My Mother and the Ganpati Festival

This morning (18-9-2023), during my walk, I heard some Ganpati songs from the local temple. I realized that today might be the Ganpati Festival. Living in my own world with books and writing, I often forget about the outside world. This made me remember all the arrangements I used to make for my mother to celebrate her most favorite festival: Ganesh Chaturthi. Last year, I was not well and recovering from a pacemaker operation. Understanding my condition, my mother didn’t pressure me to do anything. But knowing her heart, I secretly arranged a wonderful decoration in her personal shrine where she kept her favorite images of Ganpati and Nataraja. I also prepared the traditional prasad for Ganpati: Appam and Aval. When she came out after taking a bath and saw the arrangements, she wasn’t surprised but said, “I am not sure whether I will be celebrating it next year.” With the help of her caretaker, she celebrated her last Ganpati festival.

I thought about how I could remember her on her favorite festival. I decided to do what I would have done if she were still living with me. Although I didn’t arrange any special pooja for Ganpati, I prepared the same traditional prasad. There is a man, Siva Kumar, admitted to the Siddha hospital in the same ashram compound. He met with an accident and has been bedridden for over six months. His aged father, who is now 74, stays with him to take care of him. His father, Balasubramanyam, is almost worn out. I often sit and talk with them, and I prepare some of Siva Kumar’s favorite food (Sambar rice) and give it to him once a week. This morning, I decided to give those traditional items that I prepared to Siva Kumar. I also made popcorn, thinking that Ganpati Baba would like it. I called his father and gave them the prasad, thanking him for taking care of his son even at this age. It is one thing for children to take care of bedridden parents, but here is an old father taking care of his bedridden son for more than six months.

I suggested they get discharged and go to his second son’s home in Chennai. They are financially struggling, and with Siva Kumar being the only proper earning member now bedridden, I promised to take them with me to Chennai during the first week of October.

I also made my mother’s favorite tiffin: Rava Dosa. I made it in my own way, making it more crispy. I have my own recipe for that. Instead of using instant Rava dosa mix, I use wheat flour, mix it the previous night, and soak it in water for one hour. Then I keep it in the fridge all night and take it out in the morning to prepare. Try this way, and I assure you that you will make the best one as I do.

In this way, I remembered my mother today and celebrated every mother through her.
