Song 94

When the actor Sivaji Ganesan in one weekly Tamil magazine (Kumkum) wrote that poet Vairamuthu even overcame Kannadasan, several Kannadasan fans like me became upset and recorded our objection to his remark. In order to register my opposition to Ganesan’s comment I wrote this song.

It is very difficult to translate this song in Tamil as I used the word ‘Varira Muthu’ as a pun.  ‘Vairam’ is diamond and ‘muthu’ is pearl in Tamil.  And separating his name in two parts as ‘Vairam’ and ‘Muthu’, I twisted them to register my response to Sivaji.  Personally I am not against Vairamuthu, however he remained a controversial person in his life as many women in film industry openly blamed him for abusing them, through ‘Me Too’ movement.  No one should compare one poet with another.

குங்குமம் என்ற வாரப் பத்திரிக்கையில் நடிகர் சிவாஜி கணேசன்,‘கண்ணதாசனையும் மிஞ்சி விட்டார் வைரமுத்து’ என்று கூறிய வார்த்தைகளை தொலைகாட்சியில் கேட்டவுடன் என் போன்ற பல கண்ணதாசனின் இரசிகர்கள் வெகுண்டெழுந்தனர்.  எனவே என் எதிர்ப்பையும் பதிவு செய்ய இப்பாடலை நான் எழுதினேன்

It can never become an Eagle

Though thousands of poets might come

Can one become a Kannadasan?

Though Vairamuthualso write poems

If one scrutiny them properly

They all are nothing but artificial diamond nickels

Would millions of poems by others

Ever become equal to one poem of Kannadasan

Who used colour full words

To give expression to his thought

Though his poems

O thankless Sivaji Ganesa

How much you have given some best performances

Though your acting carrier in films

One day the world will forget you

But Kannadasan will rule forever
