Secular Songs 101 to 105

Song 101

The regular struggle in life when I fail to live up to my own creed. When I fail to live up to my idealism, I both blame my reason or God and long to have a life of the animal. But who knows about their struggle? [See below for the English translation]

Ranikhet, (Uttaranchal), 26-6-1999, 10.15

101   It will be better

If I remain as an animal

That would be much better

Not having

Unnecessary struggles in life

Why God has given

The reason unnecessarily

Unable to live

Even after analysing with reason?

As I failed to uphold

My own creed by doing

As the heart agrees

With the decision of the mind

When I struggle

By losing my self-determination

In this meaningless life

It would be better

If I remain as an animal

So that I can

Have a meaningful life

On this earth

Ranikhet, (Uttaranchal), 26-6-1999, 10.15

Song 102

As I was planning to shift from Erode to Hosur, there came so many questions about it in my mind. I was not sure whether it was the right decision or not.  As I was very confused, I wrote this song that I should proceed with much courage. Otherwise I can never accomplish anything in life, particularly when I launch to go to unknown areas in life. [see below for English translation]

Erode, January 10, 2000, 5.15 p.m.

Erode, January 10, 2000, 5.15 p.m.

102 Clear paths

We seek

Many solutions

In our life

But we hesitate

To implement them

Due to some uncertainties

If we sought the answers

Without any clear question

Then the answer

Will remain unclear

Not helping us

To proceed further

Before we seek any solution

We should make sure one thing

That along with the grace of God

We should have courage

To press forward in it

Song 103

This evening good rain was about to come.  But suddenly strong winds came and took away the clouds.  That time I wrote this song. Some cool wind before the arrival of the rain gives some joy and hope for the arrival of the rain.  But a sudden dashing wind carries away the clouds then it deprives us of the joy of enjoying the first shower of rain in the summer.  When one observes and immerse in nature, even such regular natural phenomena also inspire us to write poems.

103. Improper alliance

Won’t you come opening the sky?

Won’t you give yourself for the earth to cool?

Won’t you come to comfort and give new life

To the drying crops

The clouds become dark and thunder was there

My heart rejoiced about your arrival

But the wind which came before it

Why refuse to show some mercy to us

When the summer heat is increasing

The wind which never show even little mercy

When come to inform about your arrival

Why chases you away quickly

The alliance formed

Between rain and wind is not good

When they both come separately

There are no words to describe that pleasure

Mathigiri, 16-04-2004. 5.30 p.m.

Song 104

The name ‘Prasad’ means Grace.  As I was thinking about Prasad, my dear shishya, who passed away in the recent accident on the way back from Kodaikanal I wrote this song thinking about his loss for all of us.  I too was in that van and many of us were injured.  But he alone was killed and we all will miss him forever in life.  For me poems should also reflect life’s situation of its various shades.  Paying such a tribute to someone who is very close to our heart or principle is part of Indian, particular Tamil tradition.

104. Prasad

By making us to lament for him

He went away from us by saying good-bye

Even though he had ‘compassion’ in his name

Somehow he forgot that in his action

Though he had immense love

For Priya (his wife) who he married in love

Make her to lament

Why he went away daringly

Where he has gone for his

Children to long for him

He made his mother who brought him on her lap

To float in everlasting sorrow

He made his father to drown in sorrow

Who begot him with much affection?

He made his brother

To struggle on this earth alone

He made all his relatives

To lament always for him

He made his friends to bewildered

Who cherished his friendship?

He also made his guru

Who gave him teaching to lament?

He left us, what else can we do

O God he came to you

He lived as real ‘Prasad’

According to the meaning of his name

In order his progeny

To grow and multiply like a banyan tree

O God show your grace

For your glory forever

Song 105

As I was thinking both about Family life and renunciation, I realized that the spirit of ‘renunciation’ should be part of family life and not merely ‘giving up’ certain things outwardly is not renunciation, I wrote this song.

