Secular Songs 576 to 580

BT Song 576

Sometimes I feel stunned in the presence of God, unable to do anything or to say anything.  Like a wood I will sit quietly, of course allowing my mind to wander where it wants to go. But often felt some kind of paralysis within me unable to do anything but sit quietly in His presence. I cannot even say that I enjoy it or experience some kind of special feeling. But I will sit quietly staring blankly. Of course I will be consciously alert and I can recall all that went through my mind but unable to move or do anything I will sit stunned. Today I had a similar experience. When I recalled it, I wrote this song.

…Then one will find within the core of one’s being, not in external things, “joy of heart,” as “the effect of God’s providence.” {St. John Chrysostom, Commentary on the Psalms, vol. I, trans. Robert Charless Hill (Brookline, MA: Holy Cross Orthodox Press, 1998), p. 65}}  “Hope-filed,” “secure,” “recollected,” {John} Chrysostom {347-407} describes the hesychia, or inner stillness of contemplative benefits, when one can enjoy “rest” in the Lord…..(Ibid. P. 70)— Bruce K. Waltke and James M. Houston, with Erika Moore, The Psalms As Christian Worship: A Historical Commentary, Grand Rapids, Michigan, William B. Eerdmans Publishing Company, 2010 p. 211

BT Song 576

BT Song 576 I need this boon

When you come shall I say no to you?

When you come to lord over me shall I reject it

When you come to tell, shall I refuse to listen?

When you preoccupy mind shall I stop

Each day I am long for this

By giving me I come to receive you

I am rejoicing keeping me within you

I will ask this only boon to received you each day

I got some kind of disturbance within me

And I rushed unto you to share it

When I come near to you, I forgot all about them

Silently I bowed at your feet

When you hugged both by shoulders

Forgetting myself I fall on your chest

Closing my eyes as I keep my head on your chest

Taking me kindly you hugged me deeply within you

Then what happened I don’t remember

I don’t have language to explain it

I don’t have a heart to miss it again

And I don’t have courage to give it up

In order to give up my body in such situation

And to mingle within you by becoming one with you

No more I need this life on this earth

I came to ask only this boon to you

BT Song 577

Another song based on Surdas:

If in this world I could find someone else,

Why would I time and again come to you

uttering the same old prayer?

I’ve begged from them all—from Shiva and Brahma,

the gods and antigods, the sages, the snakes; (p.711)

I’ve chased mirages like a thirst-driven deer.

Was there any effort I spared?

Fool that I was, I left your feet—the shore—

to flounder in the fathomless waters of being

till Death came along and silently grabbed me,

as a wolf stealthily grabs a goat.

Frenzied, I wanted to travel down every road-

roads that were no roads—mindless fool that I was,

and was lost, exhausted, like a wheel without its cart

when I saw I was trapped in what I’d done.

I abandoned my manliness to the tug of untamed senses

like an elephant mired in the mudo

or a monkey strung to it acrobat mistress:

whatever she says, it does.

owing to the weakness of its eyes, an owl

refuses to believe in the sun, and I,

pervaded instantly and utterly by sin,

could only ardently, vainly sift the filth.

Listen, merciful one, you who ever pity the poor,

you who remove the world’s three searing pains,

take this perverted Sur into your care

in this desperate, tortured age.

—Sur’s Ocean, eds. Kenneth E Bryant, trs. By John Stratton Hawley, Massachusetts, Murty Classical Library of India, Harvard University Press, Song 411, p. 71 & 713

BT Song 577

2.00, Sur, song 411, p. 712-13

BT Song 577 Show mercies

I cannot get anywhere else

None other have redeemed me

Therefore, where shall I go?

Leaving you who came to redeem me

I chased after the maya

Like the deer chasing the mirage

Though you came to show the way to come out

I went on floating on the form

Though you opened the door to overcome the death

Yet I went through it silently

I went where there is no path

Finally stand depressed

Like a cart which overturned?

