Song 126
Recently I received an email from a person who asked a critical question in life. Some people are good in the practical part of life such as helping and reaching others. Others are good at analysing life and giving proper counsel. But who should one follow is a crucial issue. Most of the time we prefer those who are practical to the philosophers. But to keep a balance in life, we need both. Very few are good in both—counselling and involvement. Similarly very few take help from both with a discerning spirit.

126 Very few
When we are drowning
Jumping in water
By risking one’s life
Few will help us to reach the shore.
Standing on the shore
Talking philosophy
Some will give guidance
To swim and reach the shore.
Accompanying in this world
With us both in body and mind
By doing many help
Some will uplift us
Talking many ideology
By quoting various things
Some will give
Good advice
The seva of both
Is essential
Understanding the time, place and need
When they help.
Not clinging to one
And rejecting the other
Very few are there to live
Realizing their need.

Song 127
As my computer broke, I cannot do much work. The problem with gadgets is that we can neither live with them nor without them. Those who can fix the problem by following the instructions or using the Internet are blessed ones. But for a person like me, who is from an old generation, I cannot even follow and understand most of the instructions. It is not a problem only with the language but even a lack of knowledge with technical terms.
The Computer WIZARD who used to help me in the past has become too busy to help (or to respond to my messages). Realizing that there is no (more) hope with him, I approached Prakash, Prasad’s brother. (Prasad was my only obedient Shishya who won’t argue with me on everything but he passed away.) He said he will find out what he can do and try to contact his business partner in Hosur. First he said his business partner has no one. Then after a day, he called and said that he managed to contact another person who will come on the 30 to fix the problem.
Then this morning when I was thinking about the frustration of handling modern gadgets and also getting help, I realized that others need not carry my burden and if they don’t ask my help to unload their burden then I should salute them and remain thankful for that. There is no point in getting frustrated. Then I wrote this song.
How we enjoyed a relatively tension-free life in our childhood where we never allowed the gadgets to control and dictate our life! I wish I could go back to that GOLDEN AGE free of the computer and internet. Of course modern communication helps us to have global level communication at the cost of lack of communication within the home (where each one lives in her own world of gadgets). Technology improved the standard of life at the cost of personal health (because of frustration and tension—obesity, back pain, sugar, pressure and many more) and relationships.
How I too wish to have a break from the Gadgets, Computer, Internet—a minimum period of six months. But I am deprived of that fundamental human right.

127 Salute them (Don’t lament unnecessarily)
Why so much unnecessary lamentations
Thinking why you behave* like this
Does this world go as per your instruction?
Or things are going as per your words?
Each one has his own worries
How much work they have each day amidst their regular life
Can they spare time for you?
Can others unload your burden?
Unable to carry their own burdens
They are searching means to unload them
Meanwhile you try to upload your burden
Upon them
How far is this (your act) correct (justifiable?)
You have to think about it for a while
If they don’t call you to unload their burden
You have to SALUTE them.
There is a time to work too much
There is time to stand still
Poking your nose in everything
Why should you lament like this unnecessarily?

Song 128
After doing my regular reading, when I think about a day in my life, almost each day goes as it is programmed by some computer. Same food (only a change is the vegetable, but that too will come next week), same work, same rest, etc. After thinking about how routine my life is, I wrote this poem. Sometimes taking a break or rest looks like a strange concept to me. Because by taking a rest we are also busy. For me we cannot live without work [a-karmana]. People sometimes say that he or she is sitting idly, not doing anything. But I point out that ‘sitting idly not doing anything is also another kind of work’. Of course that is the most difficult task in life. Try to sit calmly, if possible remaining silent keeping away your mobile, book etc. If you can manage to spend an hour like this in this modern world where mobile controls your life, then it would be a miracle. Not doing any work is also work for me. Then don’t lament about routine from which no one can escape.

