BT Song 196.

196. I came

I came; I came Oh Lord

To praise, sing and celebrate the Charitable one!

I offered myself to you

who has more concern than a mother

I received the right

As reached you by becoming a child.

Didn’t you hear the cry of mine?

Don’t you understand my wretchedness?

How can I justify your unnecessary silence?

Where else can I go? I need the answer!

You never ignored me

You never had any contention with your bhaktas

Yet I cannot understand this delay of yours

I am not going to let you go

Where else have you found a bhakta like me?

Who else owned a slave like me?

Though you give thousands of reasons

I cannot see any tiny bit of justification in it

Why should we have this kind of strife every day?

This is not good for you who knows everything

Is it good for some others to mediate between us?

Can separation come in between us?

25-09-2013. 8.40 am. Gurukulam.

As usual I took my right to fight back with the Lord for His delay in listening to me.  I won’t let Him go without giving any answer.

BT Song 197

This morning when I was taking a bath, I remembered some of my friends and relatives who have gone from life.  Then while taking a bath, I wrote the first eight lines in my mind.  (I have done this several times).  That day I was reading a book on Advaita.  When I was deeply thinking about some of its points, then when I went to get my milk, I wrote the rest of the lines in my mind and when I returned I copied them.

197.  A truth

Everyone has gone

Who came as relatives

Rest will come in back

When I have something in life

Going as we came

Is the reality in life

In the middle nothing is ours

This is the truth

The world is not maya

But the life is also not permanent

Amidst this the ‘mineness’

Is also not correct!

He alone gives

He alone takes back

Responsibility is

Only ours

Let us realize this

Live together

As much as possible

Let us help others

Don’t help expecting in return

Don’t become miserly

Don’t grab by deceiving others

To those who deserve

None will come

Till the end

Union and separation

Will remain permanent in life

Let us understand this truth

And worship God

Till the end He alone remains with us

Let us understand this.

26-09-2013, 6.30. am. Gurukulam.

There is a beautiful Sanskrit sloka in Mahabharata:

–all collections end in dissolution, all tall things end in falling down, unions end in separation; life ends in death—quoted  by P. V. Kane, History of Dharmasastra, Vol. I, Part I.  Ch. 32. The Two Epics. Fn. 404. P. 372

But our bhakti in the Lord never ends viewing life only with pessimism but helps us to see our responsibility to make everyone to enjoy God’s gifts in life.

BT Song 198.

198.  I came

I came, I came I too came

To celebrate by praising you

To celebrate by singing!

Every day seeking your grace

And bowing at your feet and to praise you—I came…

As you know all my needs

To receive them by telling them to you—I came

Even before I ask you are there my King to give

Without any hesitation to tell my need—I came

There is no mother who will give poison if milk is asked

But as you will be more compassionate than her—I came…

To know the highest things than all other things

And to know your will today—I came…

As you know all my need

To establish only your will in me—I came…

As you gave yourself (to me) there is no shortage in anything

Therefore to give like you (back) to (you)—I came…

28-09-2013, 8.45. a.m. Gurukulam.

Another song based on Arunachala Kavirayar Rama Kathai.  In that song Hanuman returns after seeing Sita at Ashoka garden in Lanka.  When the anxious Rama saw him, knowing his anxiety, he first uttered the word ‘Kanden’ (saw I).  Because by mistake if Hanuman says, ‘Sita was found by me…’ that may trouble Rama thinking that something happened to her before he could complete the whole sentence, Hanuman who earned the title ‘Solin selvan’ (rich in Words) fist uttered the word ‘found’, which revived and relaxed Rama.  Then Hanuman tells, in what kind of wretched condition she lives in and how Ravana approached her to seduce and threaten her. But how she despised him by warning him that she has the capacity to burn him alive because of her chastity, but as it will bring defame to Rama’s valour, she let Ravana go alive’.

It is a beautiful song and the music is spell bounding.  Those who knows Tamil can listen to it in Internet if they have time and interest: கண்டேன் கண்டேன் கண்டேன் சீதையை; கண்டேன் ராகவா;

Asking for our needs is our legitimate right. But more than that to know that He will give even before we ask is the essence of bhakti. But the climax in it is to know His will and abiding in Him.

