BT Songs 1746 to 1750

BT Song 1746

Both this and the next song were written one after the other, as I was reflecting on the role of Scripture in faith.

Every piece of literature—whether Scripture or otherwise—is limited, in the sense that the words used to record a thought or reflection can never convey it in its entirety. The mind moves in ways, and at a speed, that cannot be fully captured—not even by AI equipped with the fastest recording tools.

In this sense, all writing is only a partial expression of thought. Therefore, when we read or comment on another’s writing, even if we understand the text, we must remember that our critique is confined to the written words—not to the author’s original thought, inner experience, or deeper conviction.

This becomes even more crucial in the case of Scripture, especially when it is granted final authority over one’s faith. Those who claim that their particular Scripture is the very Word of God—revealed, yet recorded through human mental faculties—must recognize the context in which such authority is assigned. That authority exists primarily to safeguard the settled doctrines of that faith, not to confine God within the written word or within any single interpretation of it.

BT Song 1746 – The Speed of Thought

You hold the freedom
To think as you please;
But why, it seems,
That freedom deserts me when I write.

You possess
A strength uniquely your own;
Yet somehow that same power
Fails the written word alone.

Must one explain the reason,
Say it aloud and clear?
Can the swiftness of thought
Ever fully reach the pen?

To shape every thought
Into spoken form—
Is there anyone here
With such perfect skill?

And so, with only
A handful of words,
Whatever is written
Can never be whole.

In the reader’s mind
Those words keep unfolding;
For thought itself
Knows no boundary, no end.

Therefore, whatever
Anyone may write,
Those words alone
Are never just their thought.

Yet the thoughts that rise
Within the heart—
There are no words enough
To tell them all.

Knowing this truth,
One should first read,
Then discern the meaning
That seeks to be said.

To ignore this,
And judge by the letters alone,
Taking the text as the final measure—
That indeed is a fault.

BT Song 1747 – You Came as Writing

You who exist
As the thought behind all thought—
To turn You into letters
Was my own foolishness.

And yet, bearing
With that foolishness of mine,
You truly did come to me
Shaped as written word.

From ancient beginnings
Down to this very day,
Many have lived
Trying to change this custom.

Though many strove
And lived their lives for it,
There is no one
Who truly knew Them.

Yet when some
Set Their thought and action
Into written form,
Preserving them as text,

Many indeed
Read and understood,
And found their lives
Enriched and transformed.

Refusing to remain
As thought alone,
Why did You choose
To come as writing?

Having known You
Through those very words,
When I too
Attempted the same,

Keeping my own need
Within my heart,
You came as writing,
Compressing Yourself.

You whose divinity
Spreads and expands,
Crossing all limits
And every boundary,

You made Yourself simple,
Easy for me to reach,
Offering Yourself
As sacred scripture.

And that sacred text,
I made it my own thought,
And in that understanding
I bowed down and worshipped You.

BT Song 1748

Old age is both a blessing and a burden. As long as we remain in good health, we are able to manage it well. But when illness comes—not only serious ailments, but even minor ones—it often discourages us. For those who live alone, this can become an even greater burden.

I am no exception to this. Yet, knowing the life I have chosen, I continue to surrender myself completely to the Lord, trusting that He will take care of me until the very end.

BT Song 1748

Somehow, I—
am living on;
even when this life
remains unclear.  1

Using me,
You perform Your play;
even when Your will
I cannot know.  2

Do whatever
You choose to do;
I have no path
to act at all.  3

No matter how
I lament within,
there is none here
to hear my cry.  4

“This alone is truth”—
accepting thus,
when I learn
to live with it—  5

Then no fear
remains in me,
while Your grace
abides with me.  6

Many may live
around me still—
what of kin,
what of bonds?  7

Only when
old age arrives,
this quiet truth
is understood.  8

As far as I can,
let me not become
a burden
to another life.  9

This life You gave—
at Your feet I bow,
and thus I live,
in surrender deep.  10

BT Song 1749

The past few days have been quite challenging, as one health issue after another began to emerge—pilonidal sinus, vertigo, acidity, breathing difficulties, along with blood pressure, diabetes, and the presence of a pacemaker.

Since I do not wish to trouble others, I felt the need to make my own decisions regarding further check-ups. Yet, I was also aware of my own limitations, as well as the limitations of others, and this made the decision more difficult.

As I was reflecting on all this, the struggle turned into prayer—and out of that prayer, this song was born.

BT Song 1749

Knowing my state,
understanding my heart,
to help and guide me—
You, my God, are here.  1

Why should unrest
enter my mind?
To whom should I go
to lodge my plea?  2

You who know—
are with me still;
You who clearly
grasp my heart—  3

A certain firmness
rises within;
it makes me live
as one who conquers the world.  4

Restlessness is
the mind’s nature;
when distress comes,
it confuses us.  5

Yet when I
remember You,
a quiet peace
settles on its own.  6

You who were with me
all this while,
will remain still
till the very end.  7

If this assurance
fills my heart,
restlessness fades
and courage is born.  8

That courage—
I need each day;
for that, I need
Your companionship.  9

As always,
without fail,
You must live
with me, ever near.  10

BT Song 1750

Third Anniversary of My Mother

When the last week of December arrives, the final days of my mother’s life in the ashram return vividly—the gentle fading of her breath, and the precious time my sister and I were given to be with her. These memories come back with tears.

This year, when I came to Chennai with my sister, we remembered our mother with love, offering her favourite dishes—sweet pongal, curd rice, and urad vada.

BT Song 1750 — Ever Continuing

Who could ever
stand equal to you?
Whom could I name
as your replacement?

Even the peerless Lord,
Without equal or rival,
Hid Himself within you—
to behold Himself.

Though the body is gone,
the bond still lives;
the mind that remembers you
continues to ache.

Thinking again and again,
shedding silent tears,
life—somehow—
moves on in its own way.

To come quickly
and join you,
again and again
I prayed to God.

Yet even He
chose to delay;
the reason for it
He refused to say.

Without you, life
has turned hollow;
the weight upon my heart
has only grown.

There is no one
with whom I can lay it down,
for no one else
is like you.

Perhaps thinking
“I have become a burden,”
you too went away,
leaving me behind.

But now—
look at my state;
tell me a way
to set this burden down.

That right, I know,
is not yours anymore;
this truth
I understand well.

And yet, the weight
of your remembrance
will remain with me
all my life.

Until the day
I come to you,
this longing within my heart
will go on—
without end.
