helpers available, living in a rural area at this stage of life comes with its fair share of burdens. Still, there is no choice but to endure and adapt to the situation, however difficult it may be.
BT Song 1681 Do Not Wrestle Again
Do whatever You want,
Or let me retreat,
Or else once again,
Should I stand for the struggle? 1
Neither can I retreat,
Nor can I fight,
Please let me know,
The state You want me to be in. 2
If done unknowingly,
I can accept it.
But if done knowingly,
What can I do? 3
On one side, I wrestle
Against the world,
On the other side, You too,
Seem to stand in the struggle. 4
No reasons are needed,
If You understand my state,
That alone is enough,
For me to continue. 5
Seventy years
Have passed by,
The time for rest
Has already come. 6
Can I still bear
This heavy burden?
Will I regain
The strength to do so? 7
One must live a life
That suits their age,
And old age
Demands its rest. 8
If You forsake that
And continue to torment me,
I must retreat
And hide to escape. 9
If even that escape
Is denied,
Then again with You,
I must wrestle on. 10
For that, first,
Grant me strength,
Or else silently
Set me aside. 11

BT Song 1682
Despite the routine of daily life, the grace of God remains ever new. Even this statement—and the life lived in that grace—remains unchanged. Yet, because the future is unknown and all our predictions and plans often fail, the way He leads us through His will and grace allows us to experience that grace afresh each day.
1682 – It’s New
When the question,
“What should I do now?”
Stands before me,
Face to face,
The thought comes too:
“You’ll only do
What you’ve always
Done before.”
Everyday life
Seems to come anew,
Yet nothing really
Feels new in it.
Still, grace
Feels fresh each time —
There’s no change
In that at all.
If to be born, grow,
Live, and die —
Is what human
Life is all about,
Then what’s new
In any of this?
Where is the place
For anything new?
Even so, that same life
Goes on every day —
And just that
Feels a little new.
When the only change
Is that nothing changes,
Even that alone
Somehow feels new.
Even this thought
Is not at all new —
And there’s no new
Explanation for it either.
Yet to think
Of this again and again —
That thinking itself
Feels new today.
So, whatever you
May do from now on —
Even if there’s
Nothing new in it,
Let me too
Try writing it down —
In that, some newness
Is found each day.

BT Song 1683
We often use reason to seek answers to subtle questions—questions to which no one has ever provided a truly convincing answer. One such question is: Did God reveal Himself, or did we discover Him? My counter-question would be: What if we simply found Him—or Her—who is always available to anyone who genuinely seeks?
When it comes to the question of creation, two fundamental theories emerge: one posits that creation is eternal, authorless, and cyclical; the other sees it as having a definite origin—created, and linear. If we consider the irrationality of the former and the rational appeal of the latter, then many related questions arise—especially concerning justice and theodicy. For instance: How could a just God allow sin to enter His good creation? Why do the righteous suffer while the wicked prosper?
In this regard, religions like Hinduism—with their doctrine of karma—may offer a more rational explanation than some others. For me personally, the deeper questions surrounding God, the soul (Atman), and the world—three foundational elements in Indian philosophy—remain shrouded in mystery. Each individual must seek the answers for themselves, with or without the help of religion or scripture. In stanza 6, I used the word Turiya, which refers to one of the advanced states of the mind and the Atman. (See the notes below for more on this.) One Siddha poet even describes an experience beyond Turiya, saying: ‘துரியமும் கடந்து நின்ற தூர தூர தூரமே‘ — ‘The One who stands even beyond Turiya, far, far, far away.’ See notes below more on this.
While meditating on these thoughts after completing the scholarly book Rodney Stark, Discovering God: The Origins of the Great Religions and the Evolution of Belief (New York: HarperOne, 2007), I wrote the following song.
Notably, in this song, I avoided using gendered pronouns like He or She, or even the term God. Instead, I used the Tamil word porul, which, in the context of the song, refers more to a “concept” or “essence” than to a personal deity—something closer in spirit to Nirguna Brahman.
Notes
@…The mind in its various modes was only the upakarana or means for the knowledge on the part of the jiva. In the Upanishads the knowledge obtained by the self is distinguished to fall under four states—the jagrat or waking, the svapna or dream, the suspta or dreamless sleep and the turiya or transcendental. Manas, it should be noted, plays a part only in the first two states of waking and dream, the other two being supra-mental. In the waking state, manas functions with the aid of sensory organs while in dream-state it functions by itself without any such aid of the senses. But the states themselves are of Atman or purusa and not manas.— Sanksrit Psychological Terminology. K. Krishnamoorthy. Pp. 225-232, in, Dr. H. L. Hariyappa and Dr. M. M. Patkar, eds. Professor P. K. BT Song 1683 – Become One
1
Something not written
In books or scrolls,
Something never thought
In heart or mind—
2
I sensed it within,
But how can I say?
What is it really?
How do I explain?
3
They gave it a name—
Called it ‘God’,
Then built a religion
Around that word.
4
Added scriptures,
Added rituals too—
But can such things
Contain the Truth?
5
Beyond male or female,
Beyond all forms,
Beyond even formless—
It crosses all norms.
6
Beyond even turiya@,
From far away,
It drew close gently
And sat in my heart.
7
It rules me daily
In quiet ways—
What name can fit
Such a bond as this?
8
Yet whenever I
Called to know,
In whatever way,
It came as that.
9
It came to me,
Changed its form,
Stopped me gently,
Then claimed my life.
10
It became my mother,
Father, teacher, friend—
It filled my thoughts
With tender love.
11
Once we united,
Became as one—
What more remains
To divide us now?
12
So I closed the book,
Set aside the words,
Let all teachings
Fall into silence.
13
Blended completely,
No two remained—
Joined in One,
I became One.

