How They Managed to Write So Many Poems

Given the vastness of many religious texts, one might wonder how Indians, particularly Hindus, managed to produce such an extensive body of poetic work. Prof. M. Vaithiyalingam recently noted on Makkal TV’s ‘Panpaaduvom’ that, even in recent times, many Tamil poets wrote over 50,000 poems. I am equally amazed by the sheer volume of work attributed to individual authors. It is claimed that Saint Thyagaraja composed more than 30,000 songs in Telugu, and Annamacharya wrote over 35,000 poems.

As I began reading the Tiruvasam, I randomly selected poems by Tirunavukkarasar, who is one of my favorite Saiva saints, next to Manikkavasagar. Although I have read various Tamil scriptures, including the Kambaramayanam, Tiruvasagam, Divyaprabandam, Sangam poems, Arutpa, Periyapuranam, Tirumandiram, and Siddarkovai, completing the Tevaram has long been my ambition. When I started reading the ten poems by Tirunavukkarasar about the deity at Thiruppalaitturai, I began to understand how so many poems were produced.

While the format of these poems is similar to that found in other Tamil texts, such as the Divyaprabandam, I had not previously noticed this due to my focus on the subject matter of the poems. In all ten poems, I found only one line particularly interesting and useful. The rest were largely repetitive, recounting stories from the Puranas, describing the landscape, or detailing the deity’s ornaments.

This is not to say that every poem in every text is alike. Many contain beautiful thoughts, doctrines, teachings, and expressions of bhakti, as often found in the Tiruvasagam. However, considering the style of writing in ancient times, it is clear that a gifted poet could easily produce thousands of poems. For those interested in reading in English, good translations can be easily found online. With the rise of social media, many platforms now allow individuals to share their thoughts, including numerous Facebook groups dedicated exclusively to posting poems on various topics. While I cannot speak for other languages, I can say from my limited knowledge that Tamil has a remarkably rich collection of poems compared to any other language in the world. This observation is based on the sheer volume of Tamil poetry, not merely because it is my mother tongue. Below, I provide translations of the ten Tamil poems about Thiruppalaitturai by Appa:
