Secular Song 581
This evening, I watched BBC news about the latest political and economic turmoil. After huge protests Raja Bakshe fled from his palace. Then the anchor interviewed one top Sri Lankan Bureaucrat about the current situation. After the regular question and answer about the current political and economic crises, the anchor asked how he is managing. Then the Bureaucrat controlling his emotion with much melancholic spirit said that they were all struggling to even to run the day to day life without fuel, power and rations. If pressed a bit further he would have broken down and cried. I felt very sad for the Sri Lankans. One family completely spoiled the entire country. Both Putin and Xi are doing the same in their country. They are not ready to learn from others. However, when I was reflecting about it then I turned to me and people around me. Beginning from my mother everyone has some struggle due to old age, health issues, economic problems and relationship issues. Then I remembered what Kabir told about it and wrote this poem (Secular Song) 581:
-Of all that wear this flesh, are none found happy; all that thou seest are wretched.
Rulers and ruled, the poor, the rich; the lowest of the low, the headman of the village.
In greater or in less degree the whole world is in grief; the house –holder and the hermit alike.
Happy in this world is no father of sons; happy no lonely recluse.
The Jogi is troubled, the Jangam is troubled; to him who seeks out penances is two-fold
trouble.
The thirst of desire springs up in all; there is no palace but contains it.
I speak truth, yet no one heeds; lies I may not utter.
Brahma, Visnu, Mahesa are troubled, who have traced out this path.
The solitary is troubled, the king is troubled; the poor is troubled for his crippled lot.
Kabir says, ” O brother Sadhus, that man wins happiness who overcomes his mind.
Secular Song 581

Secular Song 581
Secular Song 581 Unending struggles
We born
Only to struggle
We live each day
Struggling a lot
Though we become old
And our body worn out
Still this struggle
Will continue there also
When we sleep
Longing to take rest
As our body
Became very tired
As we think about
Needs of next day
Losing our sleep
We will continue to struggle
Though many come
To support and take care of us
And even if we handover
All the responsibilities to them
As our needs
depends upon their seva
The struggle will also
Continued there
Thinking that
No more need of anything
And if we go to forest
After renouncing everything
As our needs
Continue like shadow
Then our struggle will
Become extra burden
None to unload
Our burden
And not having strength
To carry further
Gathering shishyas
And if we form an ashram
New kinds of struggles
Will come there
Thinking that
What kind of struggle is this
Unable to share
With others as well
Having a saffron attire
And putting a mask
Our struggle will continue
Even in that our act
There is no life
Without struggle
There is no use
In lamenting about it
Whether family
Or Sannyasa
As long as we have a body
There is no end to it
We took a body
Only to struggle
It will continue
Even after our death
As our memory
Becoming a burden to others
A new struggle will begin there
An unending story

Secular Song 582
After the pacemaker was installed in my body the one constant advice that I received from every corner of the globe is: take complete rest. Don’t work as before [particularly in taking care of your mother]. Now you have a foreign body and keep this in mind and try to take complete rest.
Though like every other Indian I too love to argue, still not finding time for that I neither said yes nor say no. Later when I was reflected upon this advice the one question that came in my mind was: What ultimately is this rest?
All our inner organs are working constantly without taking any rest. When any organ becomes weak and decides to take rest, not allowing it, we rush to repair it and force it to work as before. We allowed any of them to take a rest. After making them busy again, we advise us to take complete rest.
As I often say, humans were never created to take rest but to work. This begins from the womb and might end only in the grave. The concept of taking rest is antithesis for me. Taking rest is another kind of act, in fact more difficult than to remain busy. Try to take the so-called rest and see what happens after 24 or 36 hours. Then, unable to sleep after lots of sleep and rest at the same time, unable to return back to the normal life we will become more restless. This doesn’t mean that we should over-toil our body and continue to punish it. Even if we try, that won’t work. When it needs its rest, the body will take it by its own means. So all the talk about it is enough and it is time to take rest is nothing but artificial and impractical words. Unless we follow the teaching of Gita which clearly says that to see work in no work and no work in work, we won’t understand what is work and rest.
He , who sees inaction in action and action in inactions, is wise among men, he is a yogi and a performer of all actions.—4:18
Secular Song 582

Secular Song 582 Not enough
On one side
The heart says ‘it is enough’
On the other side
It longs more
This is not
New to me
No change will
Come in this
Is it only
Normal for me
Or everyone one
Has the same tendency
Longing to know
About it with much eager
I went and
Observed their life
None has stopped
Doing anything
Thinking that
‘it is enough’
As we search
More and more new things
The needs also
Never come down
Even those that
We left thinking ‘it is enough
Only changing the name
And imagining that it is something new
Repeating the
Same thing again
We find some
New content in it
Once we
Took this body
Which one should we
Give up as ‘enough’
When we are
Going to live
With some kinds of needs
Till we depart
Even it is mere
Lip service
To say that
‘It is enough’
From the womb
Till the grace
Needs will
Follow us continuously
Though we
Argue and debate
With much frustration
Till the end it will remain
Therefore whichever
Our heart says
Agreeing with it
Though Buddhi also will go along with it
Till the end of our life
As there are needs
There won’t be end
To this ‘enough’

