Universalized Superstition: A One-Hour Miracle

Once upon a time, superstitions were local.
Some feared black cats, others trusted horoscopes, and a few avoided cutting nails on particular days.

Humanity has now evolved.

We have invented a Universalized Superstition called the Calendar New Year.

On December 31st at 11:59 p.m., the entire planet holds its breath. At 12:00 midnight, nothing changes—except our expectations, which instantly become unrealistic.

This superstition has one undeniable merit: it provides instant psychological relief. For exactly one hour. From 11:00 p.m. to 12:00 midnight, accumulated stress politely waits outside while we count backwards like astronauts preparing for liftoff.

Then comes the sacred ritual of Resolutions.

They are drafted with great sincerity, usually during holidays meant for “reflection.” The list is long, ambitious, and morally impressive. Modern versions are now professionally curated by AI—after it studies your personality, horoscope, medical reports, bank balance, EMIs, unpaid loans, and forgotten borrowings.

By January 3rd, the resolutions quietly resign.

Life resumes from the exact point it was paused—same habits, same hopes, same excuses—only now with a mild sense of failure added for seasoning.

I do not oppose New Year celebrations. Fireworks are beautiful, cakes are delicious, and optimism is harmless when consumed in moderation.

I only doubt the calendar’s spiritual power.

Time does not move forward.
We do.

The calendar merely changes the label—
and watches us go around in the same old circle,
once every year, with renewed enthusiasm.

Voice of the Mind Song 57 – Merely a Swing

One year has gone,
Another arrives with a nameplate new—
Yet nowhere I find
Even a trace of novelty.

Coming and going
Is life’s simple truth.
What lies in between
Is only rehearsal.

The roles that we play
Last but a few brief hours,
Yet rehearsals stretch
Across endless days.

However often we rehearse,
When the play is done,
Everything vanishes—
The role, the mask, the pose.

What we act
And how we act
Is mere entertainment.

In real life,

The stage is not ours,
The audience never stays.

The role we cling to
Dissolves like a dream.

Between dream and memory,
Through all of time,
Life itself swings—
Like a pendulum, endlessly.

Voice of the Mind 78 New Year

The people of the world
Roared with delight:
“The New Year is born!”
They shouted in celebration.

Confused, I asked,
“What exactly is new?”
They replied confidently:
“New thoughts, new feelings, new vision.”

A few days passed
After the New Year’s birth.
With curiosity,

I observed their lives.

Ah! What shall I say?
How pitiable the sight.

All that was ‘new’
Vanished within days.

As usual,
The wheel of life turned again—
They resumed
From the very point they had left.
