BT Song 941

Man is a social being and needs other human beings not only for fellowship but even to survive as a human. No man is an island, and our very identity depends on our interaction with others. I strongly believe in this. At the same time, the desire to live a reclusive life with minimal contact with the outside world has been present in me since my teenage years. I can live, and have lived, for several months with minimal contact with the outside world. Modern electronic gadgets now provide contact with the outside world (and also disturb us). But even when these facilities were not available, I lived a reclusive life for several months. I know that this too is a gift from God, and many cannot live like this. Of course, when we (or I) have all that we need to live a comfortable life, I can talk about such a life very easily and even take it for granted. But this longing and the life I prefer never brings me any depression. On the contrary, I always enjoy it very much. However, to have such a life, we need some disciplines that we must cultivate regularly. In the end, I still cannot understand or communicate why this desire is there. The only response I can give is silence.

BT Song 941: Language of Silence

You beckoned me to dwell in silence’s embrace,

Granting solitude as my dwelling place.

With grace, you adorned this silent expanse,

Prompting praise through contemplative trance.

Your will, a mystery beyond the grasp,

Worldly minds falter, understanding laps.

Yet, at your feet, in humble surrender,

Your essence whispers, silent and tender.

Let tumult cease, ego’s fervor wane,

Even intellect bows, your grace to gain.

Until your voice breaks silence’s serene,

Peace reigns within, a tranquil scene.

In moments severed from the worldly tide,

Inward, with you, my senses coincide.

Through silence, my heart finds its refrain,

In your peace, I find my domain.

Yet, submerged in tranquil depths profound,

Mind and heart in stillness bound.

Emerging, speech falters, words evade,

Silence alone conveys the peace portrayed.

BT Song 942

Reading the Word of God regularly, spending some time alone with Him, and singing His praises (which I do by writing poems) are a few practices in this life where one can experience the very presence of God. It is not the quantity of the time but the quality that brings such bliss.

942 – “Try to Think”

Oh my heart

Try to think

All the blessings

That the Lord has done for you

You praise

Him for some time

Then you will understand

The sweetness in it

Read his Veda

You will get

Guidance

To live a noble life

Worship him

Each day

You will receive

His abode at his feet

Tell his

Name each day

When see that

Your body and mind will melt

You call him

Each day

Then you will realize

His compassion

You sing him

With bhakti

Immediately you will

Receive mukti.

BT Song 943

Another song of praising the Lord as my past, present, and future are in Him.

943 – “I Want to Praise You”

A kind of fullness in my heart

Is calling me to sing your praises

Seeing the greatness of your nobleness

It makes me cling to your feet

You are leading everyday life beautifully

You show your grace in it

Thinking the needs of both the body and mind

You provide everything not missing anyone

Though many troubles come in between

And my heart is stumbled in them

Knowing what is my requirement

You fulfill them in proper means

Though the everyday life goes in one way

And the next day worries come on their own

Though I was anxious about the future too

You show that all of them are in you

Like this, I clearly see that

The limits of all my life are within you

I long only to sing your praises

Only thinking about it

BT Song 944

See article: Local versus Universal.

944 – “No Religion”

You came seeking me

And redeemed me knowing me

You became god

In my unclear mind

I never came with clear understanding

I never worshiped you after understanding

You became my guru whom I was seeking

Therefore I walked after you

As I came like a

Crawling baby

You brought me

Like a mother with care

As I came begging

Longing to learn

Becoming my teacher

You taught me with compassion

Becoming my guru

You brought me like a mother

Becoming my teacher

You taught me everything

You never had

Any expectation from me

You never asked any

Honorarium from me

Therefore I never

Left your feet

I become a slave

And never went elsewhere

Doing small errands

By living at the

Shadow of your feet

I will reach you

You never came

Within the boundary of religion

You never forsook the

Temple of the heart

As you live

In the temple of my heart

There is no place for

Religious ritual there

BT Song 945

As I was reading a commentary on Psalms 51, so many points in the commentary of this Psalm impressed me, and particularly when I read, “True repentance is not a dead knowledge of sin committed, but a living, never-at-rest, painful consciousness of it” (Isa. 59:12, see also Pss. 32:4; 40:12) (Bruce K. Waltke and James M. Houston with Erika Moore, The Psalms as Christian Worship: A Historical Commentary, Cambridge, U.K.: William B

Inspired me very much after completing the reading as I began to reflect so many points about penitential devotion, I wrote this song.

