Social media often offers only a “kabadi kabadi” fellowship—a fleeting engagement where people touch base momentarily and retreat to their comfort zones without meaningful interaction. Many users laugh at videos or messages alongside those who aren’t laughing with them in real life and shed tears for individuals who wouldn’t reciprocate their emotions. I’ve noticed that most people, including the elderly, scroll through their phones at lightning speed, rarely spending more than 30 seconds on a single post or video. For many, it’s less about learning or engaging and more about killing time.
The situation is even worse in group messaging. In most groups, only a few members sporadically engage in discussions, often without any continuity. Someone might raise a question or share a message, and one or two people might respond—typically with emojis rather than words. Before long, an entirely new topic arises, with the cycle repeating. This fragmented engagement often leaves us wondering what the other group members are even doing—many don’t bother to read the messages.
It’s akin to watching a sports match on TV or a mobile device: some viewers only tune in when there’s a commotion, ignoring the rest of the game while they focus on their own activities. Similarly, group conversations jump abruptly from topic to topic, and instead of diving deep into a subject, people get sidetracked by tangential comments or unrelated distractions.
This kind of shallow interaction reminds me of how the Indian cricket team is often criticized in the news. Players are accused of focusing more on their personal milestones than on the team’s overall performance. While I don’t watch cricket or know most of the players, this comparison seems apt for social media and group chats. Here, too, individuals prioritize their own needs or interests over fostering genuine connections or working toward the collective good.
No wonder social media has become a “kabadi kabadi” fellowship—a space marked by transient, superficial connections rather than meaningful engagement.
