BT Song 311.

BT Song 311. I know you have mercy
For those who think only about you
And who come unto your feet
Nothing is lacking
I tell this with experience.
Those who forget themselves
Who deny themselves
And give them for others
I know that you have mercy (for them).
Those who have angry
And too much frustration
Who have no peace within them
There is no mercy, this too I know.
Those who have patience
And who tolerate
Who understood their responsibility
You become their strength. I know this.
Those who find fault
Who live by complaining often
And refuse to see good in others
Will never have comfort, this I understood
I have all these within me
And I lost your support
Yet pleading not to forsake me
I come unto you
Is this correct on your part
Is it right for you to become angry with me?
Is it right for you to reject this slave?
Who comes and pleads unto you?
Where else can I go?
To whom I can tell this?
Whatever you say
I won’t leave your feet.

As I cannot sleep, I got up and began to think various things about the Lord and my relationship with Him. When I think only about myself, I become more self-centred and self-righteous. Then I get depressed. But when I think about my relationship with the lord; or His relationship with me, then I found a solace there. That time I wrote this song.
BT Song 312

BT Song 312 Parrot song
The one who gives Himself for us
And who supports us by His grace
I will bow before Him—O Parrot
I will Hail Him every day!
He came to redeem us
He gave Himself for us to be redeemed
The one who protects the world—O parrot
I will Praise Him with joy
The one who provides each day
The one who guards us
The simple one to the bhakta—O Parrot
I will sing with inner love
The one who is acceptable for the simple ones
The one who came with much humility
The One Who is God for all—O Parrot
We will glorify Him (as the Lord for all)
The one who died on the tree
The one who redeemed us by giving Himself
The single redeemer for the entire world—O Parrot
We will bow before the Master
How ever we praise Him
How ever we glorify Him
He will never change—O Parrot
And will remain within me.

Last night I listened to a Carnatic music program. The one song which is written in ‘Sandam’ music style continued to echo in my mind today also. Even when I was reading a book, the same kind of music was echoing within me. Then I stopped reading the book and wrote this song in the same music form. This kind of Parrot song or addressing birds, animals, cloud, rain, wind are quite common in Indian music tradition. I addressed this song to the Parrot. Nothing special in the meaning. But if you listen to such a song the music will help you to get uplifted in your spirit. If this song is sung in Sandam mixing with ‘Punnahavarali’ it will be marvellous. I will post the voice recording soon.
BT Song 313

BT Song 313 I will live by your grace
Are the blessings that you bestowed are few to count?
I remember whole heartedly O my Lord
That grace which you provide each day
And bow unto you with true love.
Are the mistakes that have done are few to tell
And I live each day with fear
To confess all of them to you
Therefore, I came unto you to confess that.
I shrink with in me
And is rebuking me
Unable to do anything further
I came unto you longing again
There is no more use in
Lamenting about the past
And sit with remorse on the dust
Therefore, I will come unto your feet to bow.
You received me again by forgiving me
And wholeheartedly you accepted me
Therefore, I will live each day
Because of your grace again.
23-7-15, Mathigiri, 5.30 am.
As I got up very early in the morning after having tea, I read Muktiveda and began to pray. Once again all the blessings that I received from Him alone occupied my mind. As I began to count them one by one, there was no end. Then stopping counting and praying, I began to write this song as the first line came as a prayer in my mind. Then the rest of the song followed naturally and I completed this song as my prayer that day.
The human tendency is that we cannot forget the past that much easily. Though God throws our past sins in the deep water and puts a sign board ‘no more fishing’, yet a penitent heart will always remember the wretchedness of the past. At least in my case, whenever I think about the grace of God, I remember in which situation I received His mercy. In my life, I was redeemed from such a confusion where I couldn’t find a solution to my inner struggle. So, when I count the blessings automatically all that I have done in the past before receiving His grace raises their ugly head. Above all, it also helps me not to become ‘self-righteous’ when I see others in similar condition or judge them when I see others fall back. This is a riddle in a bhakta’s life: ‘we are saved sinners but struggling saints’.

BT Song 314

BT Song 314 I will do upacharam
By singing with the language of silence
By tuning the veena (harp?) of heart
Giving thala (beat) with my mind
I will sing songs each day.
Arranging the stage in my heart
Dancing with brimming emotions
With a thala of ‘tandattam’
I will dance the joyful dance.
Adding music with sweet Tamil
Mixing with the nectar of love
Inviting you with the bliss of bhakti
I will offer myself to you with all these (upacharas = services)
Is there any better upacahram other than this?
Tell me where you will receive other than here
You accept this with a pleasing heart
This poor came with inner longing today.
By keeping your feet on my head, thinking,
How many upacharams can I perform?
When I was waiting for you with much humility
By tying the towel in my waist
Do you need to knock on the door by standing outside?
Do I need to say, ‘Please come in’?
Do I need bliss more than this?
As this slave is waiting for your visit with much enthusiasm?