128 Strange/Funny routine
Fun is life indeed
Strange is the mind too
Routine is the work also
There is no way to run away from these!
Can I remain inactive without doing anything?
Or will I be too busy doing many things?
Both are not possible to anyone
Then what is the solution to this?
I thought ‘what does it mean to remain inactive’ (a-karmana)
(As) I have become tired by doing many things
Realizing that remaining ‘inactive’ (akarmana) itself is an act/work
Understanding that it is impossible for me to remain ‘inactive’.
Seconds are gone and become minutes
Days are gone and become a year
Years are gone and life comes to an end
Yet life will go continuously….
There is nothing strange in this
No wonder is in the mind
There is no way to escape
From this routine life
Therefore—let us complete this life by living playfully
And keep that wonder in our mind
Let us also accomplish
All the routine without missing anything.

Poem 129
When we cooperate with others and work with them adjusting as much as possible we can accomplish so many things. Throwing away people from our life is easy, but restoration will become very costly.
129 Cooperate with others
As there are many
And as they support me
Why should I get troubled?
Thinking so many things?
Will anything come only asking our permission?
Do good or bad will come seeing our situation
Good and bad will come
As per our activity
Worrying unnecessarily
Having unnecessary vain thoughts
If we put them on our head
Headache will come automatically
Only understanding our part
When we do it without giving up
Others’ activities will
Coordinate automatically with our work
Having proper communication
Sharing with each other’s shortcomings
If we cooperate as much as possible
Is there anything impossible for us?
Talking always critically
Get irritated and become upset
If we throw away others
Even our body will become tired
Stand with other as much as possible
Stand by when it is not possible
Co-operating along with others
We should live on this world

130 mere lightning
One can understand pain and suffering only if she experiences it
The struggle in life will be realized when one actually lives
We cannot understand other’s burden
Even if we understand that won’t help anyone.
Embryo is formed after an encounter
It will grow in the womb by struggling with itself
It will come out going to the end of pain (both for the mother and the baby)
And it will grow in life with the company of suffering alone.
Yet this alone is not the life
Pain and pleasure alone is not the end of life
Pleasure in pain and pain in pleasure
Become the reality of life.
Come what may, why should we feel sorrow
We have to live and why should be troubled
Endeavouring in shortcomings and rejoicing in success
We have to complete this life by living it totally
There is no pleasure without any pain
There are no efforts without any toil (with pain)
Amidst this like a lightning
Appearing and disappearing is the truth about pleasure/joy
16-10-2015, mathigiri, 2.45 pm.
On October 14th night, in 2015 I suffered a lot due to my back pain. I cannot even lie down on my bed. If I lay down the pain increased. It was after midnight and I couldn’t call anyone to help. I don’t have any pain killer, though my mother has one. I am not sure whether I can use it for myself or not. So from 11.30 pm to 2.30 I was sitting on the chair keeping pillows behind. But the pain didn’t come down and I could not sleep. When the pain increased even in sitting position, then I stood and slightly bending my body by keeping my hands on the table. In this way I spent my time with much pain. Then I woke up my mother and asked for her pain killer. She was very panicked on seeing my condition and immediately applied the ointment which she uses for her pain. Then I managed to sleep by sitting on the chair from 3.00 to 3.30. Then I decided to lie down on my bed again. But when I lay down the pain aggravated again. So bending my body like Z I slept with less pain till 5.00. But in my sleep when I turned on my back, due to shocking pain, again I got up then could not sleep. Again after taking my meal and another pain killer I managed to sleep on 15th morning from 11.30 to 1.00 pm.
So when I was reflecting on that experience this afternoon, I realized that most of the time PAIN and SUFFERING are the only reality in life and all the joy and pleasure that one enjoys is like a lightning which flashes for a fraction of second. But that joy and pleasure alone motivate us to persevere in life amidst the pain and suffering. The hope of enjoying some joy and pleasure alone is the driving force behind human life. For every fleeting pleasure and joy we humans have to pay a heavy cost.
I have to find the reference from Manikkavasagar, who describes all the pain and suffering that we undergo from the day the fetus formed in the womb, growth and delivery etc. Buddha has to flee from his pleasure, seeking the answer to it. But the driving force of seeking pleasure and finding joy (anand, bliss) by all—including a sannyasi, who seeks eternal bliss (anand), undermines the suffering and pain not realizing that they too are part of our lives. In Hindi they say: Habi gam; Habi kushi.
