BT Song 416

BT Song 416 I gained by losing
Don’t get disappointment
By expecting anything from me
Don’t become tired
By blaming me often
What is the use of?
Asking to the one who is already poor
My condition is pitiable one
As I lost even what little I had
Why this contention
Once you know this truth
Believe me
I told the fact
But if you pretend as if you don’t know
What can I do?
You again argue
Knowing it well
Don’t you know?
My nature already?
Don’t you understand?
What all the things that I have lost
Knowing this alone you called me
And therefore, I came (unto you)
Yet (if) you demand from me
What can I do?
The heart
That I had
Already I gave it to you
Along with rest of the things
along with it
Become yours
What else are your expectations?
Tell only that to me
Did I ever claim?
What I gave to you as my own?
Once I become your slave
With folded hands
Did I ever ask for freedom?
I have done your service
This least one (among your servants)
Who waits for your commands?
If you give one word
I will come running
I will do
According to your will
I will never leave
Your holy presence
I never knew disobedience
Once I took refuge unto you
How can I say this?
More than this?
How to show my humility
More than this
Now I understood
What is your expectation?
Please listen to me
That is not necessary
You expect me to demand
As I have the right as you redeemed me
You ask me to come
With the right as your child
You ask me to remove
Any hesitation
Like a child
Which runs towards its mother?
Once you become
All kinds of relationship to me
What is yours
Become mine
What is there for me to come back?
With a particular relationship
Is this alone
Your expectation
Is there any wonder
More higher than this
Have ever God
Become my own
As you give me back
Which I have once lost
Is there any nobleness
More than this
Is this alone
What did you expect from me?
Did you ask me to remove it?
Only this defect in me
To give all
Back to me
Did you come back again?
By giving yourself to me
29-4-16, Mathigiri, 11.45 pm.
As I became very tired both in mind and body, I couldn’t do much reading or thinking tonight. So instead of my meditation time, I retired to my bed, but as usual, unable to sleep. After tossing several minutes on my bed, I said to the Lord in Tamil, ‘Don’t get disappointed by expecting anything from me’. After a few minutes again I said to Him, ‘don’t become tired by merely blaming me. What is the use of asking one who doesn’t have anything’? Then the inspiration came to write this as a poem. But as I became tired I said ‘no’ and tried to resist the urge. But as a pregnant woman cannot push back the child once the labor pain started, as I resisted the urge to write the poem, more and more words began to pour in my mind continuously as a poem. Only those who write poems can understand this experience. When we get inspiration and first line or words once formed, then next words and thoughts will continue to flow—sometime without any gap, faster than we can write them down. So unable to resist further, I got up with murmur—even now poem also began to pester me, I began to write this as a poem. When I want to close it with four stanzas, the thought continues to flow and forces me to write a long poem on this thought.
BT Song 417