Some more points worth reading from this Psalm:

… “compunction” or compunctio cordis (“uneasiness of guilt or remorse of the heart”) …leads to the healing and bright sorrow of one’s inner, personal sinful status, without which Christianity is merely a formal religion. Originally a medical term for the wound caused by the prick of a thorn or other sharp object, it is expressed metaphorically in Acts 2:37.  Luke recounts that when the Jews responded to Peter’s charge that as “fellow Israelites” they had crucified “this Jesus whom God has made both Lord and Messiah” (v. 36), “they were pricked [Greek lexeme, katanussomai] to the heart.”….—ibid, p. 450

John Climacus (c. 579-649) treats repentance (metanoia) and compunction {“uneasiness of guilt or remorse of the heart”} separately, in two different chapters. {John Climacus, The Ladder to Divine Ascent, trans. Colm Luibheid and Norman Russel (New York: Paulist Press, 1982)}.  Compunction has become equivalent to the permanent attitude of “the fear of the Lord” – so the godly Israelite would express it – while repentance in association with baptism may be interpreted as a once-for-all event….—ibid. p. 451

… “Transgression” (pesa‘), “a willful, knowledgeable violation of a norm or standard” (ABD 6:32), is a willful breach of trust; “the disruption of an alliance through violation of covenant.” {Eugene Carpenter and Michael A. Grisanti, NIDOTTE, 3:707, s.v. pesa‘.}  Picture it as a raised fist against God’s standard.  Iniquity” (‘awon), the most holistic term, encompasses both religious and/or ethical crimes and the resulting guilt. Picture it as twisting or bending something straight, or of diverging/deviating from a standard.  “Sin (hatta) means “miss (mark),” “fall short,” “a disqualifying error,” {M. Saebo, TLOT, 1:406-8, s.v. ht’}, a disqualifying offense “against someone with whom one stands in an institutionalized community relationship.” {K. Koch, TDOT, 4:311}.  Since one’s relationships to God and to his community are inseparable (cf. Prov. 3:27-35), sin is ultimately against God and his word.  Picture it as jumping up to reach a bar and being disqualified for failing short of it.

…He {David} matches the triad of terms for sins with a triad of (p.468) terms for grace (cf. Exod. 34:6) “Be gracious to me” (honneni, “bestow a favor that cannot be claimed,” see Ps. 4:1[2]), “according to your loving kindness” (kehasdeka, “help for the helpless,” see Ps. 23:6), “according to your abundant mercy” (kerob rahameyka).  “Mercy” denotes the tender yearnings, affections, and love by a superior for a helpless inferior rooted in a “natural” bond by God’s common grace, as a mother for her child, or special grace, as the Father for the child he begat through the Holy Spirit….—ibid. pp. 468-69

945 – “Not Qualified”

I am not qualified

To come near to you

There is no chance

For me to get comfort

I don’t know what

My conceit heart is doing

Oh my God, I don’t know

The way to overcome it

It seeks

Only evil

I rejoice

Only in doing evil

Truthfulness has

Gone from my life

Only emptiness

Remains

Selfishness alone

Becomes my ideology

I only trust

My ego for that

I never think of the

Welfare of others

I completely give up

Common good for all

Even my tongue feels shy

To count all my

Evil nature

What can I do more

I cannot find means

To be emancipated

By removing the

This my burden

Though you redeemed me

By removing my sin

What is the means

To remove this burden

Give some answer

To this sinner

Who is afraid

To come near to you

Give me back

The broken heart

And penitent spirit

Again to me

By keeping your Spirit

Within me

Prevent me from

Doing any more mistakes

BT Song 941: Language of Silence

You called me to live in silence,

Only for that, you gave me solitude.

You added your grace along with it,

You made me praise you by thinking of that.

Your will is very strange,

Neither the world nor the mind can understand it.

When I come and bow at your feet,

You make me understand it by remaining within me.

All the uproar should calm down,

The ego also perishes along with it.

Even the buddhi should bow down,

Your grace should be along with it.

Till you come and talk,

There should be peace in the heart.

That peace fills the mind,

I should listen to your voice in it.

Forgetting the world for some time,

Mingling with you in my inner feeling,

Adding my five senses along with it,

My heart will know to dwell in your peace.

When I drown in that peace,

Both my mind and heart won’t experience it.

When I come out of it,

Not any language but silence alone can communicate it.

BT Song 941

BT Song 945