By losing its axel, I too become overturned

I too lived like a monkey which does gymnastic

Instructed by its master,

Like a wildly elephant

I too wandered losing my mind

Like an owl without having proper sight

I spent my days searching for food in the night

The merciful one who took pity on the sinners

Again, showing your mercy save me

The dog which carries

Filth on its body every day

Mathigiri, 17-11-16, 2.00 pm.

BT Song 578

God is called ‘inner witness in our Hindu tradition’. But unlike others, He never uses harsh words or rebukes severely. But very gently but strongly He whips our conscience in such a way that we can find no excuse in His presence.  I am thankful to God to have such a Guru within me to continue to remain as an inner witness.

BT Song 578

BT Song 578 Inner voices

I cannot renounce completely

I don’t have the wisdom to know in full.

Doing some mistakes

I learnt to live properly

Putting mask for different people

Acting according to the situation

Finally realizing my condition

I realized my original nature

Remaining within me

Watching silently

When need comes, telling about it

You ask me to get it corrected

You won’t shout at me

You won’t rebuke me suddenly

Silently you will

Help me to realize it

Remaining as the inner voice

Through the language of silence

Telling so that I can understand

You show the way to correct me

I received you as my guru

I received grace abundantly

I give me to you completely

I will live always for you

Mathigiri, 18-11-16, 2.25 pm.

BT Song

As I began my regular walking in the hall, I said to the Lord, ‘what is the reason for you to show this kind of special favour only to me? Though I never ask, you give more than what I required.  But this extra grace never becomes excess to me and though I cannot understand the reason for it, I am going to enjoy it like nectar.  Then as inspiration flowed, I wrote this song based on the very mediation.

BT Song 579

BT Song 579 The nectar

I will say that this is your grace

I came to sing about it

What you give for me specially

I came to receive it

For some reason

You have special affection for me

Once realizing this

I too have much love for you

Till the end

I cannot understand the reason for this

But I don’t have time

To even think about it

To write a new song each day

To sing and praise you

To share many things about others

To pray for them

I don’t have enough time for these

I don’t have rest even for a minute

More than this I have many other needs

Added to these I have many worries

But I know one thing for sure

I have told about it many times

As you are there to carry my burden

Why should I worry about all these?

I will tell that this is what is called your grace

This only I received everyday

Though you give more than that I need

I received it as the nectar

Mathigiri, 18-11-16, 11.10 pm.

BT Song 580

Today I made a strong decision not to write any more poems as it often disturbs my mind too much.  When I do other works also, as some kind of inspiration flows, it interferes with that particular work and compels me to write some poem. In other words, I myself become tired of my own poems (so I understand others also feel the same and blessed are the ones who never read my poems).  After my regular reading in Muktiveda I took my book to do my regular reading.  Then I recalled my resolution not to write any more poems. But that became a snare.  We say as a joke in Tamil that when a person often forgets to take his medicine in time, it is recommended to her to think about the monkey when she has to take medicine. Then this very thought will remind me about the monkey and medicine. And in the same way as I recalled my resolution not to write, that very resolution itself began to inspire and bothered me. But ignoring it I continued my reading, but without any hope. Though I read the lines, I couldn’t understand what I was reading.  The inspiration continues to flow, not allowing me to concentrate on my reading. So accepting my defeat I wrote this song.

BT Song 580

BT Song 580 a flood breaching the shore

I should not do anything

In order to proclaim to everyone

Others should not talk

About my relationship with you

Somehow you kept a desire within me

And made me to sing constantly about your grace

You made me to come to you

To be with you even for few seconds to share

When I cannot even understand

About the greatness of this relationship

Where shall I find words and means?

To write it down

Some inner compulsion comes

It forces me to talk with you

Once I began to talk with you

Like a forceful fountain, words come automatically

I tried to reason out by many ways

I tried to stop it by many means

Like the flood which will breach the shore

I fond words overflowing within me

When I try to close the breach on one side

There appear many breaches

There is no way to stop them

There is no means to prevent them

Therefore, I have recorded this

Not to communicate to others

What is the need for another song?

To tell about our relationship
