BT Song 176

176. you don’t have the right
What kind of punya (merit) I have done
To receive your sweet grace
What else will I do?
Not to forgot your feet
Do I have to tell you, my condition?
So that you will lord over me without my request
Even after I request if you delay
People of this world will laugh at you
People will say thousands of things
But I have rejected them all
Yet I cannot I tolerate/accept
Oh Lord if you reject me
I told this to you everyday
I called you every time
Yet nothing fell in your ear?
Yet I won’t allow you to let you go
Don’t think ever that:
‘Not listening is my choice’
You lost that right already
When you lord over me on that day
1-08-2013 9.00, am. Gurukulam.
Bhakti can go to the extent of giving warning to the Lord that He has no personal choice when it comes to listening to me. I know such extreme views about the Lord may not be acceptable to many. But a bhakta has that kind of right with her Lord, as Arjuna says to Krishna:
Whatever I have rashly said due to carelessness or love, addressing you as ‘O Krishna, O Yadav, O friend’, thinking you only a friend ignorant of your greatness; and the way in which you have been slighted by me in jest while playing, reposing, sitting or dining either alone or in company—I crave forgiveness from you Who are infinite, O Sinless Lord.—Swami Ramsukhadas, Srimad Bhagavadgita: Sadhaka Sanjivani, Gita Press, Gorakhpur, vol. II, Ch. 11: 41-41, p. 861, year not mentioned
Though Arjuna, overwhelmed by the Cosmic form of Krishna sought that forgiveness for becoming so familiar with him in his human form, a bhakta need not ask such forgiveness as she has every right to become informal with her Bhagavan. The Lord has no choice but to listen to the cry of his bhakta as he gets entrapped in the net of bhakti. India has a rich bhakti tradition in which bhakti is expressed through various ways which goes even beyond normal human relationship. At the same time such a mystic experience of bhakti cannot be understood if approached only with reason alone. About this Carman says:
Intellectuals have paid a high price, however, for turning away from bhakti. Neo-Vedantic and “post-liberal” Protestant theology draw on earlier theologies of incarnation—or at least of intermittent divine presence in our degenerate world—but they tend to be bloodless, unable to do justice to either the awesomeness or the mysterious sweetness of the divine-human encounter. —Comments: The Reversal and Rejection of Bhakti. John B. Carman. Pp. 125-128, in, John Stratton Hawley and Donna Marie Wulff, eds. The Divine Consort: Radha and the Goddesses of India, Boston, Beacon Press, 1982. p. 128
Such mysticism in bhakti is not limited to Indian tradition as we note that
Like Rupa Gosvamin {belongs to Gaudiya Vaisnavas of Vallabha}, the medieval Christian theologian Bernard of Clairvaux ({a celibate monk and abbot}1090-1153) elevates love over all other emotions in the devotional life. He finds ample material for the devotional sentiment of love in the biblical Song of Songs. He writes no fewer than eight-six sermons on the first chapters of this short book of Hebrew wisdom literature, which consists of a series of poetic exchanges between two lovers…. God’s emotions are not ordinarily met in kind—the proper response to God’s anger, for example, is fear and repentance—but “When God loves, he desires nothing but to be loved, since he loves us for no other reason than to be loved” (Sermon. 83.4). In these preliminary features—love’s mutuality and its superiority to reverence and familial love—this Christian love of God invites comparison with the Vaishnava love of Krisha…. — Michelle Voss Roberts, Tastes of the Divine, New York, Fordham University Press, 2014, p. 85
And only a holistic approach will help us to understand bhakti in its essence as Roberts observes:
…In a holistic approach to devotional love, human and divine beings love with all their faculties; whatever purification of these faculties means, it does not mean their quiescence. Bodies participate in devotional love. They can be trained to express and perceive the signs of the love of God. The love we know in other forms—with lovers, children, parents, revered authorities, members of our religious communities, animals, or nature—is caught up in our ultimate concern. In these loves, we know something of divine bliss; and in loving, we love God. This holistic view resonates with contemporary retrievals of eros in recent Christian theology. The dichotomous view of love as focused either on the self (eros, Kama) or on the other (agape, Prema) fosters a severely truncated view of eros. Eros is a love that spills over, flows out, and cannot be contained. It is the irrepressible divine love that creates a world entirely to play the game of love within it. —ibid. p. 113

