BT Songs 646 to 650

BT Song 646

What I say about the Lord is not mere poetic imagination or wishful thinking. This is a reality in a bhaktas life.  She can pour down or vent out her anger with the Lord.  For me prayer is not just to know the will of God.  It is a fellowship where I can share all my thoughts, struggle, views, opinions etc. with Him.  As I often do it, I reflected that reality of prayer in this song.

BT Song 646

BT Song 646 Burden will go

I am groaning for sometime

And share my shortcoming to you

There is no use in standing afar from you due to fear

There is none who can console me

If I keep within me then it will become a burden

If I share with others, then it will become a rumour

If I come and share with you

My burden will automatically go

How much patience you have

And how much you love me

If I cry or become upset, you listen to me

Through that you give me comfort

When I hesitate thinking that

What shall I share with you?

You will make me to share by initiating the conversation

Then when I began to share you will listen silently

I need not see time and your convenience

I need not get an appoint with you

Whenever I think I can come unto you

Can share my thoughts with you

You never get frustrated by my pestering

You never run and hide when I come to you

In fact, you  wait eagerly expecting my arrival

And when I began to groan you will open your heart to listen

Therefore, again I come unto to you

O my Lord, I want to share with you

As usual listen with much patience

And you carry my burden

BT Song 647

After reading the following accounts given by Richard Fox Young about Nilakanth/Nehemiah Goreh (1825-85) I sat for a movement reflecting his struggle and empthasized with him. Because I too go through such crises often in my journey in my bhakti with the Lord.  But after completing this chapter (Richard Fox Young ‘Some Hindu Perspectives on Christian Missionaries in the Indic World of the Mid Nineteenth Century’, in Judith M. Brown and Robert Eric Frykenberg (eds.) Christians, Cultural Interactions, and India’s Religious Traditions, London, Routledge Curzon, 2002, pp. 37-60, pp. 55-56) I began to reflect on what I read in this chapter. Then I wrote this song as my response to such crises in my life:

…As he was an introspective individual, the historian has little access to Nilakanth’s inner agon. His correspondence, however, informs us that his conversion left him with a nagging sense of incompleteness – of being, in his own words, a kaccha (immature), not pakkha (mature), Christian – and that he tried to overcome this disappointment by perpetually seeking that elusive “knock-out” reason for not being a Hindu. That he was relatively unconcerned with demonstrating why he became a Christian seems to me significant. The missionary appeal to reason effected in him was not a capacity for more efficient reasoning but rather for stepping back from Hinduism to a vantage point where its philosophical coherence could be assessed objectively. Why it eventual came about that he saw the darshanas {six schools of thought/philosophy} as fataly flawed on (p.55) rational grounds is beside the point, despite the intrinsic interest of his arguments. What matters is that in becoming aware that it is possible to change one’s mind about life’s fundamentals, there was too much denial of Hinduism and too little affirmation of Christianity, a change in philosophical orientation that left the dispositions of the heart very much the same. To make the point in Christian idiom, Nilakanth’s experience seems to have fallen short of a metanoia that transformed the heart as well as the mind, giving constancy to belief and making it become conviction.—pp. 55-56

BT Song 647

BT Song 647 The Limitation of Intellect

Till this day I never understood

still it is not very clear to me

As I have thousands of questions within me

Till this day I didn’t get answer to all of them

Many kinds of views are in this world

many paths are before me

I cannot accept all of them as correct one

at the same time I cannot reject that none is useful

As you called me for you, I came immediately

then I contemplated what happened to me

The life that I live till this day is for you

is not because of me, this I realized.

I read many books

I analysed  them deeply

Finally I came to a conclusion that

all of them are mere human endeavors

Intellect asks thousands of questions

The heart is longing to find answer to them all

whoever give how much answer

finally the mind refuses to accept them

Finally I found an answer (to this)

that there is a limitation for my intellect

and I accepted it

then I found peace within me

BT Song 648

After reading Matthew 12:45 ff. I began to meditate upon it thinking about my own life related in various areas where my later condition became worse than the former.  As I began to reflect on past several incidents in my life, I wrote this song.  Initial enthusiasm and too much proclamation without having inner conviction will easily erode one’s mere intellectual understanding about anything in spirituality.  This is one area in which reason cannot have the final say.  Simple bhakti and having a child like faith alone save one.

