Tamil is one of the richest and most ancient classical languages in the world. I am happy that I was born a Tamilian and can enjoy this language. Even the United Nations has used a line from a Sangam Tamil song to proclaim its theme to the whole world:
யாதும் ஊரே யாவரும் கேளிர் – கணியன்பூங்குன்றனார்.
Every place is our own and every people are our relatives — Kaniyan Pungundranar.
I heard that after the Muktiveda, Tirukkural by Valluvar has been translated into the most languages around the world. G. U. Pope, the famous Scottish missionary, requested that his grave inscription read: “The student of Tamil.”
However, an interesting issue I found is quoting Pungundranar at the United Nations without understanding the whole context of the song. I don’t think he was promoting or advocating any kind of universal brotherhood. The context of the poem is ‘karma’ or rather ‘fate.’ And the commentator on this song noted it correctly (see the notes for the entire song and commentary). Pungundranar said that since he took several births in different families and different places, he decided that all people are his relatives in one way or another. In one line, he clearly says that as the boat is carried by the current in a river, similarly, we take birth in different families and different places according to our fate.
Given the context, I don’t know why they displayed that one line: “All people are our relatives and every place is our own” as if promoting a universal brotherhood.
I often hear speakers glorify the broadmindedness of Tamilians, claiming they treat the whole world as their own and every other human being as a relative. However, history, both past and present, does not support this view. Like any other ethnic group, Tamilians have contentions with other groups. The present opposition to celebrating Sanskrit week in educational institutes and their permanent opposition to Hindi demonstrate the narrowness of their approach. Of course, these actions are driven by political interest, and common people are not bothered by it.
One Tamilian, to my knowledge, who promoted unity among Indians and identified with the struggle and suffering of people in other parts of the world, is Subrahmanya Bharati. In his song “Sindhu nathi nilavinila,” he expresses his vision of integrating all of India by exchanging talents and resources. Tamil fundamentalists may object to my view, but the context of this song is not on their side.

Notes:
Evil and good are not given by others
Pain’s coming and removal are the result of fate.
Death is not new to those born into this world.
It begins when the embryo forms in the mother’s womb.
This being the truth, we are not happy, thinking life is sweet.
Similarly, when we are upset, we never hate life.
Like a boat that goes along the water when
Rain pours down with lightning and cools the clouds,
And flows on the rocky river, making a great uproar,
Life is carried by fate, and we know it from the texts.
Therefore, we never applaud the noble one,
And we never show any disrespect to the ignoble one.
Thus, every place is our own, and everyone is our relative.

Comment: This song emphasizes that everything happens according to fate.
