India Voted: Operation Successful but Patient Died
When our ashram helper arrived, I told her in the presence of Umapathy, our village head, to come in the afternoon and make sweets to celebrate the victory of Indian democracy if the BJP got a single majority. Otherwise, she should not come. Surprised by this, Umapathy asked, “Why? You are not a member of the BJP and always said that you give only issue-based support. But now you want to celebrate the BJP’s victory?” Obviously, our helper did not come.
I said to Umapathy, “A successful democracy needs two things: a strong opposition and a stable government. But I will never support dynastic politics. That is a curse for every democracy. I hope that in the near future, India will move beyond this as the older generation, who still hold some sentimental attachment to a family, passes away. The younger generation does not have that kind of sentimental attachment, so real democracy will eventually succeed in India. Until then, we have to tolerate this dynastic politics both at the central and regional levels. Be it Congress or BJP, there should be a single-party majority government at both the central and state levels. I will support whichever party can provide that kind of government. As Congress still depends on one family for its survival and always needs crutches in the form of regional politics, I support the BJP. Unless a third national-level alternative emerges, I will support the party that can provide a stable government—be it BJP or Congress minus the Sonia family.”
But this result showed that, although democracy as usual won, no single party can celebrate a victory. Of course, the INDIA alliance, particularly Congress, can console themselves that they have done better than before, and the NDA can console themselves that they have returned to power.
However, as there won’t be a single majority government, there won’t be a stable government. This is not good for any democracy. Be it Congress or BJP, there should be a single majority government to provide good governance. Otherwise, succumbing to the ‘coalition dharma,’ the ruling party has to compromise a lot to accommodate the supporting party. As they have to depend on regional parties, these will try to blackmail the central government to get more for their states at the cost of the overall growth of the nation. This happened in the past and will definitely happen in the future. Of course, Amit Shah, as per his dharma, might manage to poach a few MPs from other parties to give a single party majority to the BJP. But this will affect its future as this kind of ‘divide and rule’ always fails, as clearly demonstrated in the Maharashtra results. But as Shah cannot give up his dharma or political business, this will soon happen.
Finally, the defeat of Smriti Irani in Amethi by a low-key Congress party worker again clearly showed that the BJP can never claim it is a party with a difference. As every political party has to face local group politics within their own party, Irani was not defeated by Congress but by her own local MLA and other party leaders who could not see eye to eye with her. In the end, though Congress can celebrate its victory of Rahul in Raebareli and Congress in Amethi, it is still a defeat for democracy as dynastic politics still has its place in Indian politics. Of course, older generation people, particularly women, always maintain a sentimental attachment to their local leaders. As the Gandhi family remains their uncrowned kings, that sentiment worked again along with group politics in the BJP. Anyhow, both Congress and BJP should learn that if you field a candidate who is locally rooted and well connected, there is every chance for them to win. But the BJP, like Congress, failed again by fielding several undeserving candidates, depending on the Magic Wand of Modi. Unless political parties maintain strong cadre-based support, no matter how influential the top leader is, they cannot thrive for long. At the same time, we should keep one thing in mind. The BJP is only a political face to the Sangh Parivar. Particularly, the RSS, with clear ideology and principles, always works at the grassroots level and won’t mind any temporary setbacks in its aim. It has faced several such challenges and is well-trained for that. But no single political party has learned from it, including the BJP. It is capable of creating more Modis if one Modi is removed from power politics. But if the first family is removed, Congress will be severely crippled, unable to recover and catch up not only at the national level but also at the regional level. Of course, in a federal democracy like India, it is good that regional aspirations are represented by their own local parties and governments. But at the national level, a strong national party with a single majority forming the government is much more important for balanced growth across all regions and to handle foreign policy, which now even influences our local level.
So people voted not for BJP or NDA but for a strong opposition. This is a good sign and a victory for our democracy. But without a single majority government, democracy alone will end up paying the price. So there is nothing for any party to celebrate in this election result. Of course, Didi (Mamata Banerjee, the CM of West Bengal) can rejoice in her success. But as her party also falls under the same dynastic politics, though her success is good for her region, it is not something for the nation to celebrate, particularly at the cost of Congress, which was cannibalized by its own breakaway regional groups like Mamata, Jaganmohan, etc. Anyhow, the operation was successful, but the patient died. But as usual, Indian democracy can celebrate its success once more.
To end on a lighter note:
Though Rahul increased the pressure and sugar levels of BJP leaders, by stopping them from getting a single absolute majority, he prevented an increase in my own sugar level. I couldn’t make sweets to celebrate the victory of democracy, as no party managed to get a single absolute majority. Maybe in the future, he can increase my sugar by making me eat sweets if he manages to bring an end to dynastic politics in his own party first. Then I will celebrate by making sweets and enjoying them. I won’t mind a temporary increase in my blood sugar if it can bring a permanent cure to our politics in India. I’ve already come forward to offer the title ‘Son of the Nation’ (like ‘Father of the Nation’ for Mahatma Gandhi) if he ever does it. Though democracy managed to win, there is a temporary setback, paving the way for coalition dharma to bring many impediments to the government. More about this later.