BT Song 417 Only tears will unload the burden
This burden will go
Only in weeping
We know that
The dead won’t comeback
What is the use of?
Lamenting
But who can withstand
Such a loss?
Years may go
Quickly
Along with it
Memories might disappear
Yet the relationship
That we had with them
Will often come and
Remind us the vacuum
The body will
Disappear one day
But the relationship
Will remain forever
Through some means
In each generation
The beauty of relationship
Will continue
God alone gave
This great status
He gave relationship
For humanity to continue
He linked human beings (through relationship)
For the continuation of humanity
And made them to live
Generation after generation
The past generation
Is not in our memory
We may not see
The future generation
But through our generation
He made a bridge
To link
Each generation
Arranging a separation
Through death
He set a rule
For humanity to continue
To unload that
Burden of separation
He gave a heart
To weep
To mingle
Relationship and separation
With each other
And making them complete
Keeping both
Joy and sorrow in them
He created us
To live on earth
30-4-16, 11.00, am. Mathigiri
Today is the 10th death anniversary of Prasad. For the past two days I was thinking about him. I wanted to call his mother and wife. At the same time I know that my calling is going to increase their pain of separation more. However this morning I first called Prasad’s mother. The moment she spoke both of us began to cry, unable to control our sorrow. Then I called his wife, but only I was crying and she said, ‘Swamiji you should not cry. Your shishya has gone nowhere. He is only with us.’ Anyhow I found it difficult to control myself and continued to cry thinking about him. He is very close to me.
Knowing the fact that crying over dead people is foolish think. But according to my personal conviction, God mercifully gave the emotion of crying to release our burden. For me crying for those who passed away is not an act of foolishness but another way of celebrating the importance of human relationship.
Though gradually we will lose the memory of those who passed, often the way we miss their relationship will come and remind us about the vacuum that death has created. Of course the body will perish but the relationship that we have with others will continue generation after generation. God both allowed death and created relationships for the continuation of humanity. We won’t remember our previous generation and many won’t see the future ones but through our life and relationship we become the link to join them. Though death is a blessing for the continuation of humanity, tears are a means to unload the burden. So relationship and separation is a mixed one. And we have joy and sorrow in them both. But this is part of life. So along with death, tears are also a blessing for me from God.
Though I am a great admirer of Mahatma Gandhiji, I cannot agree with him on several issues. And his view on shedding tears for the dead is one such. When I read the following comments complaining about the Hindus weeping over the dead is not agreeable to me. I cannot understand his statements that Hindus weep because of their fear about death. Rather for me weeping over the dead is another kind of celebrating relationship. The Muslims may not mourn for death but might weep publicly over a dead body, as they too miss them much. But when any bombast happens in Muslim countries, I have seen many men and women crying on the very scene. This shows that they too are human beings and betrays what Gandhiji said about them.
206. PUNJAB LETTER
LAHORE,
Magh Sud 6 [January 27, 1920]
…The sight of the dead body of Abdul Hafeez was heart-rending. I was overwhelmed with grief as I looked upon that sturdy frame and that charming face, but I took heart from the fortitude of the Muslim brethren standing around. I observed no wailing and weeping near the body. The people were exchanging
remarks, unmoved with fear, as though standing round someone in deep sleep, and described to me how he had been killed. The scene appealed to me greatly. I thought of the wailing and crying usual among the Hindus. I wished that we were delivered from that horror. I also told myself that we could do a great many things if we discarded this fear of death. I have often felt that the followers of Hinduism, who
should least fear death, fear it most. The very thought of this makes me feel ashamed. We learn right from our childhood that the soul is immortal and the body transitory, and that every act will have its consequence. Why then do we fear death? The only son of Abdul Hafeez was standing by my side. He too spoke as if untouched by fear. May God give peace to the soul of Abdul Hafeez. (p.356)

Anyhow the following response from Dr. Hoefer will help us to understand the Islamic theology about crying:
“Jesus wept” (Jn 11:35), seemingly out of grief for the loss of His friend and the suffering of the sisters. Death is “the last enemy” (I Cor 11:56).
In regard to Muslims not crying at a loved one’s death, it is rooted in their theology. One of the expectations in the Quran for pious Muslims is that they accept events without grumbling. “Islam” means to submit, so Muslims should submit to every event as the will of God, without complaining. Allah then counts this pious submission as merit in their reckoning before Him in the Final Judgment.
A Western reporter in the Middle East related this statement from an interviewee: “The difference between you in the West and we Muslims here is that you love life and we love death.” Life is tough here, but the glorious joys of heaven, as described in the Quran, await those who have proved themselves worthy.
God bless.

I like what Wright says on emotion:
…There is an implicit pressure to stifle our real feelings because we are urged, by pious merchants of emotional denial, that we ought to have “faith” (as if the moaning psalmists didn’t). So we end up giving external voice to pretended emotions we do not really feel, while hiding the real emotions we are struggling with deep inside….— Christopher J. H. BT Song

BT Song 418 What is your answer?
Thousands of thoughts
Cornering the mind
Where is the place
For me to think about you
Worries constantly
attacking me
Where can I find time?
To worship you?
Constantly thinking
Only about me
And lamenting
Considering all my needs
Continuously seeking
After them
And if you interfere in it
You will be in great trouble
You stand bye
For some time
If you interfere
Only accident will happen
What do you know?
About my frustrations
If you interfere unnecessarily
I am not responsible for that
I understand
Your concern
And I am living
Without any commitment
Yet the way
The body demands
What can I do?
I have no answer (for this)
Yet you
Refuse to let me go
If I refuse to obey
You take the stick
Unless beaten
The cattle won’t obey
You give punishment
For me to obey
But I become
Immune to your punishments
And become tired of
Receiving all your spanks
What can one do for that?
It becomes habitual
Therefore my condition
Become very pitiable one
I have an answer
For this with me
You too know
About it
The permission
Is with you
To complete the
Running quickly
When you will sanction
Is the only question
Give me the
Answer to this now
If you keep mum
What can I do now?
What is the point?
Of lamenting about it?
Bengaluru, 5-5-16, 9.30 pm.
As I came to one house to spend a few days calmly and quietly, I sat in his garden watching the way he trains his son for cricket. But the chair on which I sat was very comfortable and also we can easily fold it and carry it wherever we like. It also has special provisions to keep the water bottle on the right side hand. So I enquired where he got this chair. Immediately he said that as he is not using that chair anymore, I can take it if I want. Then I said ‘yes’ and said that I would like to buy two more for the ashram as others will find it more comfortable and we can easily carry them.
But after this small conversation, as he continued to train his son, I began to think about my own wretched condition. I came here to be quiet and calm and spend more time with the Lord without any need to look after my mother. I don’t even want to go to the ashram as it will force me to do so many things which will deprive me of this quiet time. But soon after coming here, I began to think only about my physical needs and looking after the things to collect for the ashram. So my self-centeredness does not allow me to give time for the Lord. Though He tries to correct me by giving some punishments, yet nothing seems to work in my life. Though God is not going to give it up, yet till the end both He and I need to struggle in this area. So the only option left with Him is to take me back with Him. And I throw that challenge to Him to give me the answer and not to keep silent, if at all He is so much worried and concerned about the way I think more about my materials needs. Then as I recalled my thoughts that night I wrote this song.
BT Song 419

