BT Song 981

My reading about any dialogue, either involved or arranged, only raises further questions about the need for such dialogue. It is one thing to have a real dialogue on other issues, but we need to remain silent about God. As our Indian tradition insists, when it comes to any question about God, it is better to remain silent, as it is beyond our comprehension. We cannot understand God, nor can we even ask any questions about Her.

After one such reflection, when I retired to bed, before entering the mosquito net, I said to God, “I have one question for You, and You had better give me an answer.” As the thoughts continued to flow with inspiration, I returned to my chair, wrote this song within a few minutes, and then went to bed without further questions for God.

These passages (Br.Up.IV.5.15; III.9.26=IV.4.22 and IV.5.15; III.8.8; IV.4.19; Chaan.Up.VII.24.1; Sv.Up.VI.19; Katha Up.IV.10-11) emphasize that it is impossible to describe what Brahman is and that we can only say what it is not. Sankaracarya, in V.S.III.2.17, refers to the dialogue of Baskali and Badhva, who declared the characteristic of Brahman by his silence. Baskali said, “Sir, tell me about Brahman”; then Badhva remained silent. When Baskali asked a second and a third time, Badhva replied, “We have been telling you indeed, but you don’t understand; this self is still (without any activity).” J. Royce, in “The World and the Individual,” vol.I.p.148, echoes this episode of Baskali and Badhva: “Believe not those prattlers,” says one often quoted mystical work, “who boast that they know God. Who knows Him is silent.” —P.V. Kane, History of Dharmasastra, Pune, Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute, vol. V, part II, p.1505.

BT Song 981: God’s Answer

I need to ask

A question of you,

I need your response,

Please give it true.

Why so much division?

Why this divide?

What have you gained

With walls so wide?

If you are the

One true God,

Why have people

Forgotten you, Lord?

If you dwell within,

Ruling their heart,

Why do they

Fail to see your part?

I need an answer,

And I need it fast.

Respond to me,

Please, at last!

“This question is

Not new to me.

You’re not the first

With this plea.

Yet, I’ve not answered,

There’s no need,

You know why,

I’ll repeat my creed.

Ask your own

Conscience true,

You must answer

What it asks of you.

If questions linger,

Come to me with grace,

Find the courage,

Seek my face.”

I have no answer,

To God’s query,

As my conscience mocks,

I feel more weary.

Then I stopped

Asking more,

And in silence,

Found my core.

BT Song 981: God’s Answer

I need to ask

One question to you

I need your

Answer for that

Why have you kept

So much division?

What have you

Achieved by it?

If you are the

Only one God,

Why have the people of this world

Forgotten you?

If you were ruling them

By dwelling from within,

Why do they fail to

Recognize you?

I need an immediate

Answer to this question.

You should respond

Immediately!

“This is not at all

A new question.

You didn’t ask

It for the first time.

But I didn’t give

My answer to it.

There is no

Need for it.

You know the

Reason for that.

I can only

Repeat it again.

You ask your own

Conscience.

You better give the answer

To its question.

If you have

Further questions,

Then you ask

Taking courage to me.”

I don’t have

Any answer

To this question

Of God.

As my conscience

Began to laugh at me,

My condition became

More wretched than before.

Then, giving up

Asking further questions,

I remained

A silent person.

Mathigiri, 1-10-2018, 11:45 p.m.

BT Song 982: Impossible to Utter

This is not

A simple task.

All cannot be

Communicated through words.

There is no language

To communicate

A noble thing

That goes within us.

All the messages

That we try to share through language

Are nothing but

The tasks that we give to our brain.

Anything that

We proclaim, making it as the base,

Is nothing but

A half-baked message.

Any idea that we

Put forth only based on it

Will disappear

In the course of time.

The one thing that

We understand through silence

Will remain firmly

By dwelling in our hearts.

When we long

To know that,

His grace will come

And inform it to the atman.

The atman which

Understands it

Will attain peace

By reaching his feet.

Then transcending the

Limitation of language,

Unable to communicate,

It will remain silent.

BT Song 983

After writing the secular poem 487, I took the same theme and, reflecting on my bhakti, wrote this song. Though one withstands the pressures of life by various means, through her strength and the support of others, the hope of a bhakta is the presence of the Lord in all such situations.

BT Song 983: I Will Walk Behind You

Even lost, you find me,

Carry me on your shoulder,

When I stand confused,

You guide me with a smoulder.

When tiredness comes,

You help me understand,

Providing comfort,

Reviving me with your hand.

In confusion and trouble,

Thinking “What’s next?”

You comfort me, saying,

“I am here, don’t be perplexed.”

When fear overcomes,

Defeating my mind,

You remove the fear,

Refuge and solace I find.

Seeing human life’s condition,

When I blame you in strife,

You show its nobility,

Its precious gift of life.

Realizing your grace,

Which gave me this birth,

I’ll walk behind you,

Knowing my worth.

