Secular Songs 26 to 30

Song 26

I am reading about Emily Dickinson, the famous American poet.  One way her recluse life attracted me.  And today, when I was sitting alone and looking through the window, I wrote this poem.  For me sitting in silence alone is not laziness.  One needs practice for that also.  Merely running pillar to post is not busy.  In order to serve better, we need to develop the art of remaining ‘still’ for some time, which I often practice in my life.

26.  Be Still

When I see the

Outside world through the window

It might look for others that

I am inside a prison!

But if the question is asked

‘Who is actually in prison?’

I will tell with clear understanding that

It is not me but only others!

But people of this world

Thinking my condition

Not knowing their situation

Might say ‘what a pity’!

Though I am confined in a room

My thoughts which never remain confined

Will fly anywhere

And will go as I like!

But to the people

Who is roaming in the outside world?

The life is indeed become

An unbearable burden to them!

Not knowing their condition.

In the name of ‘busyness’

Running pillar to post

They will waste their time.

Remaining ‘still’ is not laziness

Busyness is not toil

If one wants to server better

Should know to remain ‘still!

Mahari, Rewa, 11-11-1994.

Song 27

There are so many stories going around about the life of Emily Dickinson (of America) about her life as a recluse. One among the stories is about her ‘love failure’.  But nobody knows the actual reason for her life as a recluse.  So when I was reading about them, I wondered what others would say about my life after I passed away.  Then to tease them I wrote this song about my life as a recluse.

27. Autobiography

What others might talk

About me after my death!

But they won’t ask me

When I am alive!

‘He renounced the world

As he does not have the courage to live

All are mere outward act

And we don’t find any change in him

What might be the reason

For him to renounce the life and run

Maybe it could be a love failure?’

Like this they will tell so many stories!

I didn’t renounce the life

I am not defeated in any other area in life!

Like you, I too live happily

Enjoying it each day.

Money, affection, wife, and children

All are mere outward appearances!

They won’t come with us when will be gone

Therefore I don’t want them while I am alive.

11-11-1994, Mahari, Rewa, (M.P) 2.50 p.m.

Song 28

This is one of my favorite poems. Still I remember that day in which I thought about so many struggles in people’s lives.  They have everything for their basic needs, but the way they struggle for more which brought so much tension to them and others, made me think ‘What actually life is”.  I went for my walk and on my way back as I was contemplating this point, on my return I wrote this poem.

28.  A babbling

Can we call it a painting which is drawn by a blind person?

Can we call it a house which was built by a child (on sand?)

Can we call it a speech which is uttered by a dumb?

Can this fool’s words be called a poem?

Still unable to control

My inner feelings!

I come forward to write down them

In the name of a poem

A dumb saw a dream

But he couldn’t find words to express it

The condition of my mind is the same

It is a dream seen by a dumb

What is the philosophy of life?

I asked this to so many who are actually living!

“It is nothing but Maya

You fool realize this” they responded,

“If life is a Maya

Then why this struggle in your life”?

But there is no answer to this my question

And they responded “Even this question itself is Maya”

Is there anyone here?

Who knows how to give a proper answer?

This question is a babbling of a dumb

But taking pity on this babbler give me the answer

Mahari, Rewa, M. P. 11-11-.1994, 6.00 p.m.

Song. 29

My shishya Srikant was a bit discouraged as he had to catch up on so much work and must complete his PhD. thesis in stipulated time, he began to lament about his lack of time and knowledge to accomplish many things in life.  As he began to lament about it to me, I advised him, never to accept defeat in life and always accept the challenges as an opportunity to make progress in life. As I was thinking about this again, I wrote this song.

Mahari, Rewa, M. P. November 1994

29.  Don’t lament

Taking deep sigh, don’t lament unnecessarily

Let things remain past and begin a new thing.

Remember that no one has appeared on this earth

Who has never faced defeat in life?

Frustration is mere imagination

And it will defeat you several times.

With much courage, remove it

And raise up again decided to face any challenges.

Mahari, Rewa, M. P. November 1994

Song 30

As one of my shishyas began to blame me when I exposed his hypocrisy which he was hiding from us, one of my other shishyas began to share what that estranged person began to say about me.  Then I explained that no one lives on this earth without shortcomings.  But only a low minded person, not accepting his own shortcomings will begin to spread rumors about others  which we need to ignore.

30. Mean mindedness

Those who does not

Realize their mistakes

Will blame others

In order to hide their mistakes

Through this foolish act.

To the mean minded person

Who lives with the contradiction?

Between words and deeds

They won’t realize their own mistakes

By exaggerating other’s mistake

Will proclaim it to the world every day.

If we realize this

As we do towards our own.