BT Song 1684
During a Tamil satsang, while explaining the difference between grace and mercy, I said that grace, being God’s undeserved kindness, is extended to all without discrimination—like rain or sunshine. However, His saving grace is received only by those willing to accept it, as God never forces His grace upon anyone.
We, as human beings, cannot show that kind of unconditional grace to others, because we are not in any way superior to them to assume they are undeserving of our kindness. Mercy, on the other hand, is God’s compassion that may vary from person to person. He may extend His mercy specifically to someone in desperate need—someone who might collapse without it. It is like a mother giving extra care to her weaker child so that the child may become strong like the others.
In that sense, we can imitate God by showing mercy to others—responding as fellow human beings who understand the situation.
So, as a single man at this age, living with a pacemaker and chronic back pain, and managing a large property while facing many challenges—though it could be depressing—I still see it as an opportunity. It allows me not only to demonstrate resilience but also to witness how God extends His special kindness. As we often say, God doesn’t just provide our daily bread—He sometimes adds a piece of cake too.
BT Song 1684 – All for You
Keeping you alone
Always in my thoughts,
I continue to act
Only for your sake. 1
With the time I have left,
I want to live this way—
Firm is my hope
That I truly can. 2
Grant me the grace
I need each day,
And with it, the strength
To steady my mind. 3
As I grow older
And my body weakens,
Let my heart absorb
What my body can’t. 4
Let me adapt
My work accordingly,
And learn to live
In quiet peace. 5
Grant me the patience
That I need for this,
And also grant
Enduring courage. 6
Even when my body
Loses its strength,
Let not my heart
Grow faint or dim. 7
Whatever fails me,
Let me still endure;
Hold me close
And give me comfort. 8
This special life
That many don’t receive—
Since you have
Blessed me with it— 9
Let me live in a way
That honours it well,
And serve your feet
Each and every day. 10
These few moments
Of sitting with you—
May this divine bond
Never end. 11

BT Song 1685
As I have almost stopped watching all social media, I now spend my time reading books or sitting quietly, enjoying the silence around me. I am privileged to live in solitude. I value human relationships and even celebrate them. At the same time, I deeply enjoy a life of solitude, where I can devote myself to my favourite sadhana—the practice of silence.
Occasionally, I scroll through YouTube to see if there are any worthwhile programs to watch or listen to on topics like theology, philosophy, or nature. I came across a video on the importance of practicing “Conscious Solitude” and avoiding the need for emotional validation, and I watched it in full. Though I couldn’t grasp some of the technical terms used in the talk, the overall theme—practicing conscious solitude for at least 15 minutes a day—resonated with me.
But someone like me, who lives more than 22 hours a day in solitude with very limited interaction—rare phone calls, minimal messages—might relate to this differently. After watching the video, I spent time, as usual, doing my regular reading and then sat for meditation.
During that time, I told the Lord that forgetting myself and thinking only of Him—trying to live in His presence—brings a certain bliss and fullness to my spirit. Living in solitude does not mean living alone or feeling lonely. In fact, I often feel the conscious company of the Lord as I go about my daily tasks. I never feel loneliness, as I’m always engaged—either with some scholar through the books I read, or with the Lord in a constant inward communion.
As inspiration came to me, I wrote this poem reflecting on that theme.
BT Song 1685: Attained you
1
Forgetting myself,
Thinking only of You,
Letting every thought
Revolve around You.
2
Losing myself
Within myself,
I found myself
Fully in You.
3
Asking the question,
“Who am I?”
While many
Search for the answer—
4
When the ‘I–You’
Separation disappears,
What use remains
For even that question?
5
To know and realize
Myself truly,
This simple path
Is already here.
6
No other path
Do I need.
No more wandering,
No more searching.
7
In this path
Of losing to gain,
I lost myself—
And found myself.
8
Then, losing myself
In You completely,
I gained You—
And truly knew myself.
9
Receiving the gift
Called devotion,
I gained the bond
Of being Your devotee.
10
Attaining the state
Called liberation,
I will live
In it forever.
11
Receiving this liberation
Within myself,
Losing my ‘self’,
I have attained You.

BT Song 1681

4

6

8
