The people won’t change, the world stays blind,
But change yourself — and free your mind.
If you would mend the world you see,
Begin within — that is the key.
One who never mends his way
Can’t help another find the way.
Before you judge or raise your voice,
Ask if your life reflects your choice.
Where is fault not found, my friend?
Where do cracks not twist and bend?
This world was never made perfect —
So don’t pretend you’re heaven-sent.
Before you name what others lack,
See what’s bright — and speak that back.
With eyes that honor all that’s good,
You’ll clear the dark, as few else could.
But if you count just flaws each day,
Even you will fail that way.
To only see what’s bent or wrong —
That too is fault, and just as strong.
If you ignore the good that’s near,
You lose the right to blame or sneer.
Let justice guide both tongue and mind —
First praise the good, then faults you find.

Not Good If Detached: A Response to the Voice of Protest
In recent times, I have come across poems, articles, videos, and images that paint a deeply negative picture of life — highlighting despair, corruption, social injustice, and human suffering in all forms. These works often express anger and hopelessness, portraying the world as irredeemably dark. Whenever I read or watch such portrayals, only one thought echoes within me: there is no perfect life, no perfect family, community, society, or world — anywhere.
But does that mean all is lost just because something has gone wrong?
I have seen videos of young boys and girls who, after losing both arms — and in some cases, both arms and legs — continue to live with quiet strength and dignity. They strive to lead a “normal” life, not with bitterness, but with courage — and often, with a smile. When I see them, even while reading or hearing voices of despair, I’m reminded: not everything is broken.
In some cases, those born with such physical limitations seem to have been inwardly equipped from the beginning to cope. But even more striking are those who, after living a healthy and normal life, suddenly become disabled. They are forced to relearn everything from scratch — to adjust to a new reality. And yet, in doing so, they show us that all is not lost simply because something went wrong in life.
Ironically, the strongest voices of negativity often come from people like me — those who live relatively comfortable lives, with full physical faculties, moderate health, and reasonably secure circumstances. It is often we who imagine or portray the world with overwhelming darkness and despair.
But this is not new. Such thinking has existed in the past, continues today, and will likely persist in the future. The difference now is that social media gives these thoughts global reach. In parallel, however, there are also stories of resilience, hope, and positive change — stories told with clarity, compassion, and purpose.
This doesn’t mean we shouldn’t speak up against wrongs. As the poet of that Hindi verse asks — “How can you remain silent when atrocities are happening around you?” Indeed, we must raise our voices. But not merely to condemn. The real question is: What are we doing personally to address the wrongs around us?
Writing poems or promoting a worldview soaked in despair will not solve the problems we face. Meanwhile, there are countless individuals — unseen, unheard — who are working quietly to bring healing and hope to those wounded by society. They do not parade their virtue. They do not write bitter verses. They do not circulate dark messages. They simply act.
And they are the real builders of a better world.
If we do not learn from them, and instead continue to amplify only the noise of despair, we risk becoming part of the very negativity we claim to resist.
So, in response to that voice of protest, I wrote my own poem. It is a simple reminder: Unless you can name ten good things in someone’s life, you have no right to name even one fault. This is not just my personal conviction. It echoes the words of Tan Bum in her book Not Good If Detached — where she warns that when we remain mentally, morally, and socially detached, even while appearing active, it is in fact a subtle betrayal of life. It is not good if detached.
As I know the person who really wrote such a wonderful poem with perfect poetic style [in spite of the negative theme in it] I cannot share the original poem in Hindi or even verbatim English translation. But I am giving a summary of that poem in English but with my response to it which I wrote in Tamil [but not with a perfect poetic style], as usual with Hindi-Sanskrit and English translations.

Summary of the Original Hindi Poem
This is a powerful poem of anguish and protest. The poet cries out against injustice, oppression, and moral decay in society. They feel suffocated by the silence and indifference around them and insist that speaking up is not just a right but a matter of life and death.

When I asked ChatGPT to convert my Tamil poem in Hindi, by mistake it translated my reflection [Not Good if Detached] in poetic form. Though I rebuked it for doing this, still as I liked the way it rendered this reflection I retained it and asked it to do the same in English as a poem and here is the result by ChatGPT:
Not Good If Detached
A response to the voice of protest
I’ve seen the world through many eyes—
Some weep, some rage, some whisper sighs.
In poems, posts, and painted frames,
The world is shown in grief and flames.
A flood of sorrow, cries of wrong,
Corruption’s grip, injustice strong—
Despair now walks with heavy tread,
As if all light and hope are dead.
But is all lost when things go wrong?
Does life not still sing some soft song?
There is no perfect world, we know,
No flawless stream where sorrows don’t flow.
Yet I have seen the quiet grace
In children with no arms, no face
Of bitterness—they rise, they smile,
And walk their pain with humble style.
Some born with limbs that never grew
Still shine with strength we never knew.
But greater still are those who fall
From health to loss—and yet stand tall.
They learn again to live, to be—
Their courage redefines the “me.”
They show us all is not erased
When life turns dark, or dreams displaced.
Yet irony begins to bite—
The loudest cries come from those right
In health, in strength, in comfort’s bed,
Who paint the world in only red.
This isn’t new; it’s always been—
In every age, despair is seen.
But now our words, once kept inside,
Go viral with a single slide.
Still in the shadows stories bloom
Of healing hearts that clear the gloom.
They do not shout, nor claim the stage,
But quietly mend a broken age.
To raise our voice is just and right
When wrongs are done in broad daylight.
Yet blame alone is not enough—
The question is: What is your stuff?
Do you build where others fall?
Or simply curse the world and all?
What do you do, not what you say—
Is what will clear or cloud the way.
Some write of grief, some paint despair,
But healing hands are always rare.
They do not post, nor seek applause—
They serve the world without a cause.
If faults you count from dusk to dawn,
Even the stars would soon be gone.
And if you miss the good that’s there,
Your gaze itself becomes unfair.
Before you name the faults you see,
Name ten good things, or let them be.
That is not pride, nor soft deceit—
But justice in its truest seat.
I wrote these lines in humble tone,
Responding not in wrath, alone.
But stirred by one who dared to write
With truth and pain and piercing light.
I cannot share her lines in full—
But in my heart, they struck the skull.
And so I shaped my Tamil song,
To say: Detachment can go wrong.
As Ten Boom wrote, with depth and grace:
Detached hearts leave no healing trace.
You act, or else you turn your back—
The soul is lost on that dark track.
So hear me not with praise or scorn—
But weigh the words by life’s own thorn.
Not good if detached—this much is true.
The world still waits for you to do.