BT Song 419 I need not raise my voice
I raise my voice unto you
And beg you to have mercy on this poor one
I come unto your feet
To live better in each day
There is nothing new for me to say to you
Nothing remains as a riddle to you (in my life)
The one who knows all that is in my heart
I need not even utter anything (new)
I become tired of repeating the same again and again
But I will become depressed if I don’t tell them (to you)
As long as you are there to listen to me
I will never keep my mouth shut
None will like a person who is always lamenting
If one began to complain whole day none will listen to him
But what else they can do, as they too have their own troubles
And they too become tired by carrying their burden
As you are not like them
I come unto you often to share my shortcomings
When you listen to the voice of so many people
Let me know whether my voice reaches you or not?
As this doubt came to me
For you to listen my voice
I raise my voice to call you
‘Can you hear me’, let me know that alone
This is the reason for me to raise my voice
But this is a mistake, Lord have patience with me
You always hear me who is within me
Why should I raise my voice for others to hear?
Coming silently and sitting at your feet
Remaining with you and not telling anything
Once I began to listen what you want to say
My voice will also stop at that time.
Bengaluru, 6-5-16, 10.00 pm.
As I sat silently for prayer and meditation on the bay window in the hall, looking outside the window I said to the Lord, ‘there is nothing new for me to say or meditate (or write). I am just repeating the same thought again and again using only different words and terms. I myself become tired of this repetition and rhetoric. How much more others get frustrated to listen or read the rhetoric.’ Then I sat quietly not even praying but only thinking what would be God’s response. Then I thought that though others become tired of listening to all my complaints and repetitions He will listen to them how much I repeat. But why should I even raise my inner voice even to pour out my heart to Him as He is there to understand and listen to all my inaudible communications. Then I wrote this song.
BT Song 420

BT Song 420 Will it to be too much
When you have decided to give many gifts
Can any one stop them?
How much may I have?
Will it become too much when you have decided to give more?
I measured with an empty hand
I tried to sell (promote) by vain talk
I lived as an empty vessel
I become a needle without the eye (hole)
Somehow you had mercy on me
For some reason you had pity on me
When I lived as a dry land
You came as rain having compassion on me
I never had the thought of coming unto your feet
I don’t have time to sit at your feet
I neither have the desire to read your Words
I never have the longing to talk to you
Yet you have decided not let me to go (like that)
I have none other than you to over lord me
Even though I try to run away to avoid you
It became your duty to redeem me chasing me
Tell me what else I am going to miss in life
What to say as you never denied anything to me
Once you become my own
I don’t know what to ask you any more
As I came unto you by leaving everything
You gave double fold as I have lost
If I sowed one you gave hundred for that
And you removed ‘nothingness’ from my life
Giving abundantly become your nature
Whoever try to stop you, you won’t listen to them
Once I give up the thought of ‘mine’
My life also becomes your own.
Bengaluru, 6-5-16, 11.00 p.m.
As I had a quiet and calm night and I was walking in the hall enjoying my time alone with God. Then I began to think about all the gifts and blessings that God has given in my life. Though I am happy to have few talents to serve others, several times they also become a burden not only to me but for others also. For example, as I like cooking, several times when I visit others’ houses, I will begin to IMPOSE my recipes on them and insist on cooking some new dishes for them. Unable to say ‘NO’ to me at the same time not to take risk of new demonstrations (waste of their time, provisions, and above all leaving lots of utensils to clean at the end) they will tolerate. Similarly writing poems also often becomes a burden even to me. But I said to myself, ‘if you have decided to give so many blessings and gifts can anyone stop it’. Then I wrote this song immediately.