This is a beautiful experience which is very difficult to translate in English. The word ‘ubacharam’ is used for all the seva that we need to do to a guest. Traditionally it is known as ‘sodacha upacharam’ =sixteen@ kinds of ‘upacharam’.
Of course, this is done to a deity. But the context is that a deity is treated as a ‘guest’ in a house. So, all the sixteen upacharas done to the guest also should be done by the deity. Though these are written in the context of a Brahmin receiving another Brahmin as a guest, yet many parts of them are done till the recent past and few are still practised—as part of our tradition.
But tonight when I begin to sit for my regular meditation, I try to do my sadhana of ‘silence’, which I like the most. Then some inspiration prompted me to write a poem. Then I said, ‘let me remain silent. As even writing a song spoils the sadhana of silence’. But I cannot continue much as the inner compulsion began to write the song in my mind. As the line began to flow, I took a paper and wrote this song, telling what kind of ‘upacharam’ that I can do for the Lord.
I know I cannot give the correct and best translation for this song. But if you want to understand the mood and the spirit in which I wrote this song, you have to read that rough translation. Otherwise, learn Tamil to understand the meaning and the mood of this song.
@…The sixteen types of service are:–invocation (Aavaahana); offering the seat (Aasana); water offering (Arghya); washing of the feet (Paadya); water for rinsing the mouth as a mystical rite (Aacamana); oil bath (Abhyanga snaana); (p.69) offering of cloth (Vastra); Scents (Gandha); flowers (Puspa); incense (Dhuupa) lamps (Dipa); food offering (Nivedana); waving of lights (Niiraajana); betel leves (Tambuula); obeisance (Namaskaara); and mystical discharge and conclusion (Visarjana).—ANCIENT INDIAN TRADITION & MYTHOLOGY; Translated by A board of Scholars, Edited by Prof. J.L.Shastri, Delhi; Mothilal Banarsidass Pub.

BT Song 315 Noble means
My anger won’t have any influence on others
My ‘righteousness’ won’t DEMONSTRATE God’s Righteousness
With ‘self-righteousness’ when I began to find fault in others
The log in my eyes won’t be visible.
If we mover very close, the fire will burn us
If we keep the vessels close (to each other) they will make noise@
The tala (drum beating) from a distance alone will be pleasant to listen#
Only by keeping some distance, the relationship also be good. %
Only by give and take truth will be realized
If the thread is pulled from both sides, it will be broken
But to the question, ‘who should give up (or adjust) first’
The immediate answer will be ‘the other’.
Those who are matured won’t be adamant in this
The old always give up first (as there is no choice for them)
Everyone will learn the lesson that:
‘The cattle which jumps too much alone will carry heavy load’&
The young calf never experience fear$
The ‘youth-hood’ won’t understand others burden
Yet once the body becomes weak
Nobody can ‘play’ too much
Those who realize that things will come to them which happen to others
Won’t find fault in others
Those who think that nothing will change till the end
Will fall suddenly
Not committing sin though become upset with anger
Learning to see good in others though they have shortcomings
By give and take and encouraging
Living alone is the noble means.

Another song expressing the ‘generation gap’ between the old generations with the youths. The line that divides between ‘disciplines’ versus ‘moral policing’ is very thin. When I become upset and rebuke for the irresponsibility on the part of young people, they become more rebel. The loss is not something material, though that is the starting point. Particularly if that loss is not personal but that of others and when the youths don’t take it seriously, it bit disturbs me. But this tension between the ‘old’ and ‘young’ generation is the old rhetoric: the old always complaining and the young always ignoring. This reminds me one thing that I read about Socrates. He said, ‘the present young generation has no respect for the old. They often waste their time and become very lazy. They love to stand before the mirror and admire their own body and beauty etc.’ (these are not the exact words but something similar). Now we can replace the word ‘mirror’ to ‘mobile’ that too smart phone or computer. If this kind of generation gap existed (in record) some 2,500 years before, it will continue to exist in future too. But who to adjust is a big question. Most of the time the elders give up as there is no choice for them. Though we all share in some universal problem, each situation (or person) needs separate solution. And for me that solution is writing this kind of poem or a brain storm in the name of ‘article’ (by an old man which again the youths will continue to ignore.).
