Keeping God on pedestal

[English and Hindu]

‘Then isn’t it when we put Muktinath on pedestal it’s a way of seeking that innate desire of perfectionism.’—Supriya

I think we can never put Muktinath on a pedestal aiming for some so-called perfection in life.  At least for me it is part of my bhakti. Let me further explain.

Our relationship with God remains unique.  I would like to present my view [again] with an illustration.  We all have a unique or special relationship with our mother.  A child’s relationship with her mother won’t be the same in her relationship with others.  Even a mother’s relationship won’t be like that of a child.  If she has more than one child, her relationship would change, if not in kind but in degree according to the needs of each child.  A weak child will receive more attention and affection from a mother.  In our relationship with our mother though we never keep her on a higher pedestal, however we become familiar with her still there will be a subtle respect and reverence for her in our spirit.  This comes not because of any fear but as she earned it from us through her sacrifice, we have that respect for her to keep her on a special pedestal.

The same is with God.  Here bhakti helps.  Bhakti celebrates our relationship with God depicting various kinds of relationships.  Though our Indian [Hindu] tradition talks about a God without attribute, bhakti tradition always celebrates that relationship in human terms.  To say in other words God limits Herself according to our terms and conditions in bhakti.  Even She becomes our servant as Bharatiyar calls Kannan as my servant.

When it comes to Muktiveda it never talks about any abstract philosophy about God.  God always stands in relationship with us, even as a Mother as we found in Purva Veda.  This is more clearly demonstrated in the life of our Lord to the extent that he even went to the extent of washing the feet of his disciples.  I need not point out how he calls us his brother/sister and friends.

But in spite of experiencing our relationship with God in whichever format that we want, still like a child’s love for her mother, it stands unique.  Her siblings might have the same kind of unique relationship with her mother, but when it comes to her personally her mother always remains Her Private property though the child willingly accepts other’s right to have the same Private relationship.

This looks contradicting my own statement that: ‘We don’t have a Private God but personal relationship.  But considering the limitations of my English knowledge as well the limitations of English [or for any other language for that matter] we need to divert our attention on hair split analysis of these words.  The main theme is that though we celebrate our relationship with God through various forms of relationship still we equally have our respect and reverence for her like that we have for our mother.

In one of my secular songs in one stanza I wrote: ‘God who lives as a MOTHER in women; will show Her darshan taking that very form as a MOTHER.’  Even our Indian traditions several times happily replace Mother to God.  But this is not unique to Hinduism also.  The famous quote that we all know very well that ‘as God cannot be everywhere He created Mother’ comes from the Jewish tradition which insists clearly about Monotheism.  Whereas this particular statement clearly points to Pantheism or Panentheism.  So like a mother, God stands unique in His relationship with us which helps us to put Him on a pedestal not aiming for perfection but celebrating that relationship.

To end this heavy discussion with a lighter note:

When I shared this thought with a family person he told me, ‘As you were not married you always glorify women.  If you were married you might have changed your views.’  In response with a smile I said, ‘May be God, like Him also wants this understanding and attitude for me about Him as a Mother [women].  That’s why, again like Him, He made me remain single’.  Of course, the context of this song is completely different where I listed all the sacrifices that a woman makes for us.  I will post this song separately with the narratives

Why we miss the point that Muktinath wanted to communicate and got him confined to healing…’—Supriya

The next point that I would like to share my reflection is bending God to dance according to our tunes.  Particularly seeking miracles, healing and material needs etc.  As I said about God always willingly limiting Herself according to our terms and conditions.  She comes down to our level to meet our felt needs so that we can rise up in our spirit to Know Her and make Her Known.  So nothing wrong when one seeks God in her felt need that could be physical, mental or spiritual.  We cannot divide our life in watertight compartments and consider one higher than the other.  As an Integrated whole, we need God’s blessings in every area of life.  Particularly as I several times pointed out, Muktiveda never despises materiality as ‘Maya’ but insists its importance in our life.  ‘Gives us this our daily FOOD’, Lord taught his disciples to pray.

