BT Song 561
As I got up early in the morning, as I could not sleep further, after my morning work, I sat with a cup of tea to worship the Lord. But that time some articles that I am writing and the response which I was giving on some debate again preoccupied my mind. After allowing my mind to wander for a few minutes, I dragged it back deliberately and said, ‘there are other good means to spend my time usefully than investing (or wasting) in entering unnecessary debates and controversial issues in life. Because when I began to think about them, I began to play both the purva paksha [former side] and uttara paksha [later side]. I will ask the question which the other person will raise against me [purvapaksha] and I will give my response to it [uttara paksha]. This we call in Tamil ‘Tharkkam, vaadam, vidandavadam, yedirvadam, pidivatham, timirvadam’. Then I said this early morning is time to worship and pray and not waste unnecessary arguments within my mind. Then I wrote this song as my prayer.

BT Song 561 Let us get rid of unnecessary thoughts
There are many ways to spend
Our time usefully
Removing all unnecessary thoughts
We can seek the grace of God
There is always unnecessary argument in each day
We add our adamant nature to it
Thousands of arguments joining them
We will lose the peace of mind slowly
Argument will create counter argument
It will increase our adamant nature
Argument and counter argument will increase unnecessary argument
And many vain debates will come up
Did God give a mind only for this?
Did He ever ask us to spend our time like this
In order to show thousands of good things
Did He ever refuse to show good path
Let us go and sit at His feet
And listen to His words
When He is ready to give time for that
Leaving that let us not have unnecessary thoughts
We have lost many good things by refusing to do this
And we can gain many things by reaching His feet
Realizing this if we repent then peace will come back
Refuse to do so is our own individual choice

BT Song 562
1.45, Surdas, 398, p. 691
Another song inspired by Surdas. Though Hawley tried his best to communicate the original in translation, yet the spirit which is in the original is missing in the translation. As I can read and understand Hindi a bit, but cannot follow the Brajbhasa completely his translation helped me to catch the meaning. At the same time my little knowledge in Hindi helped me to catch the true spirit. So after reading the English translation, when I read it in the original Brajbhasa, as I was much inspired I wrote this song. Of course my song is not the literarily translation of the theme of the song. Getting some inspiration, borrowing based on some points of Surdas I used my own words writing in Tamil###
“Purifier of the Fallen” they call you, Hari,
But who could have given you such a name?
For I am an aching waif, caught in the worldly round,
Mumbling your name before your door.
Time and again I’ve been cooked in the womb,
Born through the torture of water and blood,
And though you were near then, Hari, I left:
I fled to feed on a hundred sins instead.
Eplephant, prostitute, monarch, Brahman, hunter—
What makes me count for any less than they?
Now here I am again, suffering the spear of life,
The merciless axe of time: those hordes
Of scoundrels on whom you’ve showered pity—
What have I accomplished less than they?
I just don’t know, says Sur the magnificent fool:
What failing have I possibly forgotten? —Sur’s Ocean, eds. Kenneth E Bryant, trs. By John Stratton Hawley, Massachusetts, Murty Classical Library of India, Harvard University Press, song 398, p. 691

BT Song 562

BT Song 562 Redeemer
You got the name the ‘Redeemer’
Those who are redeemed know this
Among them I am also one
And I only tell that truth
I wandered aimlessly
Bore many trials and sufferings
Tough you were near to me
I lived in my own way
I was not less than anybody
Never satisfied however I enjoyed the world
While constantly seeking for the pleasures of the body
There was no time to seek you
Then I become tired and stand still
As there was nothing to do further
Putting the chain in my legs
I jumped in the sea
Not allowing me to drown to die
Jumping behind me
Taking me to the shore and removing the chain
You gave your darshan to me
Then I knew you Oh my Lord
Then alone I realized my true condition
As you redeemed me to get redemption
I worshiped you as the ‘Redeemer’.

