Turkey Dance

Turkey Dance

This is not a counter-argument but an alternative perspective. Only when we listen to alternative viewpoints can we understand our own better. So please view this only as an alternative view. Thank you.

This is a true peacock dance:

The wild turkey, seeing the peacock dance,
Imagined itself as just as grand.
So it spread its crooked wings in pride—
A poem learned without being taught inside.
— Old Tamil verse

This is my turkey dance:

A mind long used to seeing shares,
Thought it too must do its share.
So it shared, again and again,
Without the practice that makes us gain.
— Dayanand Bharati, Ashram, July 29, 2025, 5:30 p.m.

The following English translation brings out this idea even more clearly:

The mind that saw much shared each day,
Thought, “I too must go this way!”
So it shared, with zeal and flair—
But learned not much from all that share.

What little skill it claimed to own
Was not through seeds of learning sown—
A practice born from mere pretense,
Not shaped by depth or diligence.

Nicholas Carr, in his book The Shallows, warns that the internet is rewiring our brains for skimming rather than deep thinking. He argues that the flood of online information encourages us to react instantly, without pausing to reflect or absorb meaning—and I couldn’t agree more. Forwarding without thinking is exactly what Carr describes: shallow attention, not deep learning.

Part Three

21
Sharing is easy for anyone;
But understanding what’s shared—hardly done.
— [Tirukkural 664]

22
What is written leaves a mark on the mind;
But shared knowledge may no imprint find.
— [129]

23
Those who share will be admired by sharers;
Non-sharers will be mocked by them.
— [399]

24
A mind declines when it shares without depth;
Even character decays when such sharing is kept.
— [90]

25
Wisdom wanes when sharing is shallow;
Many shares without depth bring only hollow.
— [138]

The mind that saw much shared each day,

Thought, “I too must go this way!”

So it shared, with zeal and flair—

But learned not much from all that share.

What little skill it claimed to own

Was not through seeds of learning sown—

A practice born from mere pretense,

Not shaped by depth or diligence.

ना उपजी सच्चे अभ्यास से;

— [138]