Though others who manage to move from the physical need to mental and spiritual needs, should never consider those who are still demanding for their physical and mental needs are in the ‘elementary level of their spirituality’.  Then our so-called growth and higher level of spirituality would like nothing but the vain glory of intellectual philosophy to them.  We all have the same kind of bhakti expression [or call it faith] not varying in degree but only in kinds.  Of course Muktiveda warns about the struggle between ‘flesh and spirit’  but this ‘flesh’ is not related to the material needs of our body but the fallen nature that we all still have with us, even those who think that they have overcome the physical needs.

Regarding the question of perfection: The only formula that Muktiveda gives is that we are saved, we are being saved and we will be saved.  Replace ‘save’ to ‘perfection’.  I think it was Richard Wumbrand who said: We are saved sinners but struggling saints.  Above all ‘perfection’ is a relative term.  Suppose if a bhakta claims that she reached a perfect bhakti/faith/spirituality, then God would raise the bar further a few inches to attempt more. That’s why I often used to say, ‘it is very easy to follow the Ten Commandments. If you manage to implement them, then you become perfect [as per the Law].  Whereas following Muktinath is very difficult as He always remains a TASK MASTER with a whip on his hand.  If we manage to jump ten feet in our spiritual life, with a smile he will raise the bar and encourage us to jump that high. There won’t be an end to it.  As perfection is always going to remain a relative value, we should strive for it not accepting defeat one time or several times in life.  Otherwise following the Lord would remain merely a religious ritual.

Why can’t we too be in one with God like Muktinath—Supriya

There is lots of difference between ‘be in one with God’.  I don’t want to go in depth about giving various perspectives of philosophy/theology on this point.  This is a problem with any language.  ‘One with God’ could mean anything according to one’s interpretation.  If we talk about ‘be in one with God’ means sharing in His essence, Muktiveda never promotes this kind of theology.  Leaving theology, even to relish the relationship with God, it is better not to become ‘one with Him’.  As Vallabha tradition insists ‘…love requires two, because sweetness needs “another” to taste it.’

At the same time as Muktiveda talks about what we created in the IMAGE  of God, redemption means restoration of that IMAGE in us.  That’s what Muktiveda, particularly Uttara Veda, says when it talks about ‘we will become like Him’ in resurrection.  However that is a distant reality in the Further shore.  But while living with this mortal body in a fallen world, unless we already had ‘REALIZED’ that ‘Oneness with Him’ there is no point in waiting to experience it in Further Shore.  Muktiveda says that Mukti already began which will become perfect in the Further Shore. [This is the day of salvation].

But we have forgotten what our ingredient is as we got involved in this world-Supriya.

This is the testing ground for us.  We need to be involved with this world and cannot and should not run away from it [like the Towering Saints who lived in the desert in the name of not involving in this fallen world.  Jews also created a similar Qumarn community away from the society living in caves waiting for the messiah.]  This is one area in which Hindu Bhakti tradition is heavily criticized as it failed to bring the needed transformation in the society, always trying to escape from it in the name of bhakti ecstasy.  Chottu Lal clearly tells us that though we should not be contaminated by the world does not mean running away from it. If our involvement in this world makes us forget our ingredient as a bhakta of the Lord, then we have to work out our mukti with fear and trembling.  It is like going through fire.  Those who cannot sand will fall, but who manage to survive will come out of it successfully as Chotu Lal illustrates this in another place.

That’s why wherever the missionaries went around the world they ‘involved’ in the world but with limited understanding of missiology.  Most of them used this ‘involvement’ as a means to the end., converting people to their ‘form’ of Christianity.  Though they were initially successful in some parts of the world, this strategy never gave proper dividend to their investment everywhere, particularly in India.  This is completely another subject and we need not dwell here further. I am not sure whether I can phrase it in this way: ‘We are in the world but not with the world’.

Fear of God should not be taken as fearing some punishment failing appeasing a deity but in the sense of ‘reverence’.  God punishing any kind of transgression is also a big subject.  The common Hindu view is that we are not ‘punished for our sin but by our sin’.  Teaching of Muktiveda on this subject is a bit complicated one I think. Others can contribute on this subject sharing their view