BT Song 199

199. realized the truth.

What is my foolishness?

What is my ignorance

Not knowing the Lord

Who gave Himself?

What is the use of?

A noble birth

Several achievements

Not knowing God?

The thought that I have

Beauty with intellect

Ability for leadership

Are mine?

Not respecting anyone

Not listening to others

Considering only my wisdom

The way I thought highly about myself?

How much pride

What kind of arrogance

Though I stumble

Losing everything?

Forgiving the time

Of my ignorance about Him

He came after seeking me

And redeemed me

All my glory is garbage

My knowledge is waste

All my acts are shameful

If I think about them I feel sad

Finally I realized

I understood God

After losing myself

I experienced the truth.

30-09-2013. 8.30 am. Gurukulam.

A reflection of what Sevanand said in Phil. 3:5ff.  Before knowing the Lord, though not openly bragging, there was a hidden pride about my birth, beauty, intellect and achievements.  And when the Lord encountered me, then I realized how foolish I was to take them as credit.  I realized they are more of a snare than a blessing, if I fail to realize that some natural talents that I have are gifts from God to serve others and not to take them as my inheritance because of my birth in some family or community.  In fact, only after I became the bhakta of the Lord I saw how talented are others in their own way in spite of their birth or brought up.  One time at Rewa when a farmer said that he does not know anything like me.  But in response I said, ‘I don’t know how to plough the land. If you give me the bulls and plough, I will hurt myself first and will injure the bulls.  But you are more talented than me in that field’.  Then I told him the famous familiar story of a pandit (Brahmin), a businessman (vaisya) and a soldier (Kshatriya) crossing Ganga in a boat taken by a kevat (boat man, a shudra).  First the business man asked the kevat does he know how to save and reinvest?  And the response was ‘no’.  Then he said he has wasted a quarter of his life.  Listening to this soldier asked whether he knows how to protect himself and his own family, as usual the response was ‘no’.  Then he said that he has wasted half of his life. Listening to them all, the pandit asked whether he ever learnt a simple ritual to do puja to earn merit. As usual when the ‘no’ answer came from the kevat, the pandit said that he wasted three fourth of his life.  That time the boat caught in a severe whirlpool. Then the kevat asked them whether the three ever learnt swimming. And they said ‘no’.  Then before jumping in the water to save his life, the boatman said ‘you all have wasted your whole of your lives’.

For the first time in my life I learnt to respect and accept other people as fellow human beings like me, though initially I struggled to have a good rapport with non-Indians.

BT Song 200.

200.   Somehow I didn’t know

Somehow I didn’t know

That this is the God who redeemed me?

Searching several places

Learning several things

Doing several acts

Doing so many penances—Somehow…

Though I learnt the world

Though I reached height

Though I progressed in life

Though I gained strength—Somehow…

Though I made several efforts

Though I made several progress

Without knowing my fall

Though I continued to live—Somehow…

Finally one day

I knew the truth

I realized that

None of them help—Somehow…

Broken in heart

Constrained in spirit

I fell at His feet

And quickly He saved me.

30-09-2013 9.000 am. Gurukulam.

This is based on Gopala Krishna Bharatiyar’s song: yedo theriyaamal pochude’ (Somehow I didn’t know, what then I can do?). A famous song about Nataraja.  As I listened to that song the previous evening, the next morning when I was thinking about its meaning, I wrote this song.  Then I compared my ignorance of not knowing the Lord and how finally He redeemed me.

Several songs that I listen to in Carnatic music about other deities help me to reflect my life and journey.  Not only their music but their deep meaning still inspires me to write songs based on them about the Lord. Some may question it by asking, when our Lord can inspire us to write new songs, why should we copy or imitate them’?

For me all that God used to prepare me to become His bhakta can’t be abandoned now. God continues to use them to inspire me through my own culture and tradition.  They are God’s gift in my heritage, though they may not directly point out the Lord.  As I have said a lot on this subject, there is no need here to repeat them again.