BT Song 648

648 Later conditions

The later condition will become worst

The devil which left will come back

There is no point in having a superficial change

There is not life without having inner change

Due to initial enthusiasm

And due to over zeal

Taking so many quick decisions

There is no use falling at the end

We can say for others to applaud us

We can pretend before others

Not having real inner change

We will end up becoming good for nothing

Though we clean and remove all the dirt

And light a beautiful oil lamp at the centre of the house

Doing many decorations at the doorstep

There is no use living as before

Knowing the will of God

And having a simple bhakti

We should walk in straight and (narrow way)

And we should have clarity in our mind

Though fell, not accepting the defeat

Not wandering in unnecessary paths

We should repent seeking forgiveness

Should feel sorry with a true spirit

Having simplicity like a child

Remaining firm in the conviction

Standing till the end

We should attain God having bhakti within us

BT Song 649

Cross is not only a mystery but also a riddle.  Though we try to give all kinds of explanations to it, a simple rationality won’t accept it.  When the inner burden of sin and failures push, I realize its full meaning and purpose. But when I try to reason it out to understand intellectually, the cross completely fails.  Yes, Cross fails to reveal all about it, because of my rational approach to it.  My intellect may brag about it, but till the end I need to live with this struggle.  Others may say that it is the failure of the intellect and not that of the cross. But I think the cross of the Lord won’t mind accepting such failures before human intellect as its mystery is beyond it.  For me Cross is both a symbol of failure and victory, as God used a worse criminal symbol to demonstrate His Grace.

Though I never clearly understood this yet it is worth quoting Max Warren’s response to Roger Hooker about failure of Muktinath:

Warren: Address III p. 2 par 4. The failure of Jesus. This is a tremendous thought to bring to the Cross.

If we really take the Incarnation seriously then surely we must see that while Jesus was ready for failure he didn’t invite it.  It gave him no joy to be rejected by his own people. He appealed to them most dramatically in the ‘symbols’ of his life and action and speech. He wasn’t play-acting his way to crucifixion.

I’m all the way with you in what you are saying. But I’ve not before seen it put so clearly, which is why I want to do a lot of thinking of ‘Jesus and his failure’. We with hindsight claim the victory was on the Cross. But we sometimes do it, at least I do, far too easily.   A defeated Jesus has something very great to say to me, a so often defeated man! (Letter 389 2 March 1973).— Graham Kings, Christianity Connected: Hindus, Muslims and the World in the Letters of Max Warren and Roger Hooker, New Delhi, 2002, Indian Edition, ISPCK, 2017. pp. 313

BT Song 649 Explanation of Grace

I am an innocent boy

Came to your feet

And I begged you to

Bear with my mistakes

You don’t have the nature

Of not having compassion

Nothing wrong in

Proclaiming this (to the world)

Will you remain?

As a riddle?

Will you reveal yourself?

To those who refused to understand

When one comes

With simplicity

Will you deny it?

Not receiving by your grace

When one despises you

Because of too much intellect

You will destroy that intellect

Only through the same

When the pride

Goes up to the head

You will hide

The knowledge of Truth

It is not easy

For us to know you

There is no definition

For your grace

You came to show it

Only through your compassion

And you gave an explanation to it

By hanging on the cross

When we think that

Why you have done it

Many questions are

Coming in our mind

How many explanations

We might give

This one till remains

As a riddle

BT Song 650

Though we claim that Time has its own inherent power etc., a bhakta of the Lord could never believe in it.  For her there is no protection outside the will of God.  Similarly though God can only work in our lives through human agencies, yet that is also not permanent one.  With whom we work, live and move will be gone within a few seconds away from our life.  Though several times the future remains very bleak, yet for a bhakta the only hope is that, in spite of the reality of time factor and human agencies, her future is safe in God’s hand.

BT Song 650 Didn’t lose hope

I don’t know clearly

What is your will for me?

I cannot understand

Your will properly

I cannot accept that

This is the Lela (play) of Time

Though I search for reasons

Still, I couldn’t find them

Though the situation

Is very perfect

Many indeed are there

To stand support me

Within in few seconds

All will collapse

And what I have planned

Will be gone without direction

You never come

Directly to guide us

Everything never

Go as we wish

At the same time

Things are not going on their own

And my life is not

Outside your will

Still this slave

Never understood it clearly

I don’t have the

Wisdom to know that

there is no alternative

For you to act other than human agencies

But through whom is

Not yet clear to me

I become like a bubble

On the floating water

I have never witnessed

A stable life for me

At the same time, I cannot find

Any other way than that you already set for me

Therefore, I never lost

My hope in you.
