Secular Songs 21 to 25

Song 21

Another, a song based on my struggle with my own mind.  Neither can I live with it nor can I ignore it.  Therefore, I try to work out a solution for this struggle which I work out at the end: either to overcome or to surrender.

21 Oh my mind

Oh my mind what is your condition

You live like the cat on the wall

Though you know good and bad

Which one do you seek?  I cannot understand

‘I become tired by struggling with you

Do whatever you want; what can I do’?

Though I tried escape from you by telling this

You rebel against me and refuse to accept even that decision!

The funny thing is that

Though you become an unwanted guest in my life

I invite you and serve you tasty food!

Then I get frustrated by that act (of hosting you).

Without you I cannot live,

Without me you don’t have any other place for you on this earth to abide.

Therefore, we should reach for an agreement

Otherwise, our situation will become worse.

Therefore, let us not have the power struggle between us

Without me you are not there and without you I am also not here!

So, when you do as you wish

Think a bit about my condition also!

If you refuse to listen to me

I have one alternative remedy.

I will try to control you at my best

And if I get defeated in it, then I will become a slave to you

Gonda, U.P. 16-8-1993

Song 22

The following poem I wrote in my response to the article that came in India Today, June 15, 1994, pp. 146-152: Playing Mixed Doubles, which shared about ‘woman swapping’ in cities.  I am against moral policing respecting individual freedom.  But as social animals, we should not allow when individuals or a group cross the Lakshman Reka that will threaten the very fundamentals of any society.

22 Non-humans

The life on this earth is a burden indeed

A difficult life full of sins.

But who is there to save us

Before we perish completely?

Desire, anger, lust, and greed

Are gone beyond their limits.

How much we try

We find it hard to overcome them.

Thinking the temporary pleasure as permanent one

And drowning the heart in lust

What will be the end result of this?

Game of lust which these ‘non-humans’ are playing

Thinking to enjoy another man’s wife

And pushing one’s own wife to commit adultery

What to say the condition of such people

As they change themselves like non-humans without any limitation?

This unethical practice should go

And before they do much damage, we should protect the society

Those who want to uphold dharma

Should join hands to fight against it

Before it goes beyond anybody’s control

Song 23

This is a constant struggle in my life.  I know what my problems are, but I never had the strength to overcome them.

23 Cancer

This is the thamasha in my life!

Though I rebuke others

Openly pointing out their shortcomings,

But as they remain in my life also

As they are forever

As I live

showing indifference to them

They spread like cancer

Began to dominate me

What can I say about such

Wretched conditions in my life!

Song 24

From the morning there was too much struggle in my mind. As I tried to analyse it, I began to laugh at myself. Then I wrote this song.

மஹரி மதியம் 12.30.  காலையிலிருந்து ஒரே மனப்போராட்டமாய் இருந்தது. பல முறை குழப்பம்.  சிலமுறை என் நிலையை எண்ணி எனக்குள்ளே சிரித்தேன்.  அப்பொழுது எழுதிய பாடல்;

Mahari, Rewa, M.P. 8-11-1994

24. No time to struggle

Some say the life is

Full of struggles!

Others say that

It is nothing but a recreation!

Time went in

Deciding which one is it?

Therefore, there is

No more time to struggle.

Mahari, Rewa, (M.P).  8-11-1994.

Song 25

My expectation turned into mere disappointment about starting an ashram in Rewa with the help of some disciples. Then I said that both expectation and disappointment are part of life. Like the two wings for a bird, we too need them both. Otherwise we won’t move further in life.

Mahari, Rewa, M.P. 8-11-1994

25 Which is correct?

Which one is correct

In this life?

Expectation or disappointment?

If you only expect

You will get disappointed

And if you thought that you will get only disappointment

Then you won’t be ready to face it!

Both expectation and disappointment are

Needed in life,

Without them

The life become like a bird without both wings
