As I mentioned in another article, Phobia, there are more mature and even younger Congress leaders who are naturally qualified to become the official Opposition leader. Yet, as I pointed out, this is the curse of dynastic politics, which deprives Indian democracy of that opportunity. At the same time, I am happy that Rahul has now become the Opposition leader, as he can no longer make irresponsible statements against certain government decisions, mainly regarding external matters, keeping the nation’s interest in mind. Since he will be given vital information, if not all, he should be careful before making any public statements attacking the government. Some of the information shared with him as the Opposition leader will remain classified, and he cannot openly mention it. He needs to handle it in a more mature way in public, which he currently lacks. At least now, he should be wise enough to seek guidance from senior, mature party leaders, rather than relying solely on those who only say, “YES BOSS.” The effectiveness of his role as the Opposition leader will depend on whether he surrounds himself with “YES” men and women or those bold enough to point out their objections.
A good democracy cannot function properly without an effective Opposition leader. Modi enjoyed almost perfect monopoly in his previous two terms as PM, where several crucial decisions were made without consulting the Opposition, though he might have consulted some of them without public knowledge. However, it is good that he will now have to deal with this check and balance in his third term, which might also allow him to play more safely. One important piece of advice by Chanakya to a king is, “Keep your enemy close to you, while you can keep your friend at a distance.” This helps a king keep a close eye on the activities of his enemy. There is a similar saying in Tamil: “Pahayalik kudumbatta uravadik kedu” (destroy your enemy by keeping a good relationship with him). Being an Opposition leader in a democracy is more risky than being the PM, as it is a hotter seat than the PM’s. Certain vital information cannot be easily handled or disclosed; neither can he chew it nor can he vomit it out, though he may secretly leak the information outside. However, that kind of political maneuvering is only for smart politicians, and that is not Rahul’s cup of tea.
Many Congress party members might rejoice and even celebrate the new feather in Rahul’s dynastic cap. But for many of the more mature Congress leaders, this will bring more worry and even nightmares, as they know Rahul’s weaknesses better than his strengths. His primary advantage is that he was born with a silver spoon or with dynastic power.
Finally, as an ancient Tamil saying goes: “Kalaham pirandaldan needi kidaikkum” (clarity is possible only after some confusion; or justice will be done only after some serious violation of dharma).
Hopefully, this will be proven right by making Rahul the leader of the Opposition. We Indians, who desire a vibrant democracy, will live with the hope that regardless of who the PM or the Opposition leader is, in the end, it will be good for democracy. Though for now, we will keep our fingers crossed.