BT Song 563
Thankfully our life is not under our control. Though we can do our part sincerely, sometimes we under act or over act, yet beyond our role we cannot do much in it. Though we are disturbed by unwanted events and some sudden twists and turns in our life, there is not much we can do about it. Because other than what we can do on our part, equally other’s role is, again thankfully not under our control. As I was thinking on this subject I wrote this song.
BT Song 563

BT Song 563 His drama
Let it go as long as it goes
He alone doing it everyday
What is there for us to do amidst all these?
Let us watch what He is doing
Does He not have concern?
Don’t you know that He alone is doing it?
Why are you disturbed so much?
How I am going to tell it to you
Can you protect?
Even a single hair not falling
You refuse to understand this
If I tell further, you become upset with me
Let me share in a different way
Then think about it
Even if you become sick for a day
Then think about your condition
Food won’t go inside
Your wealth won’t come to help
Unless He shows some mercy
You can never recover from it
Though relatives and friends will be there
Even if they support you
If you have taken many treatments
Who will give healing, tell me that
I don’t know
How to tell more than this
Even this is also His drama
You don’t understand this
Seek the one who enacts this
‘No more but “you”‘ tell this
Then you will realize
And the peace will return back automatically
This I learnt from my experience
I share only this
Then it is left to you
That’s all I can do now

BT Song 564
As I got up very early in the morning, I was translating Bhakti Song 446 to post in the Svadhyayan. As I was doing the translation, I was smiling within myself as this theme becomes rhetoric in my life. I know, like me, others also become tired of reading such songs often with pessimistic notes about life. As I used to keep a short account with God (small prayers, in between my works, reading, thinking and even when I do cross stitch work), as I was typing, I said to the Lord as prayer in Tamil the very first line of this song as a prayer. Then as the inspiration flowed, stopping the translation of Bhakti Song 446, I wrote this song within five minutes and continued the translation work.
BT Song 564
BT Song 564 Become tired
Even if you ask thousands time
I will repeat the same
If you treat me like this
I will come again and again back to you
Am I the one available to you?
For you to enact your drama
It is enough leave me alone
Don’t display me anymore and stop it
Am I the least one among all?
Am I the only your slave available
Am I become everybody’s choice
Even if I rebuke you, don’t you understand this?
I am not asking you much
I am not lamenting remaining un-obedient
I bowed too much
Show some mercy, I plead
Don’t beat the dead snake
Don’t do further damage
Don’t exhume what is already buried
Don’t pretend as if you don’t understand
How many times can I ask you?
How can I say more than this?
I become tired of writing like this
Therefore, I close this here
Mathigiri, 30-10-16, 4.45 am.
BT Song 565
Another song after reading a song by Surdas. It is important to note how skilfully Surdas connects words appropriate for a dancer and her dress and jewel. Though I tried my best, writing a poem taking the theme from another language is difficult. Though we are inspired by the subject of that song, hunting for the words to communicate in another language is not much easy.
Now I have danced too much, Gopal,
Dressed in anger and lust, and garlanded
With a necklace of passions at the throat.
Girded with ankle bells of sham and delusion—
how sweet their slanderous sound—(p.693)
I am bound at the waist with a sash of illusion,
And the vermillion of greed is daubed on my brow.
Cravings roar inside my body
In a host of differing rhythms, and my mind,
A drum that’s been pasted with the dough of consuion,
Sets my movements to a dissonant pulse,
I’ve marshalled and flaunted so many artful steps
And filled my sinful net:
All this ignorance Surdas has learned—
Take it far away, Nandala.—Sur’s Ocean, eds. Kenneth E Bryant, trs. By John Stratton Hawley, Massachusetts, Murty Classical Library of India, Harvard University Press, song 400, pp. 694-95

BT Song 565

BT Song 565 How much I have danced
Did I perform less dance
All the day I danced wildly
Putting lust and anger as my dress
And putting desire as the ornament
Putting lust and greed as the anklet
Dancing according to their tune
Putting maya as the waist ornament
Shaping the eyebrows with too much greed
Keeping so many other desires within me
Further adding confusion with them
Making many (dancing) steps in my heart
Twisting my body in many ways
I have performed many dances
And accumulated many sins
This fool what else have I done
As my body become tired, I stopped it
Then I come unto you
Cried to save me by showing some mercy.
