As I triumphantly closed the third revised edition of Understanding Hinduism, I decided to reward myself with a tiny victory feast: Millet (cooki-cum-cake), my self-conferred honorary pastry. I set out to bake a cookie and, true to scholarly improvisation, produced a soft, delectable Ragi cake instead — the culinary equivalent of writing a new chapter when you only meant to correct a typo.
I ignored traditional recipes and followed my own culinary intuition, armed with everyday suspects: Ragi-wheat flour, nuts, oil, and that noble pinch of soda (the baking kind, not the fizzy philosopher’s drink). For sweetness I used forest honey — the artisanal variety that requires living near actual trees, not in the concrete jungle where “honey” comes pre-labeled and suspiciously supermarket-synthetic.
Naturally I reserved two pieces for the guest arriving tomorrow. That’s my academic generosity: generous in theory, suspiciously protective in practice.