Secular Song 583
When I read the following thought of Tagore, both agreeing and disagreeing with him I wrote this song [see the previous song 582 for my view on work]
…Our day of work is not our day of joy—for that we require a holiday; for, miserable that we are, we cannot find our holiday in our work. The river finds its holiday in its onward flow, the fire in its outburst of flame, the scent of the flower in its permeation of the atmosphere; but in our everyday work there is no such holiday for us. It is because we do not let ourselves go, because we do not give ourselves joyously and entirely up to it, that our work overpowers us.— Rabindranath Tagore, Sadhana: The Realisation of Life, Macmillan And Co;, London, Indian edition, 1930, p. 133
We cannot ‘let ourselves go’, because even this ‘let go’ is another kind of toil. My conviction is that without doing some work none can live. Even this so-called relaxing and taking rest without doing any work is another kind of, sometimes more challenging work. We should try to keep a balance between workaholics and laziness. Of course, even this remaining laziness is the most difficult active work for me.
Secular Song 583

Secular Song 583 Nobleness of Karma
Life is not there
Without any activity
If we avoid activity
Then there is no life
This human life
Which we took only to toil
There is no concept
Like ‘liseaure’.
Once we realize that
Even taking rest
Is also a
Kind of work
We will find rest
Even in toil
Then we will understand
The true nature of rest
Remaining lazy
Without doing anything
Is not the Rest that we take
In our body
Once laziness has
Come in our heart
Then itself is a
Kind of disease
Whatever we do
Keeping total
Concentration
In doing it
If we do our part
Properly, then
Common good will come
For everyone
When we sit
Not doing
Any kind of
work
Nothing will
Stop and
Our body will also
Continue to remain active
Realizing
This truth
Understanding the
Nobleness of work
If we remove
Laziness from our heart
Blessings will come
In everybody’s life

Secular Song 584
I received the sad news of the demise of a bhakta of the Lord who remained bedridden for the past several months. Along with her immediate family, others bhaktas also stepped in to help the family to get some release from their struggle of taking care of her. When it was decided to shift her to a Care Home and the family members were preparing for that suddenly the news of her demise came to us. One way she ran her race and completed it successfully and found her eternal Rest. When I was thinking about it, then I realized that though her struggle came to an end, it never came to an end to her family or to us. When we think that one struggle came to an end in life ,giving some relief to us, then the next one will stand in the queue to challenge us. And I never consider struggle as a burden but an essential part of life. If we accept and face it, in the end it will cooperate with us to finish that particular struggle—paving the way for the next one to come. We cannot create and use energy without both positive and negative forces in elements and nature. As I was meditating about it, I wrote this song.
Secular Song 584

Secular Song 584 Struggle is a companion
We try to forget
some struggles
Thinking that
They came to an end
If one struggle ends
Then next one will come
Once this being the Truth
How can we deny it
We cannot live
Without any struggle
Our life won’t complete
Without any kind of struggle
Only if two
Opposites remain together
Then alone we will get
Energy to move
If everything goes well
Without any struggle
Then it also would
Becoming highly boring
A banquet would be
Good only
If there is
Varieties of food
If we eat the
Same kind of food each day
Then that also is
The mark of some sickness
For both the body
And mind to work properly
Struggles are
Every essential
Only if the curd
properly churning
Butter will emerge
Experience taught this
Therefore, realizing that
When one struggle ends
The next will stand
In the queue
When we stand firmly
With much preparedness
Even struggle would become a
Companion to accomplish everything

Secular Song 585
The real struggle in life is doing several things keeping only our personal interest and not keeping [minimum] common interest. Unable to take our own decision. Unable to make other decisions, several times we struggle a lot. The best solution to overcome this is to listen to both our heart and others advice and try our best to keep common good for all.
Secular Song 585

Secular Song 585 We never aims
There is no use
In telling, that
I act as my
Heart says
Does our heart
Only listens to us
Does it dance
Only according to our tune
Our mind is
Not within our control
It never submit
To other’s control as well
Nothing wrong
In saying that
It goes as it wishes
To go on its own
Unable to go
As per its instructions
Unable to accept
Others suggestions
Once we act
As we wish
There is no use
In blaming others
Once we listen
To our heart
After analysing
Others suggestions
We should strive
A balance and act
So that not so much
Damage will occur for all
There is no act
Without a mixture
Of both good
And bad
But we never have
The longing to do
Reducing the loss
And increase common good for all