105. Family and Renunciation

Both renunciation and family life

Are good dharmas

To have a good family life

There should be some renunciation

By giving up

‘Ego among them

Removing the thought that

Everything is ‘ours’

Taking personal care

For everyone in the family

And toiling for that

With a spirit of Renunciation

Always keeping an eye to see that

For everyone received according to their need

Remain united to make progress in life

And if continue to enjoy such a happy life

That family will always progress

Renunciation is

Not merely ‘giving up’ certain things

Courageously forsaking many needs

Giving one’s life only for others

Doing penance for the welfare of the world

Feel content within

Living alone remaining humble

Keeping silence alone is renunciation

Secular Song 106

When I went to Andaman as I was returning back to Port Blair from Mayabandhar, on the way I saw the naked Jaravas who have now begun to contact us by the effort of some people.  When I was returning back to Chennai on the ship as I was thinking about it, I wrote this song.  The only good thing that we can do is to leave them alone to live as they are with nature. In the name of civilizing them we will make their life worse.  Though I wrote this song a few years before, as I was recalling my Andaman visit, I wrote this song again from my memory again now.

106.        True Jnanis

‘Nakedness’ (Nirvana) is not new to them

As they are living ‘nakedly’!

‘Enlightenment’ (Jnana) is not a riddle for them

As they never knew what ignorance (avidya) is

Once the sky itself becomes the roof

Where is the need for a separate house to live (for them)?

Once the air itself becomes their dress

Why are they going to seek another dress to change?

Jeravas the true’ Jannis’ who live

Mingling with nature

Will become ‘ignorant’

Once they began to contact with us

In the name of civilizing them

What we are doing is nothing but ignorance on our part

In no way they will be benefitted

Becoming part of our [mad] civilization

Leave them to live along with the nature

This is the only service that we can do to them

They never demanded our kind of life

Therefore, don’t do this injustice (to them).

Secular Songs 107 to 110

Song 107

Though I am not against divorce in extreme situations, still I am not in favour of it.

Once made a commitment to live together in marriage the couple should do everything to fulfil that commitment.  Most of our elders and ancestors never knew this concept of ‘divorce’. But in the name of modern life the way divorce happens now in India is alarming which shakes the social fabric of our society.  At the same time compared to other countries divorce is very less and many couples, though find it difficult to live together for the sake of children and society continue to live together.  And some people even criticise this kind of culture and worldview, that too comparing it with the west where they can divorce keeping in mind their own personal need and comfort.  See Gravitas Plus: India has the lowest divorce rate in the world.  https://youtu.be /2SDQp85Vn1E.  Well as a single man I have no right to tell what the married couple should do but however it works well and very easily in the West, it won’t be the same in India—at least at present.  In the future this might change.

107   .  What is modernity?

Remaining together for sometime

And get separated for some time

Marrying again

Get separated again

Becomes a habit

For some people

In the name of

Modernity

As long as

The meaning of the life is not known

The rules of life are

Not clear

Living like this

With the principle of

Coming and going

Is not modernity

In the path of

Those who lived before us

In the guidance of the

Principles given by Valluvar

With the understanding

As our parents lived

Living together continuously

Is also ‘modernity’.

Song 108

The famous slogan in Tamilnadu by the politicians here is that only North makes progress whereas South gets diminished. As Sri Anna Hazzare was fasting in the North opposing corruption and in Tamilnadu another famous politician indulge in corruption, I wrote this song.

29-08-2011.

108.    Two elders

 One old man in north

Keeps fasting

Thinking about the corruption

In the South another old man

Boiling within

Doing corruption deliberately

This is what they say that

‘North is progressing

And Sought is diminishing’?

Song 109

When I read some modern Tamil poems known as ‘vasana kavidai’ {Sonata? In English), in which a long sentence will be cut in small form and arranged in a few lines as a poem.  As I read one such poem, I wrote this.  The so-called compromise between the two is the essence of life as each should listen to the other.

2011

109.  Compromise

I should listen

What you say

You should listen

What I say

This is not a

Compromise between us

But this is the

Essence of life

Secular song 110

No rest or relaxation till the end of the life as long as I live with an unstable mind. The only way to overcome it is to live again, not accepting the defeat from it.

110Prove by living

Struggling everyday

With this unstable mind

When I reach the shore

In this unstable life

 Though I managed to Relax

And try to escape from the mind

Again the mind stumbles

Because of frustration.

What I am going to do

Why this constant struggle (with mind)

What is the means to overcome it?

When I am going to find the answer for this

Struggles will never come to an end

And there is no use in merely struggling

Therefore not lamenting unnecessarily

I get up again to prove by living
