BT Song 666
After my regular Muktivedic reading and from other books I saw the watch. Still I had more than 20 minutes before I went to prepare something for my mother to eat. But I was not in a mood to read further or even to write. At the same time I have to kill the next 20 minutes. Then I sat quietly not knowing what to do. I don’t want to do anything but my nature never allowed for it. Then I began to think about various things. That time the one thought that came to me was that why God gave this mind or heart (man in Hindi and manam in Tamil) even to think. Unlike animals which need not think in life other than to meet their physical needs, we humans alone need more than beyond our physical needs. In fact we work more to cater to the mental and spiritual needs than for the physical one. But why did God set this trap in us? How my life would be blissful if I didn’t have a mind (man or manam) to think about all these things. Even spending just 20 minutes becomes an issue because of the need of my mind. As I began to think about it, I wrote this song questioning God why He set such a trap only to us not to the animals? But who knows what kind of trap they got as they cannot communicate it to us. Maybe they might be thinking the same?

In order to feed the need of the mind
Creating so many new things
We struggle a lot unable to find means to escape

So that we will become tired by struggling a lot
Though you made us a superior creation
We are unable to live with that superiority?
There is only one means for this

As I was reading a commentary on Matthew by Tom Wright (Matthew for Everyone, ISPCK, Delhi, 2015) where the author has skillfully presented the way the Lord confronted His opponents at the same time handled His own disciples and common people, I saw the Leadership quality. No one can create such an imaginary character just for the sake of showing the Leadership qualities in a person. Particularly the way the events were recorded by the author(s) of the Gospel never intended to high light some qualities and character of the Lord. But when I read all the encounters that the Lord had with various groups and the way He handled them all, I saw a different kind of Leader in Him. So after writing the commentary on Matthew 21. 23-32, in conclusion Wright wrote:
But for the moment we should ponder not only Jesus’ extraordinary and unique action, but the ways in which a similar revolution may sometimes be necessary in today’s world. Which institutions in your country have become corrupt, so that they now serve the opposite purpose from that for which they were set up? Where do you see systems which were supposed to enable people to worship and pray, but which have now turned themselves in the opposite direction to the message of Jesus? What can you do about it?
I wrote, ‘Practically NOTHING, unless we are ready to face the consequence as the Lord faced’.
After writing this I closed the book and began to do other works. But the same thought continued to echo in my mind. Then I began to see all the Leadership qualities of the Lord in which finally He was ready to pay the cost for it. As I began to reflect one by one the way He demonstrated His Leadership qualities I wrote this song.

எதிர்த்துப் போராட தெம்பு வேண்டும்
ஏனென்று கேட்கும் எண்ணம் வேண்டும்

BT Song 667 Leadership
One needs strength to oppose
And should have the courage to question
If remains indifferent by thinking ‘what I am going to gain’
At the end it will become useless to anyone
All those who claim that they serve for a common cause
Never do it without having a selfish motive.
Those who toil keeping only other’s interest
Is never respected by anyone
Unwilling to pay a price
There is no use in involving in public cause
If one launches without having inner courage, but depends only physical strength
He cannot sustain till the end.
Clarity in thought, clear goal
Firm faith, clear in communication
Ready to accept defeat
And taking others along with who are ready to come
Without having these qualifications if someone enters in public life
Then their life will become a mistake
And those who follow such person
Will end up giving their life as the cost for it
It is not easy to accept leadership
When one does not have Leadership quality
It is not equally easy to remain a follower
When one does not know how to discern a good leader (to follow)

As I sat for my quiet time, suddenly I began to reflect on all those specific incidents in which the hidden hands of God directed my life, even against my desire and longing. For this several times He has to go against my personal ambition which made me get irritated with Him. But when I looked back after several years, the way He saved my life from so many snares even going against my desire made me see the way He protected me as the apple of the eye. As I continued to reflect several other such incidents I wrote this song thanking Him for His grace which alone sustains me till now.

After writing the previous poem (669) I began to pray. But no words came in my mind but began to think again about the grace of God which sustained me by saving me from so many snares in life. Then stopping my prayer, I wrote this song and read it as my prayer and went to bed. In the last stanza when I talk about taking birth as human, I don’t refer to the theory of karma samsara with repeated births, but even the way God created me as a human being. While writing poems one cannot avoid using certain words and terms which might have different theological/philosophical connotations as she comes from that tradition. But it need not reflect the present understanding of her faith/bhakti or theology. Poem gives such freedom to use familiar words and terms from one’s own (religious) worldview giving new kinds of interpretation. Of course this is not that easy to talk about here.

உன்மீது என்பாராம் வைத்துவிட்டேன்
உன்னடி மட்டும் பற்றி விட்டேன்
உன்னருள் தன்னையும் பெற்றுவிட்டேன்

I gave up the thought that why I even had this birth
