Philosophy for our modern scripture—social media.

Today every message drifts into a kind of digital mahasamadhi—a black hole of unread existence. Naturally, we have evolved an emoji-theology to interpret this mysterious afterlife.
A 🙏🏽 is the most versatile deity in the digital pantheon. It may mean: “Thank you.” “I acknowledge your existence.” “Please forgive me for not reading what you wrote.” Or simply, “I have no idea how to reply, so I bow out gracefully.”
A 😂 is not necessarily laughter. It merely certifies that the sender wishes to end the conversation without appearing humourless. Whether anyone actually laughed remains metaphysically unknowable.
A 😕 is modern Vedantic doubt: “I neither agree nor disagree. I have temporarily transcended the burden of having an opinion.”
A 👍 means: “Your message has been officially processed. No further communication is required.”
A ❤️ often means nothing more romantic than: “I lack the energy to type ‘nice.’”
A 😡 is final scripture. No commentary is required. It declares: “This conversation has accumulated excessive karma. Further replies will only prolong the cycle of rebirth.”
🟢 A green tick means: I acknowledge you are still alive, but you are not relevant in my life.
No tick means: You are no longer relevant in life.
The irony is that none of these sacred symbols tells us whether a message was actually understood. They merely record that electrons travelled successfully.
Whether the world is collapsing under pressure, Indian philosophy is debating non-duality, or we are interpreting emojis like medieval theologians decoding scripture, the mystery remains the same: meaning is never stable. It depends less on what was sent than on what the recipient imagines was intended.
The greatest irony comes when someone actually writes a complete sentence instead of dispatching a single emoji. This reveals one of two possibilities: either the person genuinely cares—or, far more likely, has absolutely nothing else to do. Such people remain novices in the ancient discipline of digital minimalism. With sufficient practice, they too may one day renounce language and attain liberation through a solitary 🙏🏽.
I, unfortunately, still commit the primitive act of writing words, hoping to preserve something human in a medium that increasingly communicates through symbols interpreted by algorithms.
In the end, one artificial intelligence writes the message, another artificial intelligence explains the emoji, and two humans congratulate themselves on having had a meaningful conversation.
Perhaps that is the highest realization of the Digital Vedanta.
