Loneliness versus Solitude

Loneliness versus Solitude

When Bertrand Russell, the philosopher and academic (1872-1970), said, “He who does not like loneliness will never find freedom,” it prompted me to reflect deeply on the distinctions between loneliness, living alone, and embracing solitude.

Though I don’t know much English, I sense a subtle distinction between “loneliness,” living “alone,” and embracing a life of “solitude.” From what little I understand, Western philosophy emerged within an individualistic culture influenced by Enlightenment ideals. Recognizing these influences provides a strong context, highlighting how Western philosophical thought often focuses on individual autonomy and reasoned inquiry. Although I once listened to an entire talk on the history of philosophy—which mostly went over my head—it made me realize just how complex philosophy is, far beyond offering simple life solutions. Acknowledging that philosophy doesn’t easily yield straightforward answers captures an essential aspect of philosophical study.

Curious for another perspective, I consulted AI for its view. Before sharing it, I wanted to reflect further on this topic from my personal experience.

I practice solitude as a personal sadhana (spiritual discipline), not as a lifestyle. It suits my temperament and needs, and although I’ve often been alone, even in crowds, I’ve never felt lonely. For me, solitude is a blessing, while loneliness feels like a disease, and feeling “alone” can feel like a curse. Many people can feel lonely even in a crowd if they feel disconnected from those around them. As social beings, humans crave companionship, which is true across cultures, as captured by the saying, “Man is a social animal.” Yet, for various reasons—either due to personality or relationship challenges—many people feel alone even when surrounded by others, sometimes starting at home.

To overcome loneliness, we need to seek solutions within our reach. This begins with accepting our situation and engaging with ourselves, rather than feeling alienated even in our own company. Loneliness often results from not accepting reality or refusing to engage with oneself, becoming a stranger even to oneself. There’s a famous line from Udirippukkal by Balakumaran: “If abuse is inevitable, turn back and enjoy it.” So, loneliness can be transformed into an opportunity for introspection.

I find practicing silence as a sadhana helpful; afterward, you can explore hobbies or other activities that suit your temperament. For me, creating art is a powerful sadhana, second only to silence. Many Buddhist and Christian monks have practiced this as part of their spiritual disciplines.  For me, reading isn’t just a hobby; it’s an essential part of my life. It allows me to engage with scholars and, in doing so, also helps me overcome loneliness.

Next, consider connecting with people. Social media offers countless opportunities for this, though it’s essential to use it mindfully. Scrolling through videos and posts without real engagement only wastes time and may even heighten loneliness. Instead, try selecting one meaningful video or message and engage with it fully. For instance, I sometimes watch a documentary even if I don’t fully understand it, to feel that I’ve learned something rather than merely passing time.

When exchanging messages in groups, it’s crucial to respond to others’ posts, even with a simple emoji. I’ve noticed in some groups that when someone shares a message, there’s often silence—no response or engagement. Some might hesitate to reply, unsure of what to say or fearing they might offend. But silence can make people feel isolated or ignored. I make it a point to reply in groups or one-on-one, to let others know I value their messages. Lack of response often subtly implies avoidance, which can make people feel excluded. By engaging with others, we not only overcome our loneliness but also help others feel less alone.

Of course, nothing compares to in-person connections, where communication flows beyond words and body language speaks volumes. I recently learned that in England, certain benches are designated in parks and public places to encourage strangers to sit and chat, helping to address loneliness. In some countries, such as Japan, loneliness has become so widespread that the government is treating it as a serious issue.

Embrace solitude when the opportunity arises—it can be a powerful sadhana. But if you want to avoid loneliness, make a conscious effort to engage with others, starting with yourself, to avoid feeling “alone.”

In summary, we’ve captured an important distinction among loneliness, solitude, and being alone. Although all three terms involve being by oneself, each carries unique emotional or philosophical nuances:

1. Loneliness: This is often associated with a painful feeling of isolation or emptiness, reflecting a yearning for connection or companionship.

2. Alone: This is a neutral term meaning “by oneself” without implying positive or negative feelings.

3. Solitude: Unlike loneliness, solitude is typically seen as a chosen state, where one seeks time by oneself for rest, reflection, or personal growth.

In essence:

– Loneliness is an emotional experience of lacking connection.

– Alone is simply being without others.

– Solitude is a chosen, often fulfilling state of being alone.