Mathigiri, 3-10-2018, 11:30 p.m.

BT Song 983: I Will Walk Behind You

Even if I get lost, you will come searching for me.

You will redeem me by putting me on your shoulder.

When I stand bewildered and lost,

You will come to show the direction.

When tiredness and laziness come,

You will help me to understand it.

Giving further comforts and facilities,

You will stand with me to revive me.

When I get confused and troubled,

Thinking, “What next?”

‘I am here, more than that,’

By saying this, you will comfort me.

When unfathomable fear comes

And defeats my mind along with buddhi,

Removing the fear by giving refuge,

You will give your shoulder, encouraging me.

Seeing the condition of human life,

When I blame you, thinking

Taking birth as a human is wrong,

You will help me understand its nobleness.

Then, realizing your grace

Which gave this human life to me,

By removing the tiredness, laziness, and fear,

I will walk behind you each day.

BT Song 984

Neither do I have the ability nor any quality to come to the Lord or to worship Him. When I reach the feet of the Lord, only two things come to my mind: His grace and my wretchedness. But as I know the secret of bhakti, which is total surrender without any reservation, though I don’t have any inherent ability or quality, this attitude of surrender becomes the qualification for the Lord to accept me as I am. And when I think about it, nothing but praise comes to mind.

BT Song 984: I Will Praise You Like This

I will sing to you,

Who bestows blessings,

My heart sings your praises,

Grateful offerings.

I should live in you,

Seeking your feet daily,

My heart tastes joy,

Repeating it gaily.

In sharing, with tears,

Words fail me,

I come to you,

Speechlessly.

Seeing your grace,

Each day anew,

Thinking of you,

Who’s so true,

My spirit sings,

Praising in song,

I give myself to you,

Where I belong.

You uphold me,

More than I gave,

Your love shows,

Day by day.

Though unworthy,

You accept me,

Your nobility,

Sings my heart free.

This is enough,

I celebrate,

I’ll always praise you,

In this state.

Mathigiri, 4-10-2018, 11:50 p.m.

BT Song 984: I Will Praise You Like This

I should sing to you,

Who gives blessings.

My heart should sing your praises

With gratitude.

I should live

By dwelling in you.

I should seek your feet

Each day for that.

My heart tastes it

As I tell it again and again.

It inspires me to

Say it more each day.

When I share,

As tears are coming,

I will come to you

Without any words to share it.

When I see your grace

In everyday life,

When I think of you

Who gives it to me,

When my spirit

Praises you by singing songs,

I give myself completely

Into your hands.

You are upholding me,

Which I gave to you.

As I gave myself to you,

You show your love more and more.

Though I don’t have

The qualification to give myself to you,

You accept my giving

As the qualification.

When I think of this,

Your nobleness,

My heart sings,

Thinking of your grace.

This is enough, this is enough.

As I celebrate it like this,

I will always praise you

By singing like this.

BT Song 985

Whenever I read any book on theology or missiology with various kinds of discussions, unable to understand the language (apart from English and several technical terms), I feel overwhelmed. Though I agree with the authors, several of their views and presentations compel me to respond, which I find difficult due to my limitations in language, causing frustration. After reflecting on some points and recording them, I thought I should take a break from reading, as I continue to read without any gap. When I complete one book, I immediately take another book to read. So, as I sat for my meditation and prayer, I said to the Lord that I should stop both reading and writing and take a break. Then, as the inspiration came, I wrote this song as my prayer today.

BT Song 985: There Is No Explanation

I should be quiet,

Silent and still,

No reading, no writing,

At your feet, my will.

They write much,

Share what they know,

But you transcend,

Beyond what they show.

Only those who see

Their flaws, seek you,

Realizing themselves,

They see you too.

Those who know,

You transcend,

Understand you

In the end.

If we search in vain,

You vanish from sight,

Proclaiming it’s impossible,

You dwell in the heart’s light.

You teach within,

Making it plain,

Simple devotion,

Brings redemption again.

In silence, I walk,

In your path,

Knowing there’s no language,

To explain your wrath.

Mathigiri, 5-10-2018, 11:30 p.m.

BT Song 985: There Is No Explanation

I should keep quiet, not talking anything.

I should give up both reading and writing.

Both my mind and thoughts should stand still.

I should come in silence to your feet.

They give so much in writing.

They try to tell as much as they understand.

But when you stand transcending all these,

It is not within my reach to know you.

Only those who know their shortcomings alone search for you.

Those who understand them will realize you.

Those who realize that you came transcending your (divine) nature

Alone will understand you.

If we search for you where you are not,

Then you will disappear, who lives forever.

When we proclaim that it is no more possible,

You will come and dwell in our hearts.

You, who teaches by coming within us,

Made it simple to realize you.

When we do simple bhakti,

You redeem me again by overshadowing me.

Once I receive that redemption,

I should walk in your path in silence.

I should understand that there is no language

To give thousands of explanations to that.

BT Song 981:
