BT Song 346

BT Song 346 Unknown secret
We can worship God through bhakti
As bhakta we can worship God’s feet
But if we began to poke our buddhi (elitist intellect) in this
Will become a made person; know this you fool!
Are there words to utter bhakti?
Is there any ritual to become a bhakta?
Is there any intelligence (buddhi) to understand bhakti?
Other than understanding by living as a bhakta
When a bhakta worship God
Are they uttering (songs) words using their buddhi?
They use few words to express the bliss
Which they enjoy because of their bhakti
The joyful status which they expressed through their songs
If we began to analyse using our buddhi
Till the end we won’t get the answer
And others cannot understand that secret
They lived their life as simple bhaktas
And communicated their thoughts through few words
They immersed in the ocean of bhakti
And attained mukti through that proper means
Striving in the same path
Let us also attain that noble status
But if we lose our buddhi by analysing (too much)
Then we will remain in our own ignorance.
I wrote this song after reading the book: John Stratton Hawley, A Storm of Songs: India and the Idea of the Bhakti Movement, Cambridge, Harvard University Press, 2015. This is what I wrote at the end of the book
This book confuses more than giving clarity on the so-called ‘bhakti movement’. No lay people claims or recognizes that such a ‘movement’ is possible out of bhakti or for bhakti. This is a project for intellectuals, whereas a common bhakta finds solace in her simple bhakti in her chosen deity’.
Whatever might be the records about the ‘bhakti songs’ sung by the bhakti saints, they never wrote their bhakti songs thinking or hoping to create any such ‘bhakti movement’? Most of the bhakti saints have to keep the doctrine of their sampradaya at bay. However, most of the songs are more ecstatic in nature than theological or historical records of any such ‘bhakti movement(s)’. All the hagiographic records later compiled by their followers are nothing but an attempt to textualize their life and teaching. And now if we begin to write any book based on those hagiographic records, we will more complicate the matter than get any clarity. Of course, writing such a book is the prerogative of the elitist and intellectuals but thank God the simple bhaktas are happy to live in their simple bhakti world. I am one such. More see my review on this book.

BT Song 347

BT Song 347 should know you through bhakti
How sweet is it to be with you?
And to know you through simple bhakti
How cruel is it to strain the mind
By reading many things and still remaining barren!
But more cruel than this is to
Talk philosophy and entering in too many arguments
And debating one’s way as the HighWay
Not respecting others and not realizing about oneself
Not living in the present even for a minute
And analysing the past carefully
And talking many things about the future
They lose their PRESENT permanently
We should analyse the things of the past
And should think and plan about the future too
At the same time should live in the present
And enjoy the bliss in everyday life
Forgetting this and talking thousands of philosophies
And debating using so many words
Not wasting the life without any use
Should know you through bhakti each day.
14-11-2015, Mathirigi, 2.50 pm.
This song is also my continuous meditation about the bhakti movement and all the scholarly debates on it. Though I am immensely benefited by such scholarly works, yet my bhakti in the Lord helps me to enjoy my relationship with Him ‘one day at a time’ rather than analyzing my bhakti with various points of views.

BT Song 348 I should analyse myself
I should analyse myself
And I should search you often within me
How much I look (pretend) outwardly
I should probe me within myself
After reading many things
How ever I say many things to others
How far they are true within me
This I should scrutinize within me.
I should not proclaim any concept
Which I do not believe within me
What I cannot practice
I should not teach others.
Stopping all works (karma) and controlling my mind
I should sit at your feet for some time
And I should give myself unto you
For you to analyse me that time.
Assigning few seconds and controlling the mind
Bowing at your feet and knowing your will
And to live accordingly each day
I should examine myself often.
17-11-15, Mathigiri. 2.50 pm.
After my regular reading of Muktiveda and other books, I began to write my response on exclusivism to a bhakta. When I completed it, I said to myself in Tamil, ‘now it is time for me to search myself’. As the same words continue to repeat again and again in my mind, I wrote this song. As I am reading CWG (Complete Works of Mahatma Gandhiji) vol. 12, I am often challenged by the way Gandhiji lived and wrote about his life to others. He never wrote or gave advice to others in which he does not believe or practice in his life. And when I compared my life with him, I realized how small I was before him. Then I wrote this song as my prayer.
Song 349

BT Song 349 One who bestows blessings
Giving blessings is very easy for you
As it is your very nature
Coming to you seeking your blessing become my habit
Where else can this poor one go?
Giving become very simple thing to you
As charity becomes your natural habit
Asking become my right
As you told me to ‘ask’
Giving in abundance become your character
As providing become your dharma/duty
Seeking unto you become my condition
As you take care of me with love
I proclaim this each day as I received from you
And glorifying your nobleness through my tongue
I praise your nature each day
As you give grace as boon in my life.
18-11-15, Mathigiri, 2.00 pm.
As I was thinking about so many blessings that I received from God, inspite of my weakness and failures in life, made me to reflect upon His nature/character. At the same time as His child asking Him so many blessings too become my birth right in Him as He alone told me to ‘ask’. As I was meditating on this subject, I wrote this song.
BT Song 350

BT Song 350 I keep silence
I will sit at the shadow of your feet
I will offer myself at your feet
I will think about you in the temple of my heart
And I will praise you without ceasing in my mind.
I don’t know to go any other place other than you
I don’t know any other refuge other than you
I never want to know other than your will
I know only to be with you.
I come unto you to tell something
But I am bewildered unable to tell anything
Not knowing how to tell and what to tell
I keep quiet
Though I utter some prayers to you
And communicate through words and language
Yet I don’t know any other bliss
Other than to come and sit at your feet silently
I seek the joy of remaining ‘quiet’
I seek that status which stands beyond words and language
I beg that nobleness of being with you
And ask you to give a heart to experience that now.
22-11-15, Mathigiri, 11.05 pm.
When I sat for meditation, I thought, when I am going to stop even this meditation and be in His presence just for His sake. I know there are no words to describe that sadhana. And reaching that stage is beyond my reach. However, I expressed that longing through this song.