BT Song 177

177. I should be established
I should remove unnecessary relationships
I should remove the desire to fulfill all my needs
I need the of your darshan which never changes
I should bow at your feet without forgetting
Evil thoughts should go away
I should remove my ‘ego’ completely
I should know that you are my foundation
Every day I should worship only you
I should give up evil deeds
I should remove harm from my heart
I should understand that you are God
Every day I should bow at your feet
My thoughts, relationships, and acts
Should be only for you
I should become one and established
In your unchanging love.
2-8-13. 8.30 am. Gurukulam.
When we pray for others, we never pray to God to remove the arrogance, lust, greed, ego etc. from their life. But we pray only for God’s blessings and grace for their life. When it comes to our need, though we can pray and often pray for our mundane needs, yet I begin to pray for my need, finally end up asking God to remove all those things which hinders my relationship with Him.

BT Song 178
This song is based on Gopala Krishna Bharatiyar’s song ‘yen neraumu un sannadiyil naan irrukka vendamo iya’? (Should I not dwell always at your presence)?
178. What merit have I done?
Whenever I come seeking your presence
My heart feels happy that time
You filling my mind and I dwell in bhakti
Even eternity goes like a second
We two staying alone and talk intimately
It is pleasing to the heart and bliss is overflowing
There is no stumbling block to this relation and there is no shortage to this privilege
There is none other than you, once you become my own
What kind of bliss is this what kind of blessedness is this
The kind of Ananda which others cannot understand
The secret that I received from you
Is it possible for me to tell this punya (merit) that I received from you.
3-8-13 9.15 am. Gurukulam.
When we sit in the presence of the Lord, not asking anything in prayer but just think about Him, His attributes, His nature, etc. some kind of bliss fills our heart. When we sit with someone very close to us, we need not even talk. Their very presence is enough for us. We don’t remember how much time went by. I have similar such times with the Lord when I am alone in the ashram.

BT Song 179
179. Looks eternal
Spending a day looks like a Yuga
Even passing an hour looks like a day
Until you come and mingle with me with longing
Each day is passing as wasteful one
Why this separation, why this thirst (Trishna =. Passion)
Why this much anger on this poor one
Without falling on your hand and laying on your chest
Who is going to be profited by such loss of time?
How can I utter this thirst (passion) of mine?
What can I do Oh my beloved one for the lack of mercy?
Oh, Master without reaching your feet
Where else can I find refuge in this world?
5-8-13 6.30 pm. Gurukulam
Another song in viraha bhakti, love in separation, as the lady love is longing for her beloved who delays and wasting the time not coming to her. When I was walking on the outside veranda, I was imagining the kind of separation which one cannot bear who has deep love for each other. Then just for a change I imagined it as the viraha-bhakti and wrote this song.

BT Song 180
180. Your promise is enough
God is the final answer
This is the firm Truth
All the questions that come in the middle
Are nothing but the delusion of my heart
How many questions and how many answers
The questions that arise in my heart are plenty
Striving after through all means
I didn’t find victory except defeat
The people whom I sought are many
The efforts that I put are many
After fighting with my own strength
I reached the feet of the Lord finally
I know that He is the answer
This I experienced several times well
Yet because of the weakness of my mind
I tried again with my own way
The mantra of the (Mukti) Veda:
‘Your ways are not my ways
Your will is not my will’
Is surely the only truth
Therefore, I again approached His feet
Pleaded to forgive and give His grace
Knowing my condition, He accepted me
‘I will protect you till the end’ He said
This one promise is enough for me
How many more times I do the mistakes
Again and again, He will accept me
He will protect me because of His unchanging right over me.
9-8-13. 9.00 am. Gurukulam.
Though the final answer is the Lord alone, several times because of my unstable mind, I do my own plans and do my best to execute them. But once when things go wrong, I come back to Him. As He has right over me, He will finally protect me.
