The Numbers Game in Parliamentary Democracy

In parliamentary democracy, forming a government is only a numbers game. And in this, a coalition government is only a marriage of ‘convenience’ and not ‘conviction’. Naturally, in such a marriage of convenience, expecting a divorce at any time, both partners have to always play a ‘Hide’ and ‘Seek’ game to survive. Those parties that joined the coalition with a lesser number are more vulnerable. Because if they decide to desert the marriage, there is every possibility of losing some of their numbers favoring to remain within the coalition government, even to jump ship. This often happens. Even the opposition party, licking its wounds, knows this. Because if they make any attempt to bring down the ruling government, then there is every chance for them to lose some of their horses to be traded and bought by the ruling coalition to its cavalry as back side support. In the numbers game, horse trading is an integral part. So the junior coalition parties, rather than losing their numbers, are now have to content to extract more special status for their region than doing any mischief in the marriage of convenience. And both Naidu and Nitish know this very well.

Opposition Tactics and Government Response

So the opposition will try to embarrass the government by disturbing the Parliament session by going to the Well and creating all kinds of hurdles. When force is used to evict them to bring order and run the Parliament by the Speaker, then they will make a huge cry outside the Parliament by sitting a traditional dharna in front of Gandhiji’s statue, whereas they crucified Gandhism while he was alive and buried him after his death, claiming that the voice of the opposition is throttled and democracy is in danger. Now the whole nation should join together to oppose such a Fascist government to safeguard ‘Democracy and Constitution’. As running the Parliament smoothly is the dharma of the ruling party, after trying to negotiate by calling an All-Party meeting before the Parliament Session seeking their help and cooperation only in keeping the interest of the people [a regular political ritual with no effect], when it fails, it has to use its right to maintain law and order inside the Parliament in the name of upholding the Sanctity of the Temple of Democracy.

Comparing BJP and Congress Opposition Strategies

Unlike BJP, which even, rare exception, played a ‘constructive’ opposition while it was in opposition [see Vajpayee’s legacy], the Congress never learned this art of ‘constructive’ opposition as it always lived with the assumption that they alone were mandated by the people and chosen by the God of Democracy to govern India. Of course, I cannot say this for sure in future when BJP might be forced to sit in opposition.  @@@Because such Stalwalts of Indian Politics like Moraji, Vajipaiji is now absent.  Now after tasted power for three terms the BJP might also behave the Congress in future.  After all they more can claim that they are a Paty with a Difference anymore.@@@

Parliamentary Drama and Public Perception

So when the Parliament session commences, we can expect a ‘Comedy Tragedy Horror Action Thriller Movie’ for our entertainment. Even a film director cannot produce a film with such a cocktail all in one movie.

Reaction to Modi 3.0

Meanwhile, those who cannot digest the Modi 3.0, licking their wounds, have to console themselves by forwarding such messages that ‘Modi and Amit Shah were shocked to receive ‘The Central Intelligence Agency’ report: After Requesting Official Information of Election Results. It is difficult for them to recover from this shock’.@

Actually, neither Shah nor Modi is shocked as they are immune to so many political shocks in their long careers. Only after their shock, unable to digest the Modi 3.0, all the pseudo Secularists, have now consoled themselves by superimposing their shock on Modi—Shah by forwarding such propaganda.  Well this also serves as an Entertainment for many of us.

Political Landscape Post-2019

After two earthquakes in 2014 and 2019, now Modi-Shah only managed to create ONLY a tremor for the opposition to recover and survive. So there are no chances for any kind of such political earthquakes in the near future in Indian politics. Of course, there will be constant tremors moving the ground for some time. But soon it will settle down and carry on its own business as India, for some strange reasons, managed to survive on every front in spite of so many attacks on its Civilization both from within and out. And this is one unique feature of India and there is no parallel to this anywhere in the world.

Future Political Drama

So wait for more Comedy Tragedy Horror Action Thriller Movies in Parliament and outside and such forwarded messages and so many political satire messages [like this].

The Political Dilemma: Opposition vs. Fascism

At this point, if you do not oppose Modi, you are not merely a secularist or centrist but are outright labeled a fascist or even a Sangi. Conversely, if you speak against Modi, you are not merely a pseudo-secularist or centrist but are labeled outright anti-national or even a traitor. It seems there is no room for any third voice in Indian politics now.

Remaining a Centrist is NOT an option for many, as a Centrist wants to be critical of everything, doesn’t want to give even issue-based support to anyone. It’s like sitting on the wall, waiting to jump to one side. They can be called opportunists, worse than far right or far left. But even the so-called Centrists don’t know that there are two camps among them: ‘Far Right Centrists and Far Left Centrists’. So remaining a Centrist means illusion and fractured without having any one identity. They will always remain Jack of all trades.

Appindex

Parliamentary democracy is akin to a game of Musical Chairs. At the end of the day, only one can occupy the chair and claim the prize. As the Hindi saying goes: “Jo jita hai wahi Sikandar” (Whoever wins is victorious). Any foul play will expose the referee (Election Commission). Now, the Opposition cannot blame EVM.

Above all, the Opposition knows well that horse-trading is easier for the ruling party, as members ready for sale understand that switching sides to the ruling party is like a safe investment, assuring guaranteed income—similar to Fixed Deposits in a bank. On the other hand, aligning with the Opposition, missing the opportunity, is akin to investing in the stock market, with no guarantee of dividends and the risk of sudden upheavals ending in bloodbath. Just as Rishi Sunak shocked his own critics in the Torry party by abruptly dissolving Parliament and calling for fresh elections ahead of schedule, the ruling party can exercise similar maneuvers in any democracy. The opposition, with its coalition of numerous parties akin to a mixed dish, finds it challenging to form a stable government. Rishi is confident that Torry will lose, so why miss the chance to settle scores with his critics within the party and secure his position, even as an opposition leader? Perhaps he learned some political lessons from Modi during their previous meetings. Modi, aiming to settle colonial legacies and personal vendettas, may have suggested this strategy to Rishi, especially considering he was blacklisted after the post-Godhra incidents. Although Rishi now demonstrates a British attitude and approach, his Indian roots guide his political acumen. After all, this is the land of Chanakya, where even the British and Torries have learned a tough lesson not to underestimate NRIs. If this is the reality for NRIs, one can only imagine the impact on real Indians with the blood and brains of Chanakya in Indian democracy.
