BT Songs 191 to 195

191  How can I repay?

How can I repay

For you who redeemed me back?

I cannot give gold or material things

I cannot pay back through my body or toil

I cannot do it through my thought and heart

Therefore I come unto you as I am– How can I repay

Can I tell it by words or language?

Can I comprehend it by my thought and intellect

Can I utter it through words

Therefore I come unto you as I am– How can I repay

You accepted me as I came

You gave a change in me

Can I give to you what already yours

Once I become yours what else can I give?– How can I repay

Can you and I be separated?

Is it possible once you and I mingled together

In this who is to give and who is to receive

As I cannot tell this anymore– How can I repay

9-9-2013. 9.00 a.m. Gurukulam.

In the Hindi aarti song the line: tera tujuko arpan kyalage mera (I am offering to you what is already yours; and what is it going to cost me?) very much impressed me.  And in this song I reflected that thought.

BT Song 192

BT Song 192

192. I received good path

I should rejoice in you O noble one

I should be with you

I should forget myself

What else I need any more

Once you gave, hereafter

Are you and I are different

Once I gave myself hereafter

Is separation possible?

Even if I get everything here

If I missed you

How I will be emancipated

How I will overcome

You alone are enough for me and in this world

You alone belong to me

I alone understood this

And received this good path.

A true bhakta demands only God and nothing else.  With Him she is complete and without God nothing can complete her.

BT Song 193

This song is based on the famous Tamil Carnatic song: yenna tavam saidanai Yasoda’ in which the author address to Yasodha, the mother of Krishna, ‘what kind of tapas you have done to get Krishna as your child where many saints, munis and rishis have done great tapas to see Him.’  Based on this song and almost with same tune I wrote this song.

193.  What kind of tapas have you done?

Oh my heart what kind of tapas you have performed

To worship the unchanging

Eternal Being?

The one who created the universe

Who protects it take by taking care

Who is very simple to be approached and

To worship everyday –Oh my heart what

The ancient saints and rishis

Cannot see even after striving hard

The First One

To worship Muktesan– Oh my heart what

The wise and scholars

Cannot see through their intellect

But (He is) very simple to the ignorant

To worship Him by singing everyday– Oh my heart what

One who offered Himself

To remove our sin

One who redeemed sinners

To worship Him with humility everyday– Oh my heart what

One who is graceful to the mean one?

Who has a pure form

One who lord over us everyday

To sing and worship Him with gratitude– Oh my heart what

The one who will come again

And take us along with Him

The unchanging noble one

To worship the king by songs– Oh my heart what

In the song addressed to Yasodha, the author also says that while Brahma and Indra become jealous of her as she could tie Krishna to punish Him for His various mischiefs.  In that song the author celebrates the way Krishna became very simple and approachable to Yasoda as her beloved child.  For me, our Lord became simple and approachable to the innocent and ignorant though the wise and noble were unable to understand Him through their knowledge.  Bhakti celebrates the easy approachability of God by His bhaktas than to the wise who try to understand Him through their wisdom.

BT Song 194

194. I came with my right

You offered yourself only for me

For what reason you saved me

I don’t have anything to offer back to you

Yet you didn’t reject this slave for that

What I have to give and what you have to received

What I have as my own with me

I came empty and will go empty

In between which I can claim as my own

The parents gave this body

Language, thought, intellect given by others

The atman is also your creation

Which one is mine among these?

If I know this truth that is enough

Only this realization belongs to me

After knowing this I came as I am to you

I offered whole heartedly what belongs to you

Refuse to receive is not possible for you

You cannot reject what is yours

I know this secret

Therefore I come back with my right.

23-09-2013, 9.00 am. Gurukulam.

The irony in bhakti is the feeling that I am an empty vessel at the same time I belong to God.  Though I can only return what belongs to the Lord, yet I can do this with my birthright as I am created by Him alone.  God too cannot reject what belongs to Him.  As parents cannot disown a child born with deformity, God too cannot reject a sinner who turns back to Him.

BT Song 195

195. This is the time to have fellowship

This is the time to have fellowship with you

By singing whole heartedly and approaching you—This is the time…

You are not a riddle or un-knowable fine art

Not an unknown relationship or one who does not have a compassionate heart

When you seeking and searching after me came to me

By singing whole heartedly and approaching you—This is the time…

I was overwhelmed; I become tired and bewildered in my heart

I get lost; I was perished and remained far away from you

Searching me with love and as you approached me

By singing whole heartedly and approaching you—This is the time…

I won’t suffer, I won’t be troubled and won’t lament with depression

I came and offered myself and blessing you I gained this status

As came to remove all my karmas

By singing whole heartedly and approaching you—This is the time…

24-09-2013  8.40 am. Gurukulam

This song is also based on one of the famous Tamil Carnatic songs: Vilayada Idhu nerama…’ (Is this the time for you to play with me; when I approach you to tell all my suffering because of my karma?)  In this song the author rebukes, begs and longs for his Lord to listen to him and show the darshan to him.  But changing that mood I wrote that this is the time to have fellowship with the Lord for what He has done for me.

Another aspect of this Tamil poem is that in stanza two and three I used words with similar ending, like:

Malaithen, kalaitthen, tihaitthen, tholainthen, azhinthen, irunthen, varunthen, kalangen, pulamben, vanthen, tanthen, nindren.

Using the same letters at the end even with a single letter for the whole poem is quite common in Tamil. There are several such songs in Kamba Ramayana.  As I am reading Kamba Ramayana (in Tamil) now when I read such songs, inspired by them I attempted to write this song too.

Tamil is one of the richest, ancient classical languages in the world.  I wanted to do my post graduate only in Tamil and become a Tamil professor.  But I missed that opportunity because of the reservation policy.  But I am happy that I was born as a Tamilian to know and enjoy this language.  Even in the United Nations one line from the Sangam Tamil song is written to proclaim its theme to the whole world.  It is

Every place is our own and every people are our relatives—Kaniyan Pungundranar.@

I heard that next to Mukti Veda it is Tirukkural by Valluvar is translated almost in every major language of the world.  G. U. Pope the famous Scottish Missionary requested to write on his grave: ‘The student of Tamil’.

Notes

@ But the context of this song is not promoting any kind of sister-hood among the people of the entire world.  See my article ‘Universal-hood and Tamilians‘ on this in my blog.
