BT Song 561
Humans, as a society we need each other. Similarly as thinking people, we need to read, listen and if necessary to record our thinking. However unless one first understands her own strength and weakness, talents and shortcomings none of these external activities will help her to interact with others. For this a period of silence in solitude [it could be any length of time] to know about oneself is very important. Talking less and listening more is the best first step for us to begin this sadhana. As someone said, if you allow a person to talk too long then she will contradict herself. Indeed speech is silver but silence is gold indeed, even platinum.
Secular Song 561

BT Song 561 This alone is good
My heart says to me
That one way
This is also
Good in life
Talking something
Reading something
Thinking something
And writing something
Finally realizing that
Nothing will come to help
Once we understand this
Very well in life
Closing our mouth
And become a silent person
Understanding the heart
And drowning in silence
Remain in solitude
To know oneself
Accepting that happens
Around us
To find peace
Amidst them all
Not roaring by
Talking too much
Listening with much patience
Talking very less
Living like this is
Good indeed
After realizing this
Walking the talk
Is as good indeed
Therefore—This is also good indeed
[As usual this genre of poem is very difficult to translate in another language as the final line of the poem summarizes by linking with the first life on this song]

Secular Song 562
We need counseling and guidance as we cannot do everything on our own. At the same time, asking advice from everyone is also not good. Though we need to listen to others and learn through their experience, we also need to listen to what our mind/heart says as it knows well our strength, weakness and need. So which one is the best companion for our life? Our own heart/mind. ‘One’s own atman is one’s friend and one’s own atman is one enemy’, says Gita [in a different context] though we need outside help also.
Secular Song 562

Secular Song 562 Advice and Action
Whoever might come?
And tell whatever they wish
Till we need to listen
What our mind says
Because it alone
Knows our situation
It will ask us to
Act accordingly
There are several to give advice
Even without being asked
But there will be many who
Refuse to give advice even when we sought
But when we try to
Think independently and act
Then all will come
To stop it
It is good
To seek advice
If some kind of
Clarity comes through it
But it also becomes
Dangerous sometime
As our brain becomes impotent
Because of that
Thinking clearly that
Which one helps us
To act properly
With clarity
When we began
To act
Then our mind will guide us
Along with others

Secular Song 563
One might wonder why I am writing such songs. But there is a reason for me to write this. Most non-Tamilians won’t even hear about this famous Tamil poet who wrote so many poems on various topics. But he is famous for his film songs which even changed the life of several people as they were inspired by his thoughts. Here I need not quote some of his [film] songs which motivated and completely changed the life of several individuals who shared about it in public. After Bharatiyar, Kannadasan stands very tall among his contemporaries as a poet.
I admire his poems. He not only wrote songs for films, but also on various deities including Muktinath [Yesukaviyam]. His book ‘Meaningful Hinduism’ [arthamulla Hinumadam] is very famous and has several printings. I remember several of his songs by heart. But for me his greatness lies not in his songs and other writings but in his transparent life which he never hid from anyone. Next to Mahatma Gandhiji he is the one contemporary Indian who openly shared all about his life.
When one controversy erupted about another famous Tamil poet who also is still writing songs for films and other poems, his life was compared with Kannadasan, particularly not remaining open about certain issues that created that controversy. This poet was caught in ‘Me too’ movement in Tamilnadu which even forced him to return back the award which Kerala government conferred on him [in fact he never returned it as he never received it but wrote to Kerala govt. that considering the current opposition by various women movement against him he requested them not to confer that award to him].
So when I was reading this controversy I wrote this poem praising Kannadasan not only about his poems but his transparent life. Rarely are such great poets particularly a person born amidst us. Though many won’t know about him, still nothing wrong in sharing my thoughts about him. As life cannot be put in watertight compartments, for me even writing such poems is part of my sadhana.
Secular Song 563

Secular song 563 Unparallel poet
Did he merely
Write poems, no
He compiled
All his thoughts [through his poems]
He lived a
Transparent life
He established himself
As the greatest poet
“If I die without
Holding a cup of wine
On one hand and
A woman in another
My life will remain
Merely a waste
And even God will ask me
‘Why you ever lived [such a life]?’”
By writing like this
He revealed
His life
Before everyone
He attained
Everlasting fame
And dwells
In the hearts of many
There is none
Equal to him as a poet
There is none
To write like him
As long as the world
And Tamil lives
There is no end
To his rule as a poet

Secular Song 564
We are what we are when we are ALONE ‘before god’. If you don’t believe in god then replace it with conscience. Rest of our life is nothing but the mere act of putting a mask before others. And there is no end to it even after our death as we leave this legacy for the next generation to continue.
Secular Song 564

Secular Song 564 The Mask
Putting a mask
And acting well
Cheating others
Very nicely
We try to escape
When the act ends
We lament unnecessarily
Thinking about life
We never get the
Character that we seek
The character that we got
Is not properly fit for us
Still acting that role
For others sake
We try to complete
The drama
But the drama
Never comes to an end
As the next part is
Coming after that
Not liking the character
And unable to act properly
Somehow we manage
To carry our life
Thinking that
If death comes this will end
We wait eagerly
For that
Like an
Unending story
It will continue
Even after we were gone
As the next generation
Continue the same
As we lead them
As before
As long as the world
And life remains
There won’t be an
End to this mask

Secular Song 565
Writing or not writing has become my problem. I don’t want to write. But my mind refuses to listen to these resolutions several times. So when I wrote it further resulted in asking further questions leading to further research and giving explanation. Then peace evades when I try all this. Got between rock and hard place I can either write or stop it. Anyhow I made a temporary truce with peace and decided not to write for some time.
Secular Song 565

Secular Song 565 What peace is?
I searched to know
what peace is
I gave my own
definition for it
Still, I didn’t
get the peace
and the explanation that I give
is not clear to me
Therefore, I stopped
doing the research
And try to avoid
asking questions about it
Then peace
came on its own
It gave it is own
definition for it [peace]
But it put
one condition for that
It told that I should not
write anything about it
It told me that
try to learn to live
silently what your
heart realized
unable to
overcome that restriction
unable to accept
as it is
still thinking that
let it be
I wrote
these lines
But that became
a snare again
as these lines
become another explanation
Until I stop
writing further
it refused to
stay with me
I don’t know which one is correct
and which one is wrong
I don’t know to whom
I shall listen
Therefore, unable to take risk
further by doing research
I silently went in the way
peace asked me to do
