Welcoming the New Year with positive thoughts, someone wrote a Tamil song which was forwarded to me. I found many positive and moral exhortations in that song. However, one line stood in stark contrast to the spirit of the song, contradicting its overall message. Reflecting on this, I wrote the following song to share my views on Maya.

Maya is a complex subject that has been discussed extensively by scholars and scriptures in various ways. Since the time of Sri Adi Sankara, and even before him, this concept has dominated discussions in Indian philosophy. Various acharyas and commentators have provided numerous interpretations. In modern times, many scholars have also contributed their insights into this concept. However, as per my understanding, Maya is often misunderstood by many of us, including myself. Particularly, this concept of Maya dominates the Indian mind. Although we lament the fleeting nature of life as Maya when faced with difficulties, we continue to pursue life with even greater vigor, seeking its pleasures and comforts.

For those who clearly understand the Indian worldview, it is evident that matter is not rejected as Maya, but its transient nature is acknowledged. Among the Purusharthas (dharma, artha, kama, and moksha), artha (wealth) has a significant role to play. Many teachers and Smriti writers emphasized the importance of artha, even to achieve other goals of life. Instead of blaming or lamenting Maya, let us understand its real meaning and continue to celebrate life.

Killing the evil within us

என்றுணர்ந்தால்

இன்பம் நமதே….

அன்போடு அரவணைப்போம்

அனைவரையும்…         

பாசத்தைப் போலி இல்லாமல்

பகிர்ந்திடுவோம்…. செய்நன்றியை இறுதி மூச்சுவரை

செலுத்திடுவோம்….

இவை அத்துணையும்

மனதில் கொண்டு புத்தாண்டை

மகிழ்வுடன் வரவேற்போம்….

நம்முள் உள்ள

தீமையைக் கொன்று

புதிதாய்ப் பிறந்திடுவோம்….

என் இனிய புத்தாண்டு                  

நல் வாழ்த்துக்கள்….
